Leaving the native town
The night of December 31st, 2019, when the snow was falling like soft cotton balls and the streets were cheering with chatters and happiness; Mariane was sitting beside the window and watched people congratulating Happy New Year to each other. She was writing down all the details of the night on her favorite red diary, gifted by her late grandmother on her 8th birthday. She has been writing since then as the diary has proved to be an excellent source of expressing all her emotions and feelings which she finds difficult to share anywhere else. Everything seemed so simple and enchanted in the town of Wingdale, that Mariane often thinks whether things are going to have a different turn for her in the coming year. Her mother called her from downstairs.
“Mariane darling, rush down. The dinner is ready”
“Yes, mama coming right away”
Giving a last glimpse to the scenic view outside as if she was never going to see winters or a new year in Wingdale, Mariane left her room. The dining table was teeming with a number of her favorite dishes. She even got excited and sat down on the chair waiting for his father to arrive so that she can relish the dinner with her favorite beings. Mariane and her mother Caroline started discussing how she is going to catch up with her colleagues as her school was about to end soon.
“You have always been a bright student, my dear and I am sure you are going to earn your fair position in college too”
“Yes, mama but I fear if I will be able to make new friends in college”
“You should not worry, I am sure that Sara will be going to college with you,” said Caroline
“Yes, mama I am sure she will be joining me but what if she moved out or what if we don’t get admitted to the same college, how I will be able to cope up alone” Mariane responded in a light tone
“I know honeypot, it’s because you are so special you just need to radiate your positive vibes, if they are meant to be there they will be, otherwise they won’t be allowed to explore you, honey”
The discussion was just ongoing when William, Mariane’s father opened the door and entered with a mild smile on his face. Mariane rushed to her father, hugged him, and then looked with her wide green eyes filled with utter happiness and warmth. Her father kissed her forehead and headed towards the dining table.
“Hey there, how did the day go Will?”
“Yes, it was alright dear,” said William to Caroline
They sat down and started their dinner followed by a prayer. It was a quiet night at dinner. Mariane noticed her father while eating as he seemed rather worried about something. After dinner, her father asked Mariane about her quizzes and assignments which were ongoing to conclude her school.
“How are you holding up dear? I heard from Miss Simons that you are doing so well in your science project even you are doing it on your own”
“Yeah that’s a great achievement dear” added Caroline
“Thank you, papa, mama” Mariane shrugged with a shy smile
“I have something to tell you,” said William
“Yes, papa what is it?”
Holding hands of both her daughter and wife, William took a moment of silence and mustered up the courage to encounter his biggest fear
“Our company has shut down as Mr. Filler has decided to move his factory and assets to Crystal valley”
“It can’t be” uttered, Caroline
“What you are going to do papa, what we are going to do” added Mariane with a shrieking voice
“I am not having many options left honey, I guess we will have to move to Crystal valley,” said William in a sadder tone
Mariane rushed upstairs to her room, jumped onto her bed, put a pillow on her face, and wept bitterly. She was unable to swallow the fact that she was never going to see Wingdale again and leaving her only best friend Sara behind lest to never see her again.
“How can I leave my school like this, how I am going to adapt to a new town, new people, and new school?” Mariane asked to herself
It was around 2 pm when Mariane walked downstairs to go out and take some fresh air. While passing through her parent’s room, she heard whispers of her parents arguing about the Crystal valley. She took her right ear close to the door to hear their chatter.
“How she will be able to cope up with the reality when she will come to know of it, we left the town long ago to get rid of this fear” uttered Caroline shockingly
“I know it must be hard for her but I am sure we will protect her against anything may it be ….” The sound faded
She rushed back to her room and locked it as if she was being followed by some nightmare. She found herself amidst fear and chaos. The fact that she was leaving her hometown where she was born and brought up was enough to make her mad.
It was 7 am when she opened her eyes and realized that she fell asleep while mourning about the incidents and exposures that struck her last night. She gets up and changed. Without having her breakfast, Mariane rushed to her only best friend Sara, whose house was just in the back street. She knocked at her door. Sara’s mother opened the door and welcomed Mariane with a warm hug and congratulated Happy New year to her but Mariane was so much entangled in her thoughts that she promptly asked
“Is Sara upstairs, Mrs. Colin’s?”
“Yes, she is,” said Mrs. Colin’s in rather an astonished tone
Mariane rushed to her room and started beating it. Sara opened the door.
“Hey aren’t you taking the total heat of the year on the first day?” said Sara with a hysterical laugh
“There is no time for this, I have something to tell you” added Mariane in grief
“What is it Mariane?” asked Sara
“We are leaving town today Sara,” said Mariane
“This ain’t no 1st April, stop making a fool out of me” Sara turned and started sorting her things
“I am serious, papa’s got transferred and he has nothing to earn through in this town” added Mariane
“We are moving to my parent’s native town Sara, I, I just came to say goodbye”
“But Mariane what about the school, it is ending with our science project, how you are going to continue in your new school, you will be left behind, your grades will be ruined, you just can’t go now, not now” uttered Sara with a shrieking voice
“I don’t know, I guess I will have to do what will be required of me,” said Mariane with her eyes teeming with tears
Sara promptly hugged her and kissed her on the cheek and whispered
“You will be okay, you are a warrior, I am always here you can come to me whenever you want just don’t forget that I love you and I care for you”
They looked at each other with a sad smile. Then Sara left with Mariane to offer her a proper goodbye. Everything was packed and the car was waiting for Mariane to hop in. They were holding each other’s hands when Mariane’s father called her to come. They hugged each other and said goodbye. Mariane sat in the car and the engine started.
“Are you ready my dear?” asked Caroline
“I guess mama” added Mariane while looking through the window
The New Year will turn out to be this much astonishing and challenging, was the least that Mariane could have ever imagined. After a drive of 5 hours, they arrived at Crystal valley which was a quiet town with the least population and a wide canopy of a forest. Then they finally reach their house where her grandparents once lived. The house was old-fashioned and dark with some old pictures and decoration pieces. Somehow it felt familiar to be here like it was destined to. She was allotted the room which was once her dad’s. She put her luggage aside and sat beside the window to take an outside view but it was nothing like Wingdale. She could see the pathway leading to the forest just across her house. It was around 8 pm when she saw a dotted line through the forest. She felt like something was watching her. She started getting focused when her father voice plunged in
“Mariane, come down for the dinner dear”
“Coming papa” responded Mariane
She again stared through the dark forest but the light was gone. She got downstairs, ate up her dinner, and then came back to her room to sort her things out as tomorrow was going to be her first day at school in Crystal valley.
The lights went out!
