Lana’s POV
Echo must be wrong; Alpha Ryan cannot be my mate. I continue to stare at him in shock. He takes a deep breath, looks behind him at Abigail and then looks back at me. I secretly tell him to go to Abigail and to not make a scene when he starts walking over to me. I try to turn around to leave when I bump into Michael, the gamma’s son. The appetizers end up going everywhere and he looks at me with rage seeping out of him. I try to drop my gaze and I completely forget about Alpha Ryan.
“You little b*tch. Did you do this to me on purpose?” He asks me.
I can feel the pounding of my heart in my ears, and I feel light-headed. I become flabbergasted and utter the first word I can think of, “No.”
My face instantly drains when I see a wicked grin spread across his face. “Did you just speak to me?”
I feel my heart stop. I cannot believe I just broke a major rule and in the middle of a party none the less. I can feel the gaze of the people around us. I brace myself for the impact of his blow when I see begin to swing his arm, but it never comes. Instead, I hear a growl coming from directly behind me and look up to see Alpha Ryan clenching Michael’s wrist. “Do not touch my mate,” Alpha Ryan says as the entire party gasps.
I can see Michael’s eyes grow wide as I hear Abigail shout, “Your mate! She cannot be your mate because I am your mate.”
Alpha Ryan releases Michael’s arm and I feel him turn me around to face him. I continue to keep my head down wishing that this was all a horrible nightmare and that I will wake up soon. Instead, I feel his hand under my chin as he tilts my chin up to look at him. I feel the sparks from his touch, and I do as he wants and I look at him, I can see the afternoon stubble growing on his face and that his eyes are deep blue. I watch his lips as I hear him say, “Mine.”
I can feel Echo is overjoyed with finding our mate. I wish I shared the same feeling for her. I watched him for a moment when I see him shake his head and his eyes are no longer dark blue but instead a light blue. He instantly drops his hand and I feel cold suddenly.
Something must be wrong, Echo tells me. Mate is distant.
I cannot grasp what she is saying when I see him look at me with disgust written all over his face. He takes a step back from me. I ache for his touch again and to feel the sparks. I try to smile at him, but he continues to stare at me with disgust when I feel a gut-wrenching pain at his words. “I, Alpha Ryan of the New Moon Pack reject you as my mate.”
With those words I drop to my knees and instantly feel tears streak my face. I look up to say something at him when he turns around and takes Abigail’s hand and he leaves the party.
