Chapter One
Rayne I stood starring blankly at the coffee maker waiting for it finish brewing a pot so I  could deliver a cup to the gentleman at table 5 when i noticed a younger man had joined him. The younger man had a spirit with him who appeared desperate to be heard. So I quickly filled the coffee cup and went to see my new customer. “Here is your coffee sir, I see you now have a guest” I said with a pleasant soft voice. I then  looked to my new customer and said            “ There is a departed loved one traveling with you today that looks like he has a message he wants to relay to you” I continued before he had time to question or object. “He is a relative from your father’s side and says you are struggling with a decision right now and he doesn’t want to see you in this agony. He wants to follow your heart and not to be concerned with taking the same path he took. He wants you to make your own way and be happy and successful.”  The man teared up and looked at the gentleman who was sipping on his coffee. “Dad, Grandpa knows I am trying to decide which college scholarship to accept!” Then he looked to me and said “Could I ask him a question?”  “Sure” I replied. “Grandpa you were a professor at the same college you, your father and my Dad graduated from, are you saying you would not be disappointed if I broke tradition?”  I looked at the spirit looking down on his grandson, the pride he had for this boy was obvious even from the beyond the grave. I was almost in tears from seeing the love in this spirit’s eyes.  He looked back to me and said “There is nothing you could ever do to disappoint me. Follow your bliss and study hard. You will make a fine veterinarian.” I passed on the message and this young man with tears in his eyes jumped up and hugged me.  I was a little surprised but this sometimes happens when I pass messages to the living from the spirits of the dead. I eventually got their order and turned to take my ticket to the kitchen. My co-worker Penny was standing by the ticket wheel and said “it amazes me every time you do that! You child have a gift” I shrugged as I never thought of my being able to pass messages from spirits as a gift. It was just a talent I had that I loved to share.  I realized my talent as a medium when I was 7 years old. My Grandma came to visit me every day after we had went to the church and saw her laying in a big box. I was so excited to get to see her every day as she lived a long ways away so we didn’t get to get to visit as much as we would like. She explained to me she could visit anytime now being she was now living in heaven. Nobody believed me and had me seeing a psychiatrist as they thought I was suffering from hallucinations over the grief of losing my Grandma. Finally I was able to tell my Mom things only her mother could know before she started to believe me. Now 14 years later my Mom likes me to come out when her friends are over and give them messages from the dead. Grandma always comes to those gatherings to get a chance to tell stories on my Mom.  Some people find this creepy but most are fascinated or at least curious.  The end of my work day was nearing and my tired feet were grateful for this! Waitressing is great being you have money in your pocket daily but it was hard work! I would much rather prefer to make sculptures but they pay is not good for a starving artist hoping to be discovered. I suddenly heard Penny running towards the door screaming “we are closed- thank goodness for small favors.” A voice from the kitchen cheered “Praise the Lord my dogs are barking!” I work with a lot of single moms who are already exhausted when they show up at 2:00 to start their shift. They really enjoy blowing off some steam at quitting time for fun and to avoid taking stress home with them. They really enjoy hounding me about finding a man. They all tell me a 21 year old should be “getting all she can” while it is still fun. I have not really found anyone I would want to get it from just yet. When I was in High School I had a boyfriend who I just knew would be my husband then his Dad’s job transferred him from this little town in Indiana to a bigger town in Michigan. Broke my young heart to see him leave! I was only 16 when he moved away but I was just devastated. 5 years later a little piece of my heart is still is sad over losing Nate. We texted and emailed for a while then he found a girlfriend and kinda forgot about me. Finding a girlfriend was not something I ever dreamed he would do, but his gorgeous bright blue eyes could woo any poor girl in. His tanned skin, dishwater blond hair, toned body from swimming and smile could melt any heart, not just mine. Of course he was 16 the last time I saw him, now at 21 he probably looks like a Greek God.   Me however am not a Goddess in any way. My green eyes, brunette long hair, freckled face and many curves do not scream Goddess in my mind. But when Nate looked at me I always felt like a bombshell! I still dream about that last night we were together as it was nothing short of magical! But living in the past is not healthy I am told.
