Hey You

Katie kept quiet in the backseat while Roxanne continued to complain about going to strangers home, while I could honestly careless. I was always up for going out and meeting new people. The more boys, the better in my mind. 

As we pulled into Katie’s driveway she was finally able to convince Roxanne that nothing bad was going to happen tonight, and she agreed to go.

Katie’s house was a ranch style home sitting on about 2 acres of land. Looking at it from the outside, one wouldn’t think the owners were wealthy enough to go away for entire summers overseas. Her parents never flaunted their money; Katie did that enough for them. I parked my car right behind her older brother’s Jeep.  Walking into the house we could hear Seth, with his friends Chad, and John in the basement playing Halo.  

Katie’s phone let out a sharp ring the moment we entered the finished basement. “It’s him!!” She squealed grabbing it quickly and walking into a smaller room that was connected to the main area.

“I’ll only come if my two friends are with me,” She said into the phone, we couldn’t hear what he was saying. It was still early in the days of cellphones, and there was no speakerphone option. If you wanted to listen in on a conversation you had to stand really close to the headset. Katie was pacing though, so neither Roxanne nor I could listen in. As she continued to talk to him with yes, no, and short answers. Roxanne and I walked into the game room where Katie’s brother and his friends were. 

“Stupid asshole.” Chad said to John as we walked in.

“Hey, girls” Seth said as he glanced away from the TV.

“Hey” I said as I sat down next to John as Roxanne made herself comfy on an oversized bean bag. Chad offered Roxanne his drink for her to taste, but she shook her head. Turning towards me, “Stacey?” 

“What is it?” I asked as Seth gave him a dirty look, causing Chad to pull his hand back before I could take the cup.

Seth was nothing like his sister, he could care less about his looks, and didn’t have very many girlfriends. But, as for being an older brother, he made sure Katie stayed in contact with him and always told us he’d be there if we ever needed him.

I turned my head when I felt John eyeing me. We’ve known each other since I became friends with Katie. Hanging out together everything weekend and even going on family trips with them. He stood at 5’8”, with brown eyes and brown hair. I never expected to find him cute, because like Seth he was a gamer. They didn’t do sports, unless you considered playing hours of video games a sport. But throughout the last year, I’ve been catching him looking at me. Always there when I turn around, or just hanging back with me when Seth or Katie had to run out. I really started to enjoy his company, which is resulting in me catching feelings.

I gave him a quick smile, blush falling on my cheeks. 

“We’re leaving in an hour, bitches!” Katie stated as she walked into the room plopping down next to Seth, she grabbed his controller out of his hand the moment he died. I turned away from John as he gave me a questioning look, wanting to know what she was talking about.

“Where are you guys going?” Seth asked, a bit of concern laced in his voice when he saw that Roxanne made an eek face and I smiled wickedly raising my eyebrows.

“This guy Matt’s house, he’s having a party and invited us.” Katie stated

“But we just met him tonight, and now your sister is dragging us off to his house”. Roxanne quickly added.

Seth gave Katie a look and shook his head. “What happens if there’s danger Katie?”

“Well, we’ll call you Seth!” I said to him as I stood up and quickly ran up the stairs, letting them know that I was taking the first shower. 

Their house had an open floor plan at the kitchen, dining room, a half bath, and living area. A long hallway connected the other side of the house with 2 more full-size bathrooms and 3 bedrooms. 

I started to walk towards Katie’s bedroom when I heard the basement door close and someone whisper-yell my name.

Turning around I say John standing there with his empty cup in his hand. 

“I was hoping you guys were staying in tonight.” He said as I walked towards him.

I laughed, “Yeah, well you know Katie. She loves a party.” 

“Yeah” he replied, staring into my eyes intensely. 

“Did you need me for something?” I asked him. “I really need to shower before we go.”

“Oh,” John coughed clearing his throat, taking a small step towards me.

John stared me in the eyes as he started to lean down. 

Don’t move I thought to myself, Don’t even breath.

I stood there frozen as he continued to slowly bring his face closer to mine. 

Just as he was about to touch his lips with mine, I heard someone or many someones running up the basement stairs.

Scared we’d be caught, doing I have no idea since this was the first time he’s ever made any kind of advancements towards me. I quickly backed up. 

“I, um, I...need to...shower.” I stuttered out. He didn’t even kiss me, but the fact that I knew he was going to made me jumble my words. 

John just stood there with a sad expression as I saw everyone dispurs from the basement door. The boys going towards the kitchen, while Katie and Roxanne started down the hallway. 

I quickly walked into Katie’s room shutting the door behind me.
