“Good night,” I whispered the next night as I snuck out of Becca’s room. Kevin had finally gotten to where he put himself to bed after reading for a little while. Becca, though, she didn’t want me to leave some nights. And it always happened when I had a ton of stuff to finish. I tiptoed down the stairs and paused, listening. No sounds. No movement. With any luck she’d stay asleep. She hadn’t slept well since she’d gotten sick the weekend before. The night she was sick, she was so exhausted she slept through the night.
