Strangers..

1172 Words
Its been almost a month that Anthony had seen Sarah face to face. Each day Sarah would wake up early. She would prepare breakfast and leave before Anthony wakes up. And similarly she came before Anthony reached home, prepared dinner and slept off, avoiding any contact with Anthony.  Not only the meals, like before, she maintained the cleanliness of the house, washed and ironed his clothes and kept them organised. The both husband and wife were living under the same roof as strangers. Every day Sarah dropped off Anthony's house keys near his laptop bag as a reminder to carry it along. Her silent treatment was driving Anthony insane. For the first few days, Anthony too choose to ignore her. "Let me see for how long she is going to ignore me. Soon she will come running and pleading for me" he thought. But as days turned into weeks and weeks into a month, he slowly began to feel her absence. His day started without her smile and ended on a lonely bed. Initially Sarah at least kept the door of her newly occupied bedroom slightly open. Anthony would silently peep in to look at her sleeping figure. But after a week of her silent treatment , she completely locked herself in, snatching away the chance from Anthony to have the slightest glimpse of her. In order to have a confrontation with her, once Anthony purposely left his keys back at home. He thought  "Now she cant escape me. She will have to open the door for me and confront me. Does she really thinks that she can ignore me forever?" So patting his back for coming up with the cunning idea Anthony drove back home excitedly "How will you escape today Sarah?" he smirked. As he parked his car on the garage and almost ran through the garden in excitement, all his hopes were drowned when he found the door already unlocked. He realized that Sarah might have found out his keys left behind and with the sound of his car driving in, she got her cue to leave the door open.  Out of frustration he marched towards Sarah's room. He was about to bang the door but stopped "Wait , I can't act so desperate. It's she who has started this God damned game so she has to take the first move towards me. Why am I acting like a grief stricken puppy? To hell with me and to the hell with you ,Sarah." That night Anthony went to bed without even having his dinner. A part of his heart was angry with Sarah and the other part longed to have a good look at her serene face. His arms missed holding her. He kept staring at Sarah's pillow as if it was actually her. Every night he silently wished that when he wakes up in the morning, he would find Sarah sleeping beside him.Exhausted with Sarah's thoughts, soon he fell asleep.  Morning when he woke up he found his arms wrapped around Sarah's pillow tightly as though they were holding Sarah herself. He got up with a sadness thinking about another day without Sarah. He ate his meals silently, he slept alone, he did all his activities without any disturbance or irritation from Sarah, something which he kept complaining always. But now he could no longer live another day without talking to her.  He realized that somewhere Sarah has become an important part of his daily routine and without her , he felt lost. In office too Anthony seemed lost which made Max suspicious of something off between him and Sarah. He tried to get it out from Anthony, but this time it seemed impossible. Anthony kept stubbornly dumb. But Max could feel that Anthony was down emotionally. Even when they were small, Anthony remained aloof, never displaying his sadness, but he was never distressed. He was hurt and angry but never seemed drowned emotionally. So Max suggested "Hey buddy why don't you go home soon? Today there are no more pending important issues so why don't you go and relax? You seem completely drained." Ignoring the rest Anthony just picked up the words why don't you go home soon. Immediately he jumped off his chair and told Max " Yes you are right. I have to go home soon. You are genius, Max. OK now bye." He rushed to the basement and locked his car and left it there. He came out on the road and waved at a cab. No cabs stopped as it was a busy road. Finally a cab stopped but the driver too denied to go to Rockwood Street as he wont find any passenger from there .  But Anthony was determined to reach home sooner, so he offered him double the fare and the driver agreed happily. Not everyday do the cab drivers get a customer who would willingly pay double the fare amount. Anthony asked the cab driver to stop the car a few meters away from the main entrance to his property. He paid double the fare and walked cautiously , trying to make as less sound as his shoes could. His heart was racing and he was perspiring as if he was a trespasser who had entered into someone else's premises. He found the door locked and silently put his key in and turned the knob as if he was committing some burglary. He got in silently through the slight opening of the door.  He walked through the living room and then passed to the dining room , when he finally saw Sarah chopping vegetables in the kitchen. Getting to look at her, his heart stopped beating. He felt as if everything had disappeared and his eyes could only see Sarah. He hungrily starred at her face that was busily concentrated on the chopping, unaware of his presence. Sarah was wearing a white corset shaped sleeveless top and a white skirt. She pulled her hair up in a messy bun with twirls falling on her face. Without even a peck of makeup, she looked the most beautiful woman, Anthony had ever seen. Not that he would be interested if any beautiful woman passed him. But his heart felt sad looking at her stressed face. She seemed to have become thinner and paler. Her eyes seemed to be sad and swollen and dark circles too have appeared on her face. He wanted to hold her and never let her go. If she wanted he would fall on his knees and apologize her for the mistake he has committed,  of which he had no idea.  He was so lost in trying to take in Sarah's glimpse as much as he could, forgetting even to blink. He felt like if he blinked Sarah would disappear again, which he could not afford anymore. He was finally dumbstruck by just looking at his wife. Never hurt the heart that loves. A broken heart may not be able to love back even if it wishes for.
