Chapter ten - Worrying

2731 Words
Luke's POV: It has been a month since I moved to my grandparent's house. My parents called once, and they ended up arguing with my grandparents. Since then, I haven't heard from them. That is better. It's visible how much they care about me. They don't even send me money. It's not like I was going to take them. Once I finish school, I will start working. That way, I can help my granny with groceries and other things. My grandpa doesn't use his money. Well, it's good to have some savings. I do too. Mostly they are from birthdays, Christmas and other celebrations. You can guess who was sponsoring me. Apart from the joke, I want to help my grandparents. After all, they let me live here and take care of me. I mean, all the time. That's why I want to return the favor. Also, I don't plan to go back home. Here Abby is welcome at any time. I plan to spend a lot of time with her. In her house, that will be impossible. My only hope is she won't start arguing with her dad again. Honestly, I don't think they have ever stopped. I would love to help her with that, but it's better if I don't mess up. Otherwise, things might get worse. I have to focus only on her. That way is better. I already have enough problems. I don't want more. I'm graduating after three months. I should decide what I will do next. I know I will work. The question is where. I don't know if there is anything I'm good at. Maybe I can be a waiter. It can't be that hard. Well, I will be good if I don't drop a plate. After all, I don't want to get fired on my first day. I need to work on my balance and speed. I will ask Abby to help me with that. She can be my customer. It's better if I try with plastic cups and plates. I don't want to buy my granny a new set of glass cups. I hope that when the time comes, I will find a job. I want to take care of myself, not rely on my grandparents. They are doing enough things for me. Another weekend came. I invited Abby here to spend the day with me. The thing is that I have nothing else to do. I didn't plan anything. I know some people from school, but I don't want to hang out with any of them. Let's say that we don't have the same vibe. For now, my girlfriend is the only one with who we are on the same page. She understands me and doesn't put pressure on me. I feel good sitting and talking with her. I woke up and went to get dressed. Abby will be here soon. I might have invited her for breakfast. I don't think my granny will care. She loves her. I don't know what happened between them. She is treating Abby like her granddaughter. It's not like I mind. I'm glad they are so close. Finally, someone likes her. I mean, someone different than my brother. Maybe I can call him today. We haven't talked since I moved here. Many things happened, and I didn't have much time for him. Also, he is always busy. I don't know how he takes care of the baby. When I was ready, I walked downstairs, but there was no sign of granny. I walked into her room and saw her lying down on the bed. - Granny. Good morning. There was no answer. She probably didn't hear me. Let's hope that it's only that. I don't want to think about the worst thing possible. Please tell me that is not the case. - Granny. Hey. Can you hear me? Please. Say something. Granny? It's me. Luke. - I said and started shaking her - What happened? - You scared me. - Why? - I thought. - You thought what? That I was dead? - Yeah. You didn't answer me. - My boy, I was taking a mini nap. Come here. Hey. I will never leave you. Please don't get upset. - she said and hugged me - I'm sorry. Next time I will talk louder. - That is a good idea. - my granny said, chuckling - I hope you won't mind, but I invited Abby for breakfast. - Really? Let's cook then. What do you want to eat? Tell me, and I'll make it for you. - I won't deny pancakes with maple syrup. - You have it. Let's go into the kitchen. - Where is my grandpa? - He is outside. Soon he should come home. Granny and I started making the pancakes. Soon there was a knock on the door, and I went to open it. Abby was staying in front of it with a small bag. I took it from her and let her in. - Something smells good. - Hello. Please give me a big hug. - my granny said and hugged her tightly - Granny, Abby is suffocating. - Oh, I'm sorry. Gosh, you are so pretty. - Thanks. - Let's go into the kitchen. The food is almost ready. - I bought cinnamon rolls. You can take one if you want. - Thank you, dear. I love them so much. - So I did well. - Even perfect. After half an hour, my grandpa came too. All of us sat down and ate the pancakes. Well, my granny took a couple of cinnamon rolls. Who knew she loved them so much? Both my grandpa and I looked at her and started laughing. Granny looked at us and continued eating. I took my laptop and decided to call Sam. Let's hope he has some time for me. My grandparents would love to see him. - Hello, big brother. - Hello to you too. Little brother. - How are you, Sarah, and the baby? - We are fine. Where are you? This doesn't like our house. - Oh, I moved to live with my grandparents. They are right here. - I said and turned the laptop so he could see them - Oh my god, Sam. I haven't seen you in so long. You are a man already. - my granny said, tearing up - How are you, granny? - I am fine. Luke is keeping me company. - Did he move out to live with you and grandpa? - Yes, and I don't blame him. Your mother doesn't know how to treat her kids. - I will say that they have differences. - Boy, is that your baby there? - grandpa asked - Yes, it is. Sarah, come here. - Hello. - The baby looks just like you. It's like I was watching you when you were little. - Thanks, but she looks more like Sarah. - I have to say that both your brother and you have a taste in girls. - For sure, we do. - By the way, Abby is here. - I said and turned my laptop again - Hi. Finally, I can see you. - Hi, Sam. I have heard many things about you. - I wonder what my brother told you. - Sam said, chuckling - That you always keep his back. - That is the first good thing I hear about myself from him. - Very funny. - Ok, Sarah and I have to go out for a while. Can you turn the camera to my granny for a minute? - Sure. Here you go. - We plan to come home soon. If you want, we can visit you. - I would love to. That will be like a dream. - You can always go to my mom's house. We plan to stay there. - Thanks, but it's better if I don't go. I don't want to argue with her. - Ok, then. We'll come to see you. Bye, granny. Grandpa, take care of her. - I'm listening. - I have to go now, but I'll call you later or another day. Bye, everyone. - Bye, Sam. - I said, and he ended the call After breakfast, my granny went to lie down again. I think she is not feeling well. I left Abby with my grandpa and went to check on her. She was drinking a pill. I sat on the bed and looked at her. - Hey. Do you need something? - How are you? - I'm fine, why? - Are you sure? - Dear, don't worry about me. I'm fine. - What is this pill about? - It's for my heart. Don't worry. It's nothing serious. - If you say so. - Why are you upset again? Abby is here. Why don't you two go out and have fun? - Thanks, but I think I want to stay with you. - What will you do with me? Go out and have fun. - I don't want to leave you alone. - Hey, your grandpa is here. Nothing will happen. I promise you. - my granny said and hugged me Abby and I walked out. I didn't want to do it, but my granny convinced me. I know she can take care of herself. The thing is that I feel like something will happen to her. I can't let this happen. I don't know what I will do if I lose her. She and my grandpa are the only people I have here. Sam is far away, and my parents don't like me. Well, Abby is here too, but she can't do much. The girl has other problems. - Luke, are you ok? - Hmm? - I asked if you were ok. Today you are not in the mood. Did I do something? - No, it's not because of you. - You can share with me if there is a problem. - I'm worried about granny. She is taking some pills. - I understand, but she is old. My grandparents were taking pills as well. That is something normal for people her age. - But I don't want to lose her. - Since she is taking pills, it means they will help her. Your granny will be fine. I'm sure about this. - I hope so. They are the only people I have here. Well, except for you. - It's ok. I'm not jealous. - Abby said, chuckling - Where do you want us to go? I want to take you for lunch. - We can walk around the town and letter walk to a diner. Is it ok for you? - Yes, it's perfect. Abby and I walked around for two hours. I will try to think more positively. There is nothing wrong with granny. She is fine. One day I might believe this. The thing is that I want her to live long. I know no one is immortal, but I want to spend more time with her. The same is for my grandpa. They took a lot of care of me when I was little. Now they did the same. I want to return the favor. Maybe Abby can help me with that. I can send them away for a few hours while Abby and I make dinner. I can't cook. Well, I will do everything I can to make something eatable. We walked into the diner and ordered food. I wanted French fries and meatballs. Abby got a toast. After twenty minutes, our food was here. I have to say that it's delicious. - I want you to help me with something. - What is it? - I was thinking about making a nice dinner for my grandparents. The problem is that I can't cook. Can you help me with this? - Sure, but I can't cook either. - We'll figure it out together, ok? - No problem. What about your grandparents? Where will they go? - I will send them somewhere. - Ok, then. All you have to do is tell me when you will make this, and I'll come to help. - Thank you, Abby. You are the best. - Thanks for the compliment. - For you always. Abby and I stayed in the diner for a while. We were searching for recipes online. I don't know what to cook. One of the things I will make is cinnamon rolls. I have no idea how this will turn out, but I know my granny loves them. That can be the dessert. I haven't decided what the main meal should be. We'll think about this. Maybe I can ask my grandparents what their favorite meal is. Granny might get suspicious, but I won't tell her anything. Both Abby and I walked home. Grandpa was doing something on the table. I think he is trying to fix something. It's better if I help him. Otherwise, he won't finish it until tomorrow. Abby and I sat at the table, and he looked at us. - Hey, kids. How was the walk? - It was good. What are you doing? - I want to repair this music box. - From where do you have that? It looks old. - I bought it for your grandmother's fiftieth birthday. Once I was cleaning the house and pushed it down without seeing. The box is fine, but there is no music anymore. - Do you need help? - I don't even know what I am doing. - Let me see. So, you have to put this here and that there. Now we have to make this as tight as possible, and here you go. You have a new music box. - How did you fix it so fast? - Easy. - You are a genius, boy. - I'm far away from that. You should say this to my mom. Grandpa was talking with us when my granny came. She was walking until she heard something and stopped. What is going on with her? It's like she has remembered something. - This music. - Come here. Luke helped me fix it. - grandpa said - That is from my fiftieth birthday. - Happy late birthday. - he said, chuckling - Thank you so much. It looks brand new. - Granny, the box was fine. Only the music part was gone. - Thank you, dear. You don't know how much this means to me. - You're welcome. - Back in the day, these things were expensive. Not many people could afford that. - You did it. - That is my favorite present. - Now you can use it once again. - I will put it on my nightstand. - We should celebrate this. Granny, let's cook something. - Abby said - I haven't made cookies with chocolate chips in a while. - What are we waiting for right now? Let's go. - You need to come more often. My grandson will like it. - Not only him. I feel good here. - You need to tell me your favorite meal. I will cook it for you. - I don't have a favorite. I eat everything. - There must be something you like more than the other food. - No, I don't. I like everything. - Ok, let's cook with you. These two can talk. - my granny said, looking at my grandpa and me - Are you leaving us? - I asked, dramatically - You will be fine. - Abby said and kissed my cheek - That is not the end. - It is for now. - my girlfriend said and left I convinced Abby to spend the whole day here. I know her dad might get mad, but I don't care. I like spending time with his daughter. Also, she said she was feeling good here. The other thing is that my grandparents enjoy it. I'm glad that my granny is happy. I don't know what I would do without her. She is perfect and treats me like a king. The same is for my grandpa. They love me a lot. Unlike my parents, they are on my side. That's why I love them so much. I think Abby needs to come here more often. I hope that my grandparents will live for a long time. I'm not ready to let them go.
