I slipped a sideways glance at Lafitte and then back to the trembling waitress. “Hey,” I softened my voice. “You can’t tell anyone what you saw tonight.” Her breath came out in puffs. “I’m not sure what I saw. You killed a man and he exploded. How does that happen?” She looked at me with tears welling in her eyes. The pain and fright were startling. “What you saw wasn’t a man,” I spoke in a low voice.
