CHAPTER 9 (Seductress)
I snuggled under the sheets. I did not know that I can be happy just by saying ‘yes’ to him. Three letters yet a powerful word. I sighed and with a smile on my lips, started to open my social media account. Yep, I had this made months ago and that was because of Mariah. She’s the one who keeps on insisting that I need it and I think today is the right time to use it too. I felt giddy when I changed my status. I bit my lower lip to suppress a loud squeal. After I changed it, I placed back my phone on the bedside table and I stared at the ceiling.
I have so many realizations today. I realized that ‘life is what you make it’ and that ‘everything happens for a reason’. That two old quotes makes sense now to me. If I did not decided to get out from the wings of the Carlins then I will never be this free. I will never experience nor taste a life without someone controlling or oppressing you. It is not about me being so feeble hearted, it’s just that, I never fight nor defended for myself even once against them because I feel like I owe them something because they are the ones who fed me. Everything happens for a reason, sometimes you need not to find the reason to see whether everything really happens or not. You just need to make it happen and soon enough, you’ll see that it was the reason that you are looking for. Vague as it seems but nothing is clear from the very start in life right?
I closed my eyes and I was about to fell asleep when my phone went frenzy. Who will call me at this late hour of the night? In normaI circumstances, I will now groan in annoyance and let my phone ring until it rings no more. But since I am happy, I swiped the green button of my phone and placed it next to my ear. I heard the sound of the wind then followed by silence. A prank call?
“Hello? Are you there?” I asked.
“I’m here my love.” My heart started to thump in joy. You will not stay still are you, my heart? I smiled unconsciously as I heard his voice.
“Why are you still up? It’s already late. I was about to sleep when you called.”
“I just can’t contain the happiness that I am feeling right now Miracle. After all the trials I faced, now, you are really my girl. I can’t sleep coz when I close my eyes, all I can see is how beautiful you smile and my heart reacts like I am racing for miles now.” Oh his corny but sweet words.
“When did you start to become this corny?” I laughed a bit and I sat up on the bed. I grabbed the pillow and put it against the bed’s headboard and leaned there comfortably. The warmth of the fabric material made me feel good. I never had the time to realize this things too before yet I did now. I guess that’s the effect of this foreign feeling to me.
“I became this sweet not corny, when I met you. it was like, the angels sang a sweet melody as they descend the heavens.”
“You are reading too much fiction.” I laughed hard as I teased him. Since when did he become poetic? Or whatever it is called?
“Hey! That’s romance and not fiction,” he defended. I can clearly imagine him with contorted face.
“Is it? But romance is fiction too.”
“Not everything you know. You are my romance but you are not a fiction. You will never be a fiction to me because you are my reality Miracle.”
I fell silent. He always has a word to contadict mine. He never ends a conversation not unless he is the winner and I like that more. I like people who can stand for themselves because I know that I am not like them. I am the contrast of the term ‘brave enough’.
“Hey, you still awake?”
“I am. Just thinking of something…” he cut me off by asking a question.
“You mean me?” I can now imagine the proud smirk plastered on his face. I need to break it to him a bit. You know, just a little bit fun.
“No. I said ‘something’ not someone. You should learn the difference between those two words.” I suppressed a laugh because I know that he looks like a kid having tantrums right now. I give a stress on the word something.
“Night, I’ll just end this call.”
“Okay. Good night too, love.” I pressed the end button. I know that he was still shocked with my endearment so I just give him some time to fully internalize everything. I got up from the bed and went inside the bathroom to pee and to brush my teeth too. I looked at the mirror that was hanging on the wall. I saw how glowing my face is. Wait… glowing? Where did it came from?
I tapped my face using my hands continuously. Like, I am telling myself to come back to my senses but nothing happened. Hay! I need a good sleep tonight. Just as when I picked the blanket, I heard a vigorous knock. I opened the door, only to be shocked when a pair of arms enveloped me in a tight hug.
I closed my eyes and a smile never escaped my lips. His warmth spreading on my system. Never did I felt comfortable to a male’s hug other than his as of the moment. One silent wish came to my mind. “I wish our relatiionship stays strong.”
***
The room was filled with white to light yellowish lights that were emitted by the multiple small bulbs that were attached to the walls and also on the sides of the huge vanity mirror. The lady’s long hair cascades freely behind her back and her creamy complexion was in contrast with her dark colored clothes. She pulled the golden vanity chair that was covered with pink fur and sat there. For a long time, she stared at her reflection on the mirror.
Her lashes were thick and long, of course, she used eyelash extensions so there is no doubt about that. Being a daughter of a half Chinese descent, she has chinky eyes that she emphasized using her favorite black liquid eyeliner. She loves to apply some of it and she love to use the winged pattern every time. Her face was perfectly highlighted. Her experience in using cosmetics for a long time is no joke. She picked up a small transparent plastic container with a black cap and twisted it open. Applying the bronzing powder using her fingers, she smile when she saw her reflection. She applied some liquid to give shine to her highlighted areas and later picked a honeysuckle lip balm and applied it to her lips.
She grabbed her favorite designered bag from the table and started to exit from the walk in closet. She was in the grandstaircase of their mansion when she saw a handsome guy about her age. He was patiently sitting beside a business man who was talking to her Dad. He must have felt that someone is staring, he chose to look up and their gazes met. She inhaled sharply when she saw how expressive his eyes are. Damn those hazel orbs that makes her feel at awe.
The guy looked at her without interest and just went back to what he was doing earlier before they were shamelessly staring at each other – or rather, her shamelessly eyeing the living Adonis in their living room. She slowly walked down the stairs while she was gripping the balustrades really tight. She thinks that if not for the balustrade, she’s on the cold floor now because her energy was seemed to be sucked away. When she reache the tiled floor of the first floor, her heels made a clicking sound in contrast with the floor. The stair is carpeted that is why, she have walked down without a sound.
Her Dad looked at her direction and smile. He motioned for her to go there and sit and she obliged. She did not look at the guy who now is just about three to two and a half meters away from her. She straightened her back and smile at his Dad’s guest. She does not want to appear like she’s affected by his strong presence
“Mr. Sheil, I am glad to introduce to you my daughter, Maxine Cheng Carlin.” Her Dad smiled as he introduced her. The other man nodded and said,
“What a beautiful daughter you have here Mr. Carlin. You sure have been blessed.” The two men laughed out loud and then went back to a serious face afterwards. The other man cleared his throat first before he spoke again.
“This is my son, my only heir, Grey Sheil,” he said, introducing the guy. They have talked a lot more about the plans and visions for the company but Maxine heed no attention to it. She was focused on the small information about him.
So his name is Grey. Maxine whispered to herself and she became interested about him. She lised to whatever Mr. Sheil will say. She dare not to miss any single information about the guy.
“He is currently enrolled at WAIV University and is taking up Finance,” the old man informed.
“Is the enrollment still going on?” she asked. At the back of her mind screams that she needs to be there. This is the first time that she was smitten on a guy.
“The enrollment has already ended on Friday unfortunately. But surely, your Dad can pull some strings for you if you are really interested to being admitted there. I understand your reason…” Maxine’s heart beat so fast that she felt it rise to her throat. Oh my gosh! Does he know that I have developed an unnamed feelings for his son?
“That University is one of the top universities here in the country and it is an honor and a privilage to graduate there.” Maxine was relieved. She smiled half heartedly and she simply wiped a small bead of sweat rolling on her forehead. Why is she so nervous anyway? It is not as if it is bad to have feelings for someone but she realizes that it will be embarassing if he knew and he is not interested about her at all. But she did not care anymore. She wants him and by hook or by crook she’ll get him. She gets whatever she wants and she strongly believes on that.
“Dad, I want to be enrolled their too. I’m not enrolled in any University yet and this will be a great training ground for me as well.”
Her father was a little bit unsure if he’ll let her go there but in the end, he thought that this will be the best choice for everyone. He simply nodded, meaning, he is already agreeing to her daughter’s request. Maxine made a triumphant smirk at the back of her mind. She bade goodbye as she needs to meet her friends at a restaurant. She kissed her Dad’s cheek and went outside with head held high.
