An Unexpected Visit
Chapter One: An Unexpected Visit
Ava's eyes locked onto Julian's, the tension between them palpable. They stood in their luxurious living room, the sound of the ocean waves crashing outside a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing inside.
"I don't understand why you're being so hesitant, Ava," Julian said, his voice firm but laced with frustration. "We've been planning this wedding for months. Everything is already set in motion."
Ava took a deep breath, trying to articulate her doubts. "I know, Julian. It's just...I don't feel ready. I feel like we're rushing into this, and I'm not sure if it's what I truly want."
Julian's expression darkened, and he took a step closer to Ava. "What are you talking about, Ava? We've been together for years. We're meant to be together. This is just cold feet, that's all."
Ava tried to placate Julian, hoping to avoid further conflict. "I know, Julian. I'm sorry. It's just...I've been feeling a little overwhelmed with the wedding planning, that's all. I promise I'll try to get on board and make this work."
Just as Ava finished speaking, the doorbell rang. Julian's eyes flicked to the door, and he took a deep breath before composing himself.
"I'll get it," he said, striding towards the door.
Ava watched him go, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety. Who could it be? She hoped it wasn't one of Julian's business associates or, worse, his mother.
As she waited, Ava's mind started to wander back to the argument they just had. She couldn't shake the feeling that she'd just made a promise she couldn't keep.
The sound of voices and laughter came from the entrance hall, and Ava's curiosity got the better of her. She walked towards the door, her heart skipping a beat as she saw Julian standing aside, a look of annoyance on his face.
And then she saw him - Liam, her old friend from art school, standing in the doorway with a charming smile on his face.
Ava's eyes locked onto Liam's, and for a moment, she forgot all about Julian, the argument, and the wedding. All she could think about was the past, and the memories that came flooding back.
"What are you doing here?" Ava asked, trying to sound casual despite the turmoil brewing inside.
Liam's eyes crinkled at the corners as he smiled. "I was in the neighborhood and thought I'd drop by to say hello."
Julian's eyes narrowed slightly as he took in Liam's presence. "Can I help you?" he asked, his tone polite but cool.
Ava could sense the tension in the air, and she knew she had to do something to diffuse it. But what?
