Chapter 1: Rebirth and Divorce
The urgent wail of the ambulance's siren echoed through the city center streets. Emma Whitman lay inside, her consciousness fading as she listened to the voices of the paramedics. Her phone had been taken by a nurse, and she could hear the nurse making a call.
“Is this Ms. Whitman's husband? Your wife has been in an accident and is being taken to the hospital. Please...”
“Is she dead yet?”
The nurse's voice was cut off by the cold, indifferent tone of the man on the other end of the line.
The nurse hesitated, then replied, “Not yet.”
“I'm busy. Let me know when she's dead, and I'll come to collect the body.”
“Hello...”
The call ended with a click, leaving the nurse speechless and Emma surrounded by the deafening silence that mocked her for her misplaced affection. Even as her awareness slipped away, she heard Michael Blackwood's heartless words clearly.
She managed a bitter smile before closing her eyes. Some hearts, she realized, could never be warmed, no matter how much love she poured into them. Her hand fell limply to her side.
“The patient's heart has stopped...” came the announcement from the paramedics.
Emma awoke in her bed, staring in disbelief at her unscarred hands. Her skin was smooth, without any signs of injury. How was this possible? She had been in an accident and rushed to the hospital. How could she be here, unharmed?
A sudden thought struck her. She glanced at the clock on the wall. It read January 1, 2020.
Had she... been reborn?
As implausible as it seemed, it was the only explanation for why she was unhurt and back in her bedroom, with the clock showing a time from a year ago. Was this a second chance to make different choices?
Remembering Michael's cruel words before she died, Emma felt a surge of determination. She opened the bedside drawer, pulling out a document.
"Divorce Agreement" was emblazoned on the front in bold letters. Michael had sent his lawyer to deliver it yesterday.
In her past life, she had adamantly refused to sign it, clinging to her marriage with Michael Blackwood even as their relationship grew increasingly strained. For a whole year, Michael rarely came home, and even when he did, he barely spoke to her. She had been so desperate to stay by his side, believing that if she held on long enough, she would eventually win his heart.
But the accident had revealed the truth. Even on the brink of death, Michael had shown no concern for her, instead coldly awaiting her demise.
The familiar ache in her chest reminded Emma of how Michael had repeatedly broken her heart. She had clung to a love that only brought her pain, refusing to let go even when it was killing her.
With a resolute expression, Emma took the divorce agreement from the drawer and read through it carefully. Despite his lack of affection, Michael had been generous in the settlement, offering enough to ensure she would never want for anything.
After reviewing the document, she went to the study. When she emerged, she held a file folder. She called Michael’s lawyer.
“Mr. Harris, I’ve signed the divorce agreement and made a few amendments. Please review them with Michael. If he has no objections, we can finalize it.”
