1912, Southampton
It had been three days, and the jury was still split on its decision. Jurors Number Six and Seven led a group who wanted to see the reverend executed for his crimes, even though punishment wasn’t their question. They continued to bring up unrelated issues to keep their faction firmly rooted in a guilty verdict.
For Jurors Number Twelve and Three, the issue was about his standing in the community; in their mind that was also their opportunity. Today they would try the same tactic as their opposition: Bible verses.
“Before we begin today, Juror Number Twelve has asked to speak,” Six said after he called the group to order.
“Thank you,” Twelve said. “I’m going to start my time with a reading from the Bible. Luke, chapter thirteen verses ten through seventeen.
