Chapter 14 1901The next morning, Adam’s own name startled him out of his recent habit of walking with his head down, trying to avoid meeting that Captain’s eye. “Evenschmidt! What the hell you going up that way for?” He turned to see Mr. Wallens, the boss of the freight section. He wasn’t a whole lot taller than Adam but he was pure muscle, with a mop of unruly black hair and a thick beard to match. “I’m the fireman’s boy, sir. We got to load water for the trip.” Mr. Wallens shook his head and walked toward Adam, one burly arm held out. “Guess they never got word to you. You’re with me today, probably for a while. Time to learn why all the smart men are at the back of the train, not the front. You’re better off back here, anyway. I hear the damn fool owners are thinking about letting
