"Happy birthday, sweetheart!" Mom greeted me after she lit the candle on the cake. "It's time for you to make a wish and blow out your candle," Dad told me next. I didn't think twice and immediately closed my eyes to make a wish. Tonight is my tenth birthday but I'm still asking for one thing on each of my birthdays. "I hope that Mom and Dad will always be safe and that our family will always be whole and happy." After blowing out the candle, I immediately hugged Mom and Dad, "Thank you, Mom and Dad! I love you both so much!" "We love you more, sweetheart." A few moments later, we were all stunned when we suddenly heard a loud knock at the main door. "It seems like your guests are already here, sweetheart!" "Give me a second and I'll just open the door for them..." Mom was about to leave when Dad immediately stopped her, "No! Don't do it!" "Why?" Mom asked with furrowed brows. "T-they're here...they've found us!" Dad answered her at once, causing my forehead to crease. "N-no...Daniel, what are we going to do now?" I could feel the sudden fear in my mom's voice. "Mom, Dad? What is it?" "What is going on?" I instantly asked them, but none of them bothered to answer me. "I'll take care of them, get out of here right now!" Dad ordered Mom. "But what about you?!" "Don't worry about me! Just go and hurry up!" Dad insisted. "Come on, sweetheart." Mom held my hand tightly and we left immediately. "We'll go through the back of the house." Mom couldn't stop her tears anymore. "Mom, why are you crying? What's going on?" I asked her again, but she didn't say a word and we just kept on running. We hadn't gone far when we suddenly stopped running because we heard something loud like an explosion. "Your dad..." "Hope, sweetheart listen to me...you go first and I'll just help your dad!" "W-what? But Mom!" I swallowed hard as I felt fear rising in my chest. "Please sweetheart, just do it!" Mom begged me. "This is your Uncle Roman's address, go there and look for him!" She instantly handed me a piece of paper. "Mom, what does this mean?" "Why do I have to do this?!" My heart beat faster and tears began to fall on my cheeks because I'm scared. "Your dad and I will follow you right away! Listen to me this time and just go!" "No!!!" I was catching my breath when I suddenly woke up from a nightmare. "Miss Jade?" I immediately turned my attention to the door when I suddenly heard a series of knocks. "You may come in," I said to give her permission to enter my room. "Good morning, Miss Jade," Nanny Esther greeted me immediately the moment she entered my room. "Lord Roman wants to see you," she added which makes me stunned for a second. "Uncle is h-here?" I asked her. "Yes, Miss Jade. He just arrived this morning," she replied. It only took me about ten minutes before I finally got off and headed to the dining area. I deliberately made my move faster because the first thing Uncle Roman hated was making him wait for a long time. "My niece, finally you're here," Uncle Roman greeted me when I arrived at the dining area. "Good morning, Uncle." I didn't hesitate to immediately sit down at the dining table to join him in eating breakfast. "How was your trip? If you had only told me that today is your return to the country, I would have sent our men to pick you up at the airport," I added making him laugh softly. "It's fine," he answered me sparingly. "Also, I don't want to bother you any more since I know you're busy taking care of our business transactions," he added so I just nodded slightly. "Speaking of our business transactions, did things go well while I was gone?" he asked me which made me stunned in the middle of biting into the bread. "There's nothing you should worry about, Uncle. You knew me so well, I never failed when it comes to our business transactions," I responded. "It's good to hear that the other things taking your precious attention are not affecting the organization," Uncle said, causing my brows to snap together "W-what do you mean?" I asked him, but he didn't say a word and just took a deep breath. A little while later, I saw him place a book on top of the dining table. My brow furrowed slightly when I noticed that it was the same book I was currently reading. It was titled "Azrantha" and the content of the whole story only revolves around the life of vampires and the world they live in. "Someone told me you were looking for the author of that book," Uncle Roman uttered. "What's in that book and you seem so interested in the person who wrote it?" he added. "Don't tell me...this is all about the vampires again? Those paranormal creatures you blame for the loss of your parents?" he asked with a raised brow. "Uncle, you knew all along that I won't stop until I find those monsters that took my parents," I exclaimed as I gasped for air and squeezed my eyes shut. "I knew it!" he blurted sighing helplessly. My eyes snapped open to glance slightly at him. "Jade, it's been fifteen years but you still haven't found the creatures you're talking about!" he raised his voice in total disappointment. Jade, that's the name and identity given to me by Uncle Roman. From the moment I met him, he treated me like his real daughter and it changed my whole life. "And for fifteen years you've been trying to convince me what I saw that night wasn't real and I was just hallucinating because for you...vampires don't exist," I answered him firmly. Contrary to what Uncle Roman believes, I'm very certain that vampires truly exist because I'd seen them with my own eyes. To this day I could still remember their sharp fangs along with their glowing red eyes and they seemed eager to drink my blood that night. Uncle Roman gave me a slow nod and said, "Fine...do what you want and find them!" "But I also want to remind you that this should not be your priority." Our eyes met again when he glanced at me. "I expect a smooth business transaction from you tonight with the Lacerna clan. Especially since you're my sole heiress," he added. I just let out a sigh for he was right, I am indeed the sole heiress of the Fonacier clan and soon will take over as the leader of the Scarlet Furtres, a mafia organization currently led by Uncle Roman. "Don't worry, Uncle. I'll take care of everything." The corners of his mouth turned up into a genuine smile after I guarantee to meet his high expectations of me.
