Chapter 1
Amelia watched over the wedding in the alpha’s place, and tonight was the rehearsal dinner. Her father was still ill and not yet ready to leave his bed. Today was a dangerous day for the Golden Claw Pack and she was thankful to have Seth, her father's Beta, here to help her out. He was a few years older than her and they had a close relationship. They had practically grown up together, and she was happy to see him promoted to Beta when his father died years ago. His father was the previous Beta and she was glad her father chose him even as young as he was at the time. Recently, they had been ruling side by side while her father was on bed rest. She was happy to have an excuse not to be in a dress. She had always hated dresses. And she was sure her half-sister didn't even want her to be in her bridal party. Amelia had never been the closest to her younger sister, Cassidy. Her stepmother Margret always focused on Cassidy and treated Amelia like a second thought. So, when Cassidy met her mate at the yearly Mabon ball, Amelia became a long-forgotten memory at the back of Margret’s mind. Amelia was an average-looking girl, nothing like Cassidy. Where Cassidy was blond and straight, hers was chocolate brown and curled. Cassidy had brilliant blue eyes her dad likened to sapphires, while hers were amber. She wasn’t skinny, but not exactly fat either. If she hadn’t been the daughter of THE alpha, she would have been invisible. Her stepmother often asked how such an ordinary girl was born from the most exemplary pack, the most favored by the Lycans and the only ones allowed anywhere near them. Amelia often wondered the same thing. Her wolf is where her looks were more in her favor. Her father was an alpha and her mother, half Lycan, means she had a very large and powerful wolf. Cerri was large and had fur so white it almost seemed silver in the moonlight. She was very proud, and Amelia loved her. Amelia walked the perimeter with Seth, checking on the guards stationed there. Many packs had come to attend, and peace is easily broken. "Do you think they will behave?" she asked as they rounded the corner of the event center. “Do you plan on antagonizing them?” He teased. “Not on purpose. But you know how the other packs can be. They are eager for us to fall in the eyes of the Lycan king. I wouldn’t put it past someone to try something.” Cerri sighed as they walked past the woods. All work and no play leads to one bored wolf, itching to run through the forest. “Ames, we have everything in place. I will not let anything happen to you, or your father, I promise.” He put his hand on her shoulder, trying to reassure her. She stared into his blue eyes that stung like a cold breeze on a winter day. He had beautiful, caring eyes. She set her hand on top of his. “Thank you. I’m glad I have you, you’re the best friend and ally a person could ask for.” She said letting herself smile a little. At this, a limo pulled up to the event center, and out came the groom’s party. Lucas staggered out clearly slightly intoxicated, which would be impressive for a werewolf if he wasn’t supposed to be married in under 24 hours. Seth patted her shoulder one last time and walked over to corral the men into the building. Lucas was not an ugly man; he was actually quite handsome. He almost looked as if the Goddess had carved him out of marble herself, but she couldn’t shake the feeling something was off about him. His father, for example, James alpha of the Redtooth Clan was a direct rival of her father. Amelia looked up at the rising moon. She took a deep breath and, after one more round, entered the event center. The tables were splattered with the colors of spring and the tables were mostly filled by this time. The colors weren’t bad, pink and green with a gold accent, but she never did like pink. She shivered as she remembered the pink bridesmaid dress she could have been subjected to. Amelia took her seat towards the back and nodded to Seth as he passed her. Warriors were strategically placed around the room. Tonight was merely a test run for the wedding that would happen tomorrow. Several of the families from the higher packs were here, but all of them will be there tomorrow. All with their own security and all hoping to get time with the Lycan king, Eric. He would not be here tonight of course, and would only show up to the wedding for a few minutes to show respect to the Golden Claw Pack. She was asked to personally be by his side. He would first visit her father, and then the newlywed couple. She nodded to the Omega that set her dinner in front of her and kept her eyes and ears sharp as the speeches started. It began with her stepmother talking about how she knew Cassidy was destined for great things from a young age. All the speeches sounded the same as she ate and watched. It didn’t seem like anything was amiss, but the rogues had also been aggressive recently and she hoped the warriors around the perimeter were enough in the event there was an attack. She relaxed slightly as Seth motioned the all-clear after making the first round. She finished her dinner right as dessert was being served, some sort of chocolate cake-like monstrosity was set in front of her and she poked at it. Amelia was not one for sweets, especially chocolate. But, since the Redtooth Clan paid for this evening's meal and she didn’t want to offend them, she swallowed a few mouthfuls of the rich dessert. Her sister’s future father-in-law took the mic and began his speech. Amelia kept her ears sharp but didn’t have her full attention on him. Ready for action at a moment's notice. WHAT?! Cerri roared as the words soaked into Amelia’s brain. “And, I cannot wait for the Redtooth Clan and the Golden Claw pack to be more than allies. To be joined and become the strongest pack the world has ever seen.” James finished, smiling and looking directly at her. She swallowed back the growl forming in her throat, threw the cake into the trash, and as calmly as she could, walked out. She had to check on her father. This couldn’t be true.
