Uncovering Weakness

1948 Words
The dark rays of the titan sphere in the sky slowly disappeared in the complete gloom of night. Xie Feng’s black emotionless eyes watched it from the window through the office floor. Since the crimson rainstorm had descended the past yellow sunshine had been disappeared or replaced within the now newly dark light falling on this land like a death curtain. The situation on the streets was heart chilling as before. Zombies were moving everywhere liked robots on one command with their ravenous appetite which demands flesh all the time. Their smell of rotting flesh disgusts him. ‘Having super senses didn’t always give advantage huh’ He reckoned while giving a shut to the wooden window. He turned to return at his temporary abode- a mattress of curtain under one of the computer tables. A fire axe hung loosely in his handed, a grim reminder of death. This was his new weapon of defense to gave him some sense of security. At noon after talking to Guo Tong he had understood one thing clearly. If he wants to survive he had to make his own move and couldn’t rely on other survivors. Their sense of danger was very high which confined them into the same place. Most of them had never seen such bloodshed and suffer the loss of their loved ones. A face with mischievous eyes formed in his mind. His grip tightens on the ax handle. ‘Stay alive foolish brother. I would come to protect you.’ Saying in his mind Xie Feng closed his eyes. Most people had already lost their hope to stay alive. They were powerless but he was different. At some point, Xie Feng fell asleep thinking about his family. When he woke up, he saw there was a red hue on the curtains on the window. The time on the digital clock on the table by his side shows 7:39 a. M. grr His stomach was roaring, a pang of hunger sobered him up completely. “So hungry!” Xie Feng smacked his tongue against his lips. The little food Guo Tong provided him was not enough for his huge appetite. He went to the desk at the corner of the room. He pulled the drawer to take out a packet of instant noodles and an electric cattle. This would be his breakfast for now. He found these things inside the office kitchen on the fifth floor. Thanks for the weekend holiday at the time of red rain there were very few workers present in the whole building. Due to which many things were stayed undamaged. Brother Ji told him that they had already searched the floors for resources but it seems like they had missed some places. Thanks to his sharp eyesight he had seen these packets on the topmost shelves. Xie Feng was not in a hurry to cook the noodles. He returned to the same window as last night and looked for today’s situation. ‘What’s going on. ’ He frowned. The situation particularly was the same as yesterday, there was smoke coming out of all directions and an acidic smell of blood mixed with air. But what made him worry was last evening there were not many zombies roaming in front of the building but now the numbers were almost double. Xie Feng did not know what to make out of this situation. He boiled water in an electric kettle. There was still some electricity present in sockets as the cable tower was still safely standing at the end of the street. He also took out a half-eaten packet of chocolate from his pant pocket which he got from Huo Jiang last day. After having his breakfast he casually picked up some random diary from a table. He found reading a good way to distract his thoughts from the grim outside. Suddenly he picked up his axe by his side and calmly looked at the office door. After few seconds a knock came with the tense voice of Dong Lin. “Xie Feng, are you awake?” “I am” “Guo Tong had called for everyone. There would be a meeting in 15 minutes. ” “Understood” Xie Feng replied. He could guess what could be the topic of the meeting. … When Xie Feng saw Guo Tong he was sitting on a chair with a water bottle in his hand. His face was extremely solemn. The people present had surrounded him with clear tension on their faces. Xie Feng silently stands resting his back on the side concrete pillar. After a minute brother Ji came with a binocular hanging on his neck. Seeing him everyone becomes tenser. “Everyone here. I would keep it straight,” Guo Tong was the first to spoke, “This morning we had counted 80+ zombies just in front of this building. ” Hearing this all present shuddered. “We really don’t know what we were supposed to do,” Brother Ji said weakly, “I had tried to saw to the end of the street, from which I could tell they were moving in our direction. ” “If we could found out their weakness. It could help us to cope with them ” Hao Jiang said heavy-heartedly. “And how were we supposed to did that?” A man in his 40s asked. “Their behavior,” At this moment Xie Feng spoke gathering all their attention, “They all moved together. There must some kind of trigger which they were sensing or following. We just had to understand their triggers and made them followed them in opposite direction from us. ” Seeing all was listening to him, he continued. “If we were able to do that not only we would have a chance to escape. We could use the tactics to trap them to ultimately kill them. ” “it’s not that simple.” Guo Tong said standing from his chair. “We would never know what was possible or not if we even hesitate to give it a try. ” Xie Feng saw Guo tong was still hesitating. “We should wait for few more days. The government will definitely come to help” A man standing behind Guo Tong said. Many people seem to agree with his statement. Xie Feng understands their way of thinking. They were all in high positions and have deep connections with the government but those were things in the past. Now nothing of those things matter. “It’s better to take action when required rather than waiting for some miracle to happened or just stayed still waiting for death. ” Xie Feng shook his head and said. The expressions on Guo Tong’s faced hardened. “We shouldn’t just wait to take action at a critical moment. ” Brother ji said, “I agree to Xie Feng’s proposal.” “What did we have to do?” Guo Tong finally asked. “Let’s talk about our understanding of them. How did you saw them and what did you think why they coming after you?” Xie Feng asked them to tell about their experiences when facing zombies. He already had his own knowledge of how to face them but knowing things from different perspectives has always been more helpful in general. The discussion kept going till noon. Soon it’s lunchtime and distributors gave each person some bread and frozen sandwiches to ate. Today’s talk had been concluded and all agreed on some points which could be used against zombies. We could call them their weakness. First, their speed was not that fast. Due to the rotting of their flesh, muscles had been weakening and they couldn’t run. Second, they all have a poor sense of vision. They literally can’t saw clearly and depend on their sense of smell to found out prey location. Third, the head was their main weak point. If anyone had to face them at the front, the first strike should always be on their skull. Only these three things had been confirmed which could be trusted. Now the things which we must be careful about. We can’t let them came near to our bodies. Mainly can’t let them touched our skin, there must not be direct contact with them. It was highly possible that their infection could be transmitted by bites and scratches. If possible it was better to run as far as possible or hide somewhere close location to be safe. But judging from the situation, not every place could be used as a shelter. After eating lunch, the discussion continued. This time everyone conveys their plan to cope with critical situations. “We could use the cars parked here to crush them at the front and keep the distance from them. ” Xie Feng suggested what could be done during the complete breakout in the parking lot. Same as before discussion continued till evening. The next day also had been spent on finding ways to defended themselves from their attack. Fourth-day early morning there were heavy knocks on Xie Feng’s door. He hurriedly got up and went to saw what had happened. it was Hao Jiang this time. Judging from his faced something bad must have to go on. “Not good, there were hundreds of them who came. ” “Don’t panic tell me what the situation was. ” Xie Feng tried to calm him down. “Come, hurry big brother Guo will tell you everything. ” with saying that he ran away backstairs. Xie Feng grabs his axe. He returned to the window and slide the curtain to saw outside. ‘it’s bad.” The area outside had been packed with zombies. The restaurant he was in before was filled with them and many were keep pushing the parking lot opening the door. Some of them looked at the sky and were roaring madly. The dark rays shine on their blue skin giving the presence of terror. He closed back the window and came downstairs. The first thing he hears and saw was some people were crying and some pushing cars towards the opening area to blocked the doorway. “We had been trapped,” Dong lin called out, “There was no way we could get out from here alive.” “Brother Ji had gone to the upper floors to saw if we could shift there.” A survivor said to people coming from the canteen carrying filled bags. “This will not do anything. It made things worse when food and water will run out. ” Xie Feng said disapprovingly to their choice of action. “What did you thought we should do now?” Guo Tong looked at the upcoming Xie Feng. He had some hope if he could be helpful. Last time they were in the same situation and he was the one who helped us at that time. “We had to move from here. This place will not safe anymore. ” Xie Feng said hurriedly to them. “Where- Where should we go? where could we go?” Dong Lin’s spirit was not that strong. It was easy for him to broke down. “They had blocked the area with their sheer numbers. There must be at least a hundred out there. ” Guo Tong said looking at people pushing objects to the door. Some of the women already sobbing on their knees. Suddenly the hope-filled compound from last day had turned upside down. Xie Feng saw the plan they had formed was gone to drain. Their mental state was no good for carrying tasks to survive. He had to think something fast.
