Chapter 26The ambulance raced toward Rochester General Hospital with lights flashing and sirens screaming. One police car led the way, threaded a path through traffic and at intersections, while a second squad car followed closely behind. Rochester General, the closest hospital to the beach, was located on Portland Avenue. The 528-bed facility opened in 1847, the last year of the American Civil War. The hospital grew during the post-war years, and currently employed over 1,000 primary care physicians and specialists. Richards stopped at Lake and Ridge. They had no reason to blow through red lights. They would arrive at the hospital a few minutes behind the ambulance and police escort.
