The homicide investigation took several unforeseen turns, the first being that Senior Regional Investigator Leonardo Tiepolo took charge of the case. Lancellotti would stay on, reporting directly to his new superior. Within days of the announcement, Tiepolo held a press conference. He was middle-aged and tall with a prominent paunch and a bushy salt and pepper mustache. Sporting a pugnacious scowl, he boasted that his office had succeeded in pressuring the attorneys into revealing the identities of the clubs’ silent partners, who were being questioned about any involvement in Rudi’s disappearance as well as other financial improprieties, which might have bearing on the case.
