I started walking through the crippled and wet path. I slipped twice along the path but kept on hiking. It was a steep pathway. Thin sunrays were touching my face through the heavy canopy of the trees. After hiking for at least an hour, I came across an isolated spot that seemed to be perfectly made or molded for wanderers like me. For a moment I felt like I have been hijacking someone’s rightful place but then the scenic beauty overcast my doubt. I stood at the cliff and caught a glimpse of the exhibited scenery. I could barely blink my eyes as they were detracted from the bushy surroundings. It was around 5 pm, the sun was almost setting, and the sky was blushing off and below it, the Crystal River owing its perfect name to the town with high tides and freshwater striking against the cliffs. It was a dream place to sit down and flush out all the feelings of a stranger like me while getting affiliated with probably the best place in town or at least that was one for me. I sat down, took out a can of mango juice, gulped in a sip, and then took out my diary to fill it a little with the utter beauty of the spot. I enjoyed the beautiful sunset while writing down my emotions.
It was almost 6:30 pm when I decided to head back home before my parents would know about my escape to the forest. I closed my diary and put it in my bag, gave a last glimpse of the beautiful sight and then started to walk down the forest. The sky felt covered with the blinking stars as the trees were blocking my sight. I was thinking of myself as the luckiest person on earth as if I were blessed with eternal happiness and bliss. Just when I was relishing my satisfaction, I heard approaching footsteps. I started to walk swiftly to outrun whatever was following me but the footsteps started hearing closer. I started to run as fast as I could to save my life. Fear was winning over me; it felt like the last day of my life. Suddenly my foot got stranded by lying and I fell. I felt my heart running low, I couldn’t decide whether my heartbeat was fast or slow as in both of the cases I was close to death. I got covered in dirt. Someone whispered from behind, “Maria isn’t it?”
I lost my nerves as it was evident that the previous event was not forgotten rather rested for the revenge. I turned my head and I could see the whole pack of ruthless wolves ready to feast upon me.
“You thought you would blow a slap on my face, my face and you will be allowed to let go this easy? No one has ever, ever tried to touch me against my will and you, a feeble little girl, how in the hell did you dare slap me huh?”
My lips were trembling; I wasn’t in any position to respond or even to apologize. Joe stood still while his friends pulled me up with the arms and made me stood in front of him. I couldn’t see him in the eyes but he forced me to look at him squeezing my cheeks with his hard hands. I could feel his breath upon my face. He came closer and whispered in my ear
“You have no idea what I’m going to do with you, Mariane, now I pronounced it right didn’t I?”
I started crying and begging them to let me go, tried to let him go of me and run away but the fact that I was a girl and alone made their joy double. They started pushing and throwing me to one another as I was a ball to play with. They were scolding me and all I was thinking at that moment was that I would never be able to see my parents again. I lost my strength and got ready to meet my wretched fate when a howl was heard.
Joe and his friends got terrified and seemed panicked and I was confused whether to fear these humane monsters or to fear a real wolf. After some seconds the howl kind of vanished and Joe turned back to me. He was about to strike me with rage when a white wolf plunged in from the cliff. I fell in terror and Joe and his friends got static as if they were standing dead with fear. The wolf howled in full rage again and acted to attack Joe and friends when they started to run in fear wherever they could till they got out of sight.
I was lying on the wet path when I mustered up the courage to look at the ferocious creature. It was standing right in front of me but it didn’t attack me rather I assumed from the situation that it saved me from the monsters. I was not in any condition to utter a word or make any sound; I just lied there looking at it, at first with fear and then with bewilderment. After some time, it vanished as if into the thin air. I got up and headed to my home as fast as I could, closed the doors, and got under my bed for as long as I could hear my parents came back home. At first, I thought I should tell them but then I didn’t because I was sure if I would I will never be able to revisit that pensive spot for the rest. I tried to act normal and asked my parents about their visit. Mama noticed a scratch on my hand that I got while falling but I managed to fit in some lies.
The next day in college I approached Mia and took her to the backside of the college to tell her the incident of the previous night.
“What happened? Why are you scared? Have you seen anything? Has anything hurt you? Tell me” Mia inquired of me
“Mia, I saw a wolf, a wolf in the forest” I whispered
“Okay and then” Mia responded in a normal tone
“Isn’t this something awkward and ferocious Mia? You don’t seem surprised?”
“Why should I Mariane, I already know about this don’t you?”
“What like there are wolves in the town, is this normal?” Mariane shrieked
“Of course, didn’t your parents tell you about this? Mariane wolves or should I say werewolves, do exist and especially in Crystal valley. I mean haven’t you noticed why everyone is so calm and protective here?”
“How is this even possible?” Mariane gasped
“It started long ago when a pack of werewolves cast over the valley and made a pact with the town people that they will protect the town but the town will have to provide them with permanent residence. Since then they are here and even they are here with us in college. People don’t mind getting along with them but they try to avoid us, humans, they prefer to stay in packs and haunt the forests” Mia explained
“I am just not getting along with this may be I will need a lot of time to get used to this fact”
“Oh, you will don’t worry. Now tell me how did that werewolf look like? Did you talk to him? What were you even doing in the forest? Didn’t you know that it is dangerous?”
“I don’t know maybe I was just trying to find a place to discover my isolated existence”
“Oh, Mariane tell me what was it like?”
“Well it was a white werewolf, it had bronze-green eyes and a rage that could both win a heart and make it stop at the same time, a long furry body and paws as strong as steel, the only thing that I remember is that I know it, I know him, I don’t know how but I am sure that I know him somehow, I could feel it” Mariane responded while lost in the incident
“You are truly lucky to have seen him this close and with such intimacy, I wonder when he meets you in his human form?”
“Will he?” Mariane asked promptly
“I don’t know silly girl, I’m just assuming and of course hoping” Mia chuckled
Just after college when I was standing waiting for papa to pick me, my eyes were caught by the sight of the boy that took my breath away the other day, again wandering off into the forest. I instantly called papa to not pick me up today, saying that I was off to Mia’s home and will come home after some time. I started to walk down the street to follow the mysterious guy and find out what he is up to.
“I need to know who he is!”
