Abby's POV:
Granny is still in the hospital. She was feeling better the first two days. Later, things got worse. I don't know what happened. I think she is not sick. There is something else. Any sickness affects older people differently than younger, but she should've beaten it up to now. Maybe there is something more serious. I want to talk with the doctor about that, but I don't want it to look like I know more than him. That is not true. I'm sure he has thought about it, but he wanted to see how the current treatment would work for her. Hopefully, she will be fine. Otherwise, Luke won't take it. Let's not talk about his grandpa. I should help her. Sadly, in this case, there is nothing I can do. More than anything, I want to help her, but I can't. She was looking after me as if I was her grandkid. Now I want to return the favor. The problem is that I can't. I don't know what I can do about her. All I can do is take care of Luke and his grandpa. I'm sure she would want that. Also, I think it's time for my boyfriend to talk with his parents. I know they don't have good relations right now. Well, we are talking about his granny. I don't know what type of relationship is between grandparents and parents, but we talk about support. You realize how much you miss someone after you lose him. I don't want the same thing to happen here. They need to talk and fix everything. Luke won't go home, but at least he can make up with his parents. It won't be easy, but he can try. I will be with him in case something happens. Let's not forget that his parents still don't know me. I don't want to see them, but one day it will happen. All I can do is accept this and move on. They can't tell me what to do. Neither to their son. I believe we'll have a great future together. I hope I'm right because I don't want to let him go. I'm not ready for that.
It's another school day. Honestly, I don't even want to go anymore. Less than two months left until I graduate. That is the last thing on my mind. The only thing I can think of is Luke and his granny. He feels terrible, and I don't know how to help him. I wish I could do something. Watching him like that is breaking my heart. He is worried, but we both know only doctors can help her. His grandpa is with her every day. We tried to send him home to rest, but he refused to listen.
I woke up and went to get ready for the day. I'm not in the mood for that, but I should do it. Luke didn't tell me if he would come or not. He will probably stay with his granny. When I was ready, I walked downstairs for breakfast. Mom and dad were already at the table. I left my backpack on the empty chair and sat down. I don't want to eat now, but I don't know if I'll make it until lunchtime. It's better if I put something in my stomach.
- Honey, are you ok? Why are you not eating? - mom asked
- I'm not hungry.
- Did something happen? You look worried.
- It's nothing you should worry about.
- How am I not supposed to when you look like that?
- Mom, I'm fine. Please leave me alone. I don't want to talk about this.
- It's visible that he has messed up. - dad said
- Seriously? You don't even know anything, but you still criticize him.
- Why else would you look like that? Your life was better before he appeared.
- Please, don't argue with her. - mom said
- You better listen to my mom.
- If it's not because of him, why is that mood? You don't want to tell us.
- Because even if I tell you, this won't change anything. You don't care about me anymore.
- That's not true.
- Yes, it is. Otherwise, you would've supported me instead of arguing about the same things. Over and over again. Dad, I'm tired of fighting with you every day. - I said with tears in my eyes
Dad was about to say something, but my phone turned on. I had a message from Luke. He says that his granny wants to see me this afternoon. I was planning to visit her anyways. That only made it easier for me. I replied that I would be there.
- You have plans, don't you?
- Dad, please.
- He won't treat you right.
- HIS GRANDMOTHER MIGHT DIE, AND ALL YOU CAN THINK ABOUT IS MY LIFE. WHY ARE YOU SO SELFISH?
- What? Really? - mom asked
- Yes. She has been sick for the past two weeks. First, she was at home, but the medicines from the doctor didn't affect her. That's why he took her to the hospital. In the beginning, she was getting better. Later, she got worse again. I think there is something more than just sickness.
- I'm sure she will be fine.
- I hope so. I will go to school now.
- But you didn't eat anything.
- Thanks, but I'm not in the mood for that. - I said and left
I walked to school and took my books for the first class. Luke said he won't come today. I'll tell the teacher why he is not here. Soon, Jenny came up to me with Ariel. I'm not in the mood to talk with anyone.
- Hey, how are you?
- Not now, Jenny.
- Why?
- You look in a bad mood. Did something happen? - Ariel asked
- I don't want to talk about this. - I said and left
On the lunch break, I went to eat something. My stomach was giving me signals. It's better if I eat. After school, I will visit his granny. I was trying to find a table when someone called me to sit with them. I ignored it and sat down at the last table. Luckily, it's small, and no one will bother me. Remind me not to speak so fast.
- Hey, Abby.
- Hey, Dean. What are you doing here? I mean, you never talk with me.
- I know, but I noticed you weren't in the mood. Can I know what happened? Maybe problems in paradise. - he said, chuckling
- First, that is personal. Second, I won't share it with you.
- I understand. Can I at least have my lunch with you?
- I don't care.
- Thanks.
After my last class, I took my things and walked straight to the hospital. The doctor was checking on his granny. I walked in, and she smiled at me. I wonder how long I will be able to see this.
- Hey, granny. How are you?
- I'm fine. Thanks for coming.
- Of course. I heard you wanted to talk with me.
- Yes, I do.
- Ok, you look fine for now. The nurse will come to put you in a system. If you need anything, tell her.
- Thank you so much.
- You're welcome.
The doctor left, and the nurse came. I see that everyone takes care of her. Well, I feel like it's not enough. It's not like I can do something. I have no idea what this system includes. Granny made Luke and his grandpa go outside.
- Come and sit here. - his granny said and tapped the place next to her on the bed
- Is everything ok?
- I want to tell you something.
- Ok, I am listening to you.
- Look, I don't know how many days have left me.
- But granny.
- No, let me finish. I don't know how many days have left me to live. That's why I want to tell you something. You are a strong girl. I hope you can take care of my grandson. He loves you, and I know you two will be fine. Abby, Luke needs you more than he will admit. This boy is deeply in love with you. I know it looks like teenage love, but it's not. I see it. Please take care of him. No matter what happens, I want you to be by his side. He has no one else. You are the only one who can help him through the years. Both his grandpa and I are old enough. We won't be able to do it. That's why I am telling you all of this. Abby, you are what has been left to him. Sam is too far away. Also, he has a family to take care of right now. Please, don't leave my grandson. That is the only thing I would want from you.
- I promise you. Luke will never be alone. Not when I am next to him. - I said with tears in my eyes
- Thank you, dear. I know you will treat him right.
- Mom. How are you?
I turned to see a woman and a man. These must be Luke's parents. I have never seen them before. Maybe that was better. I was about to walk outside when his granny grabbed my hand and made me stay.
- Please don't go. I want to spend my last days with you.
- Don't talk like that. You will be fine. I promise you.
- Thanks, but we both know how this will end. Will you call Luke, please?
- Of course. I will be back.
I went to call Luke, and both with his grandpa walked inside. Right now, I feel like the odd one. I'm not supposed to be here, but his granny won't like it if I go. I stepped back and sat on the couch. Soon I felt a hand on mine.
- Thank you for coming. Can I know what she told you? In the morning, she said it was almost urgent for her to see you.
- Granny thinks she will die soon.
- I know. She keeps talking about it. That won't happen.
- I hope so.
- So, is this what she told you? You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. I'm just curious.
- She wants me to care for you when your grandparents pass away.
- What? Why? I can take care of myself.
- She didn't mean that. If you want, you can talk with her about it.
- I will do it.
- I see you finally called your parents.
- I had to. I had no other choice. Later, they would've blamed me if she had passed away, and I didn't tell them.
- You don't have an easy life.
- Maybe, but you are helping me with that. - Luke said and kissed my cheek
- At least I am doing something.
- Thank you for being with me. I need you.
- Really? I can't do anything to help you.
- You are doing more than enough for me, and I appreciate it.
- I'm glad that I can help.
- I don't know why we met, but I'm happy.
- Me too.
- Are you still arguing with your dad?
- Sometimes, but I don't pay attention to that. He can talk about whatever he wants.
- I'm sorry about that.
- Why? It's not your fault.
- Technically, it is. If we weren't dating, you wouldn't have this problem.
- I am not replacing you for anything in the world.
- Then you ask me why I love you so much. - he said and kissed me
- I love you too.
I stayed in the hospital for a while. Luke's parents acted as if I was a ghost. Everyone was talking to me except for them. I guess that they didn't like me. It's not like I care. Later, I walked home for dinner. I went to help my mom set the table. Soon my dad came. I didn't look at him and left the plate in his place. When we were ready, my mom and I sat down. I started eating without saying anything. I will always argue with my dad no matter what I say. I don't know what happened between us, but it's not something I like. I wish we could have the relationship we used to. Something broke down. I don't know if I will be able to fix it. At least my mom is staying out of this. I don't want her to feel like she has to choose a side.
- How is Luke's grandmother? - mom asked
- She is still the same. The sad part is that she thinks her end will come soon.
- Well, if she is old enough, it's normal for her to think about it.
- But it's not fair. She didn't do anything to anyone. - I said, tearing up for the hundredth time today
- You are messing with problems that aren't yours. - my dad said
- This woman treated me like I was her grandchild. How can I not care about her?
- You had grandparents. These people mean nothing to you.
- How could you say that?
- Because you waste time with people instead of focusing on yourself.
- If I focus on myself, it means arguing with you. No, thank you. - I said and left
I walked into my room and laid on the bed. I buried my face in the pillow and started crying. Why dad wants me to stay away from these people? They didn't do anything to me. I mean, they accepted me as a part of their family. Soon, I felt a hand rubbing my back. It was my mom. I didn't say anything.
- Hey, everything will be fine. You have to be patient.
- When? Dad hates me. Granny might die, and Luke's parents treated me like I had been a ghost. It's not like I care.
- You saw them?
- He called them to come and check on his granny. She is his mom's mom. - I said, getting up
- I think you accepted her as your grandmother because you don't have one. Am I right?
- I don't know. The woman was good to me. Also, she was happy to see that her grandson had a girlfriend.
- Something will come true if you believe in it for a long time.
- Why are you so sure?
- Because I know it.
- Mom, I don't want to lose her. I know we are not blood-related, but I feel her close to me.
- She will be fine. All you have to do is believe it.
- I do. I believe it, but she doesn't.
- You can't control how long people will live.
- I know, but she deserves a long life.
- Everything will be fine. I promise you. - my mom said and hugged me
Mom and I talked for a while. I don't know how to make my dad understand that these people are not bad. They take care of me as if I am their grandkid. I have no idea why he became so cold. Mom offered to talk with him, but I cut her off. That is not her fight, and I want her out of it. She is already doing enough for me. I don't want her to be part of that. No matter what happens, I will always stay by my boyfriend's side. First, I promised this to his granny. Second, he needs me. I won't leave him alone for a minute. I hope that whatever is going on with his granny, she will beat it.
