CHAPTER ONE
Chapter One
Adelaide's POV
I woke up to the warm rays of sunlight peeking through the curtains of my luxurious bedroom. I stretched, feeling the softness of my bed, and smiled as I thought about the day ahead. As the heiress to my family's business empire, I had a lot on my plate, but I was ready for the challenge.
After getting dressed in a sleek business suit, I headed downstairs to the kitchen, where my personal assistant, Rachel, was waiting with a cup of steaming hot coffee.
"Good morning, Miss Adelaide," Rachel said, handing me the cup. "You have a busy day ahead, with a meeting at the company and then dinner with your friends."
I took a sip of the coffee, feeling the caffeine kick in. "Thanks, Rachel. I'm ready for it."
The meeting at the company was with a potential investor, Zane, who was interested in partnering with my family's business. I had done my research on Zane and was impressed with his business acumen, but I was also wary of his reputation for being ruthless in business deals.
As I arrived at the company, I was greeted by my father's assistant, who led me to the conference room where Zane was waiting.
Zane stood up as I entered, his piercing blue eyes locking onto mine. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I extended my hand.
"Mr. Hernandez, nice to meet you," I said, trying to sound confident.
Zane's handshake was firm, his smile charming. "Miss Martinez, the pleasure is all mine."
Avery's thoughts about Adelaide were that she was a force to be reckoned with. Adelaide was confident, intelligent, and beautiful. She had a way of commanding attention without even trying.
The meeting started off well, with Zane presenting his proposal and me listening intently. However, as the discussion progressed, I began to feel uneasy. Zane's proposal seemed to favor his own interests over mine, and I couldn't shake off the feeling that he was trying to take advantage of me.
"I'm afraid I don't agree with your terms, Mr. Hernandez," I said, trying to keep my tone neutral. "I think we need to renegotiate."
Zane's smile faltered, his eyes narrowing. "I'm afraid that's not possible, Miss Martinez. My terms are non-negotiable."
I felt a surge of frustration. I didn't like being pushed around, especially not by someone who seemed to be taking advantage of me.
"I'm afraid we're at an impasse, then," I said, standing up.
Zane's face darkened, his jaw clenched. "Fine. I'll leave."
As Zane stormed out of the conference room, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. I had stood up for myself, even if it meant losing a potential business deal.
Just as I was about to leave the conference room, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from my best friend, Sophia.
"Hey, Addie! I was thinking we could grab dinner tonight and catch up. It's been ages!"
I smiled, feeling a sense of excitement. I loved spending time with Sophia, and a night out with her friend was just what I needed to take my mind off the stressful meeting with Zane.
"I'd love to!" I replied, typing quickly on my phone. "What time were you thinking?"
As I finished my conversation with Sophia, I glanced at my watch and realized I had just enough time to prepare for our dinner date.
I headed back to my office, feeling a sense of anticipation.
After getting ready, I headed out to my car, a sleek black Bugatti. As I drove to the restaurant, I noticed broken lamp posts and blood stains. I figured something was wrong and quickened my pace, my heart racing.
Suddenly, I saw a figure stumbling out of an alleyway, blood pouring from his wounds.
My heart skipped a beat as I realized it was Zane.
Without hesitation, I pulled over and rushed to Zane's side. He looked up at me, his eyes filled with pain.
"Take me to the hospital," he whispered.
My medical training kicked in, and I quickly assessed Zane's wounds. I knew I had to get him to the hospital fast.
With a surge of adrenaline, I lifted Zane into my car and sped off to the hospital.
As I drove, I couldn't help but wonder what had happened to Zane. Who had shot him, and why?
As I arrived at the hospital, I quickly got Zane admitted and received treatment. I waited anxiously for news, my mind racing with questions.
Finally, the doctor came out and told me that Zane was stable, but he would need surgery.
I breathed a sigh of relief, feeling a sense of gratitude that I had been able to help Zane.
As I drove home, I couldn't shake off the feeling that my life had just taken a dramatic turn. I received a call from Sophia, who was annoyed that I had stood her up.
"Hey, girl, where are you?" Sophia asked, her tone tinged with annoyance. "I've been waiting for you at the restaurant for over an hour."
I winced, feeling guilty. "Sophia, I'm so sorry. Something unexpected came up."
"What could be more important than our dinner plans?" Sophia asked, her voice rising.
I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. "I'll tell you everything later, okay? Just know that it was an emergency."
Sophia sighed. "Fine. But you owe me, girl. Big time."
I laughed, feeling relieved. "I'll make it up to you, I promise."
After rescheduling our dinner plans, I arrived home. As I stepped into my mansion, the soft glow of the chandeliers cast a warm ambiance, but the silence was deafening. The stillness of the night seemed to swallow me whole, making me feel like I was the only person alive.
I made my way to the staircase, my heels clicking on the marble floor. The sound echoed through the empty hallway, emphasizing the solitude.
I reached my bedroom and pushed open the door, revealing a space that was both serene and luxurious. The soft, golden light of the bedside lamps cast a warm glow, illuminating the plush carpet and the elegant furniture.
I began my nightly routine, carefully removing my jewelry and placing it in the velvet-lined box on my dresser. As I changed into comfortable pajamas, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. The tension of the day, particularly the meeting with Zane, began to melt away.
As I brushed my teeth and washed my face, my mind wandered back to Zane. Our meeting had been tense, with both of us trying to assert their dominance. But despite the animosity, I had caught glimpses of a more vulnerable side of Zane.
I slipped into bed, feeling the softness of the sheets envelop me. As I settled into the pillows, I closed my eyes, letting the events of the day replay in my mind.
Zane's face appeared in my thoughts, his piercing blue eyes seeming to bore into my soul. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I remembered the way he had looked at me, with a mixture of curiosity and hostility.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't shake off the feeling that my life was about to change in ways I couldn't yet imagine.
