Chapter XXVI

~ Rain  "I think it is time you know." He paused again. "I am your destiny." I was not sure if it would have been too weird, asking him whether that was his first and last names or not. It would be hilarious, though. It was not that I did not believe him as much as I did not understand.  "My what?" I repeated.  "You do not believe, do you?"  "No." My answer was short, simple and straight to the point which had become something that was lacking in most people I know.  "I thought so." He admitted. "I did not come here to get you to believe me. I have a different reason," He explained.  "Then why did you decide to come?"   "I only observe." He repeated a statement that he previously said. "I am prohibited to interfere with whoever I get assigned to unless..." He trailed off. "It is time that person dies."  "Does that mean..." I trailed off. My eyes widened. "That I am about to die?" I finished my sentence, feeling my heart drop. Not now. I wanted to do more things before I died. But then I remembered what he said earlier. Once I enter the enchanted forest I can't get out and will eventually get eaten by the beast. I realized dying was inevitable. The slim chance of surviving was too far away from my reach.  "You were." He replied.  "What do you mean, I was?" I repeated.  "What I mean is that you were about to die when the beast came. I came to collect your soul and end my job with you if were to die, but you did not." I could not make out if he was disappointed that I did not die or if this was his normal way of talking. However, the way he said that he came to collect my soul so casually gave me an uneasy feeling in my gut and indicated either that he was used to it or that he enjoyed it.  "I was destined to die, but I did not. How?" Using specific words while talking to 'My destiny' felt weird.  "Your destiny may alter at any moment, depending on the choices you make right before it." He paused. "You were destined to die several times, more than you think, but luck was on your side every time..." He trailed off. "up till now." I used to believe that destiny once it was set cannot be changed, but he seemed to have a different opinion. "Were you there?" I decided to ask.  "Every time." He replied with a simple and fathomable answer, unlike him.  "If that is so, why did you decide to appear now?" I pursed my lips. "Is not that prohibited?" "This time is different." He started. "Even if I leave now, you won't be able to get out of the forest on your own and the beasts will eventually get to you." My heart dropped again after acquiring slight hope that he might tell me a way out.  "Now you are just contradicting yourself." I started. "You said my destiny was altered and that I was not going to die, but here you are stating the exact opposite."  "I did not say you were going to die." He raised an eyebrow. "You are the one twisting my words."  "If I am not then, how the hell am I supposed to do to get out of this enchanted forest?" I said, emphasizing the word 'enchanted'.  "You can't do anything." I was on the verge of punching him in the face, but then I questioned myself if he was really there. Apparently, my mind started working again since I started to overthink if this was all an illusion, the enchanted forest was casting on my head. What if the beast, my destiny and all of this is just an illusion? I eyed my so called destiny suspiciously. "No, it is not." He spoke out of nowhere, causing me to jump at his sudden words. Did he just read my mind?  "Did you read my mind?" I decided to ask him aloud. However, his answer was a sly smile that I was able to deduce he was wearing from his glowing eyes. I waited for an answer for as long as my patience lasted. "Your answer?"  "I hear your every thought." He started. "I know what you are about to do." Maybe I should have settled for the silent reply and the smirk after all. This sounded creepy... and intimidating.  "Do you see the future?" I asked and for once, I did ask something near to a smart question.  "I only see a few seconds into the future. I do not know your every move. You make your choices and I just observe."  "You never answered me." I paused. "Why did you show yourself knowing that it is prohibited?"  "You may not acknowledge this fact, but you are a different case. You are special." Special, huh? This was what a Mom would have told me... If I did have any. Suddenly, I remembered that he could hear my thoughts. I covered my mouth with my palms and blinked repeatedly. Time to come back to my old, dumb self. "I can see it, you are not like the people I was previously assigned to. Believe me when I tell you this, you are something else." His words somehow managed to get to me, making me feel a little better. A small smile escaped my lips, but it was too dark for him to notice, so it was no big deal.  "Can I ask you something?" A question suddenly popped in my head. "You mentioned earlier that the beast can't see and only follow their hearing sense. We have been talking for a while now, how come none of them made it here?"  "Time and space stops whenever you catch sight of me, therefore, they can't get to us here." He started. "This normally happens when a person is about to die." He kept giving me hope that I might survive then, crushing it a second later. Was it some sort of enjoyment for him to see me suffer?  "Are you immortal?" I asked out of the blue.  "What do you think?" His question made me feel dumb. Of course he is, dumbass. He has silver eyes. It screams immortal.  "I get assigned to observe and create the destiny of a person until that person dies." He started walking closer to me with steady steps. "I watch that person make his choices throughout life and when the wrong choice is finally made, I come to collect his soul and move on to the next person then, the cycle continues."  "Why are you telling me this?" I said as he kept getting closer.  "Because you made a wrong choice." He was right before my eyes. I could feel his existence. It was real, I could say for sure, not an illusion as I have thought. "And I only came to fulfill my job." He looked intensely in my eyes. I gulped, looking away, and avoiding his gaze. My heart was racing and as a result I could feel my cheeks flush.  "But I change my mind..." He trailed off. "I am going to give you a second chance."  *** Hey again!! Another author's note.
