Chapter 1

(Astrid POV) “Miss Silas, the class started 15 minutes ago! And you are drenched in rain” Mrs. Peterson said as I sighed holding my wet bag close. “I’m sorry Miss, I was standing under shelter till the rain dies down but when I noticed it’s almost time for class, I ran,” I said as she sighed and told me to always have an umbrella especially since its rainy season. I sat on my usual seat in the corner of the room and opened my notebook. I lied. I wasn’t late because I was standing at a shelter. I was late because I went to the park. I love the rain. It helps me think. It helps me relieve stress. It helps me hide my tears. But most of all, it reminds me of him. I smiled at my memory of playing chase with him in the rain. It was one of the best memories I had. I wasn’t the girl who was always fond of rain. Hell, I despised it. My curly hair which I once spend hours straightening always gets messed up because of it. But he loves the rain. He always goes for a walk in the rain. And he used to drag me along. I would always complain about how my hair is messed up because of it but he would smile and say how beautiful I look with my naturally curly hair. I quickly wiped my tears before anyone noticed it. Every day was new and exciting with him. But not anymore. Now every day is the same. I wake up, go to med school, go for my part-time job, and go back to the hostel. Nothing is exciting. I have only a few friends but the ones I have are funny and caring. They kind of are the ones who make me alive. I have my lunches mostly with them and I go out with them although it’s rare. I usually like spending time alone in my room. I guess everything is going well. Well good, as long as I find something to keep myself busy. After my class, I made my way to my part-time. I always take a short cut and by a short cut, I mean a dirt road which is almost deserted. “Astrid!” a voice called from behind as I sighed. “Dave” I replied not even wanting to look behind. “Going for your part-time?” he asked as he walked to my side. “Yes,” I replied shortly as I increased my pace. “Cool. I’m heading over there too. I’m dying for some chicken wings” he grinned at me as I sighed and continued to walk, clearly annoyed by his ranting. Dave Jeffery. Age 23 and my senior. During my first year of college, I received constant ragging from him only to find out that he has a crush on me. By the time I reached the second year, he started to follow me asking for a date. It’s being a year and he still has no motive to spare me. Don’t get me wrong. He is very handsome and funny. He is the 'famous' senior who is the basketball team captain. Straight A. Super kind to everyone. But I am not ready to accept anyone in my life.  It’s being more than 5 years, yes. But I still can’t forget him and I don’t think I will anytime soon. “So what do you say?” he asked as he blocked my way. “Huh?” I asked as I looked at him confused. He let out a sigh before smiling sadly at me. “You didn’t hear a single thing I said huh?” he said as I looked at him with guilt. “Sorry,” I said as he shook his head. “It’s ok. I just asked if you would like to go for a dinner with me after your shift” he said as I looked at him, my face turning void. “I’m sorry,” I said before sighing. “Look, you are a sweet man but I am not interested in this. I just want to pass med and become a doctor” I said before walking around him. After walking a few steps I turned and looked at him. He was standing in the same place frowning and I sighed before walking my way. Suddenly I screamed as a van crossed in front of me. “Astrid!!!!” I heard Dave scream my name as men in thug clothes started to push me into the van. I struggled and even bit a man’s hand as they forced me. Dave ran to me and hit one of the men as he fell on the ground. Two more got out of the van as they started to beat up Dave. A man put a cloth over his mouth as he fell on the ground unconscious. “Dave!” I shouted but before I could get to him a similar cloth covered my mouth. The vision around me started to blur as I fell backward on my kidnapper’s arm. I pinched my thigh trying my best to stay awake. But it was so hard. I heard a mobile ring. “Hello, boss. I have captured his lover” I heard a man say through the call. “Yes sir, brining her over,” he said before I felt myself being put inside the van. “What about this kid?” I heard another say. “Take him with us. He saw our faces” the man who was on the phone told before everything around me turned blank.
