I got up early and began my chores for the day. It has been a week now and it has been hectic. I had noticed strange things happening in the pack—like the howling of wolves occasionally, people's ears are highly sensitive and can pick up even the littlest sound, the paintings of wolves, and the weird one was the whispers is get when I pass through.
That day I carried on with my duties like every normal day and tried my best to ignore the whispers when I heard someone calling to me.
“Sarah!”
I turned to see the assistant of Nanny Josephine, Clara calling out to me. I dropped my cleaning materials and walked up to her. She had a clear notion written on her face—I wasn't up to par with her standard.
“You are needed by Josephine.” She said and turned to walk away.
Why would Josephine need me? Is there someone that I did? I shrugged off the worries and began to walk to the office. When I got there I placed a knock at the door and waited for an answer.
“Come in!“
I took a deep breath and pushed the door open. I stepped into the office to see Josephine in her usual sitting position and a girl with blonde hair standing in front of her with her hair down.
“Ma’am!”
She continued what she was doing not giving me any attention. The girl and I both stood there, quiet as we waited for her to be done. My heart raced because I had seen the punishment given to defaulters and I tried not to be one but here I am—- my palms sweaty, my heartbeat racing fast.
Josephine suddenly stopped writing and looked up, her eyes darted from me to the girl and then back to me.
“The pacing of your heart is one of a kind, human.” She said to me. I was too scared to reply plus I did not understand what she said. She quickly pushed two letters to us.
“This is your letter of transfer— you won’t be working in the wing before but you will be working with Clara to keep the residential area clean, understood?“ Her voice filled with command.
“Yes, Nanny Josephine!” The blond girl and I both chorused.
“Pack up and move. You have exactly ten minutes to be there, your rooms and working post have been assigned to you.” She pointed out to the paper. We took it and waited for her to dismiss us.
“You can leave!”
We both almost ran out of there. When the door was closed we let out a sigh of relived at the same time making us burst into a fit of laughter.
“Hey….I’m Sarah!” I introduced myself.
“Oh…I know, the human. I’m Dani” She replied but my face wasn’t pleased by that.
“Sorry to be forward….But why have I been called that like it is a bad thing?” I asked, genuinely curious.
“Called what? Human? Because you are one?” She said with a questioning look.
“But aren’t everyone here humans? I don’t see anyone calling them that?” I said to her.
“Who said we are humans?” Her face held confusion.
“Wait what?”
“You haven’t figured it out yet?” She asked and I shook my head in disapproval.
She chuckled, “No wonder. Let’s go back, Clara will be waiting and if we are one minute late will suffer the consequences.”
“Ohh!“
We moved back to our room packed the little we had and began to move to the residential area. The transition was overwhelming, the decoration was magnificent and I couldn’t stop staring at it.
“Hey….you still haven’t answered my question.” I reminded her
“Oh, yeah…. I'm a werewolf!”
My eyes widened in horror and I paused in my steps. After a while, I let out a wide laugh. Dani looked at me like I had gone mad but I didn't care.
“What a funny joke, Dani!” I said as wiped the tears out my eyes.
“It isn't….I’m a werewolf and so is everyone else and that's why you are being tagged ‘human’” she said with serious, no hint of a smile on her face.
“Prove it!”
She shrugged, “Okay!” she dropped her bag down as she closed her eyes. When she opened it back up her eyes were a different color and it was glowing. She smiled and I could see fangs on her teeth which were not there before. She brought her fingers up and showed me her claws and I froze in horror.
I stumbled backward, my heart racing with fear. "What...what are you?" I stuttered.
Dani's eyes returned to normal, and she looked at me with a mixture of concern and amusement. "I told you, I'm a werewolf. We're a supernatural species that can shift into wolves."
I shook my head, trying to process what I had just seen. "This can't be real. You're just messing with me."
Dani sighed and picked up her bag. "Come on, Sarah. We need to get moving. Clara is waiting for us."
I followed her, still trying to wrap my head around what I had just seen. Werewolves? Supernatural species? It sounded like something out of a fantasy novel.
As we walked, Dani told me more about the werewolf world and the pack dynamics. I listened, still trying to process everything.
We finally arrived at our new quarters, and Clara was waiting for us, looking stern as usual.
"Welcome, girls," she said. "I see you're both getting along. That's good. You'll be working together to keep the residential area clean."
I nodded, still feeling dazed from what I had just learned.
As we began our work, I couldn't help but steal glances at Dani. She was a werewolf. A supernatural creature.
And I was just a human, stuck in a world I didn't understand.
But as I looked at Dani, I saw something there that gave me hope. Maybe, just maybe, I could find a way to survive in this strange new world.
And maybe, just maybe, I could even find a way to thrive.
But as I turned to continue my work, I caught a glimpse of something that made my blood run cold.
A figure, watching us from the shadows.
A figure with eyes that glowed like embers in the dark.
