Talia quickly became familiar with the company’s work routine. She had worked so hard for five years for this day, and she had to be very cautious with every step that followed.
One day at work, she heard a commotion outside and she got up to see what was happening. She walked out of the office and saw a man in a business suit standing in the reception area arguing with Grace.
She asked her colleague who he was, and was told that the man was Mr. Aster, who had come to follow up on a divorce case. His wife had cheated on him and even transferred his property without his knowledge. This was Grace’s case and it had not been resolved.
Talia frowned upon hearing this. Divorce cases like this were very common. How was it that Grace could not resolve this?
She got up and walked over elegantly.
“Excuse me, may I ask what’s going on?” Talia asked.
Mr. Aster was so frustrated that he did not mince his words. “Is your law firm even capable of resolving this? Ms. Donovan, you’ve been going around in circles and now you’re saying that we can’t win the case and want me to leave? You are a worthless fraud!”
As soon as he finished speaking, he swiped the glass of water on the table toward Grace and the water splashed onto her. She was drenched and trembling angrily. “You... you deserve to be cuckolded! So what if I can’t handle your case? What can you do about it? Go ahead and lodge a complaint and see who will entertain you!”
Mr. Aster was about to erupt but Talia quickly intervened and said, “Mr. Aster, please calm down. Allow me to help you resolve this problem.” She then presented her name card to him.
Mr. Aster initially sneered as he looked at the card. However, his expression began to change as he took a second look at it. He then looked up at Talia in surprise and remarked, “You... you’re Ms. Miller from Washington DC?”
“Yes, it’s me,” Talia replied with a beautiful smile.
“I heard about you a long time ago and even asked someone to reach out to you to help me with some of my family legal matters. Unfortunately, you were in Washington DC at that time. Are you working for DK now?”
Talia nodded elegantly.
“That’s great!” Mr. Aster pushed Grace aside, stepped forward to Talia, and politely asked, “Could you please give me some advice, Ms. Miller?”
Talia went through the entire case with him in detail and even formulated an action plan for him. Mr. Aster nodded and praised her repeatedly for her professionalism and great attitude. Grace fumed as she stood uselessly on one side and became the butt of the office joke as colleagues gossiped about how ineffective she was.
“Thank you, Ms. Miller. I will do as you advised. I will call you if I have any questions again. By the way, I will now engage you for all my legal matters!”
“Thanks, Sir, don’t worry about your case, I am confident that we have a good chance of winning,” Talia said and walked him to the lift lobby.
As soon as Mr. Aster left, Grace said angrily, “Ms. Miller, don’t you know that he’s my client? How can you snatch my client from me?”
Talia replied calmly, “It’s fair competition and I also did it for the good of the Firm. If things got out of hand, it would have hurt the interests of the Firm. Ms. Donovan should understand the consequences if that happens, right?”
Grace said with a sneer, “You... don’t think that you can just waltz your way in and replace me, you wrench.”
This was the first time Grace felt threatened as she faced this beautiful and talented lady.
The next day, Grace took a rare day off to spend some time with her daughter. She took her daughter out for the day and eventually brought her to the office. Talia was busy working when Grace’s daughter walked into her office with an ice cream cone. She looked up from her documents and saw a beautiful and innocent little angelic face.
Talia reached out toward the little girl but Grace harshly pulled the child to her side and said sarcastically, “Emma, you are mommy’s good girl. You will protect mommy, won’t you?” The little girl remained silent with her head bowed. Grace wagged her finger in Talia’s direction and continued, “Look, this woman not only stole mommy’s client but probably wants to steal your daddy too.”
“Take daddy away?” The little girl’s expression changed when she heard what she said and replied, “I want my daddy.”
Mason heard the commotion and walked out of his office toward Emma. Grace realized that this was her chance to stick it to Talia.
When she heard Mason’s footsteps approach the room, she suddenly reached out, grabbed Talia’s arm, and said, “Ms. Miller, can’t we resolve this amicably? Must you resort to violence? My daughter is here... argh!”
Before she finished her sentence, Grace collapsed and pretended to be unconscious. Emma was startled by this and cried, “Mommy, wake up, wake up...”
Mason stepped into Talia’s office just in time to see Grace collapsing to the ground and his frightened daughter who was crying inconsolably. He quickly grabbed Emma in his arms, rushed to Grace’s side, and shouted, “Call an ambulance!”
At the hospital.
Talia scoffed as she looked at Grace who lay motionlessly on the hospital bed. Talia sneered and thought, “Grace, you devious woman. You haven’t changed after all these years.”
Grace most likely prearranged for the doctor who examined her. After going through some checks, he said solemnly, “Mr. Campbell, Ms. Donovan’s injuries are rather severe. She needs to rest well and must not be provoked again by anyone.”
Mason nodded and turned to ask, “What happened just now?”
A colleague whispered, “Mr. Campbell, I think I heard Talia and Grace arguing. I don’t know what happened but it looks like Ms. Donovan is the victim. Most likely Talia pushed her and she fell right in front of Emma.”
Mason looked at Talia coldly and said, “Why would you do such a thing in front of my daughter? Ms. Miller, explain yourself!”
Talia was unfazed and confident as her conscience was clear. There was nothing for her to fear.
“Mr. Campbell, I’m afraid you’ve been misled.” She tucked her hair behind her ears, raised her chin slightly, and stood upright righteously. “As lawyers, let’s allow the evidence to speak for itself. Since someone said that I did it, then please present the evidence.”
Talia glared at that colleague, who immediately lowered her head guiltily. Needless to say, she must be Grace’s lapdog who was trying to get her favor by accusing Talia of wrongdoing.
Mason hesitated and seemed to ponder if she was telling the truth. He squatted down and picked up his daughter.
“Emma, do you know who pushed mommy down?”
“Mommy... fell down...” Emma blinked her big innocent eyes and continued in her cute voice, “Aunt Talia...”
At that moment, the colleague immediately interrupted and put words in Emma’s mouth. “That’s right, Emma. You also saw this woman pushing your mommy down, didn’t you?”
Emma was a little nervous being questioned by all these adults. She bit her lips as she both nodded and shook her head.
Things were getting a little murky and looked bad for Talia, but she quickly thought of a plan.
“If the accusations against me are true, then her medical condition can’t be fake, right?” She smiled and said confidently to Mason, “Mr. Campbell, surely you can allow me to prove my innocence.”
Mason nodded and said, “Since you’re so confident, now I am certainly interested in the truth.”
“Good.” Talia walked out of the room and then returned with a flask of boiling water. She then said, “This is all an act. Ms. Donovan isn’t hurt and is just pretending to be unconscious. If you don’t believe me, I will pour all this hot water on her face and disfigure her!”
She then walked toward the bed, opened the flask, and began to act as if she was about to pour its contents over Grace’s face.
“Get the hell away from me!” Grace jumped out of the bed and ran behind Mason.
“You... you vicious woman! How dare you disfigure me! Mason, protect me from this vicious b***h!”
The tension in the room was so thick that you could cut it with a knife.
Grace then realized that she had been exposed and stood there helplessly.
Talia placed the flask on the table and exuded a strong sense of righteousness. She just stood there silently without saying a word.
“Ms. Donovan, you and I are both lawyers and should conduct ourselves professionally and ethically. These kinds of accusations are unnecessary. If you put as much effort into your work instead of such frivolous matters, then I am sure your clients will be very satisfied with your services and no one would be able to take them away from you.”
With one sentence, the entire incident was laid out in the open and it was clear to Mason that Grace had gone through all this out of jealousy.
“Grace, you really let me down!” Mason said frostily and walked out of the room.
Seeing Grace deflated and Mason storming away angrily, Talia could not help but feel a rare sense of victory.
