Chapter One
Hundreds of years ago, a war in heaven began between angels. Those who stood with God and His love for humankind and those who thought themselves better than humans. Those who thought themselves better than creation were banished out of heaven and into hell itself. Angel warriors were sent to earth to protect humankind against the banished angels who served hell. The warriors had babies with humans and were now known as Nephilim, angel half breeds, still very human, but their angel blood made them stronger, faster, and more beautiful. They were all part of a secret organization called The Halo. Situated around the world, they protected humankind against demons and mythical creatures roaming the earth. Ariel was born by angels, but angels are not supposed to fall in love, so she was kept a secret from the angels and the demons. Her father hid her on earth to grow up as a human. Only in human form, she still had angel abilities. Never needing anything, as her father made sure she had a comfortable life with a Halo warrior to always look after her and to train her. Much like Ariel but not quite as powerful. Rebecca has watched over Ariel since infancy and raised her to be a warrior. With the guidance of Ariel’s parents, Rebecca trained her to use her angelic powers to protect herself and to stay hidden from the demonic world. Like her parents, Ariel possessed a bit of a rebellious spirit and really did not like being told what to do. She followed the rules set out for her to stay safe and hidden from the outside world, but staying confined from human life and experiences was never part of her plan. She wanted a life of purpose and adventure. Rebecca constantly had to look for Ariel when she was a teenager. She’d snuck out of the house a few times to see what it was like to be a normal teenager. They lived on a big piece of land about a 20 minute drive outside New York City. Ariel POV: (Phone ringing) “Uhg, come on pick up.” Frustrated that I’ve been calling Rebecca for days now and still no answer. Rebecca had been gone for weeks now on some work mission or something and usually she would check in on me, but it’s been radio silence for days now. Did she forget it’s my birthday today? Rebecca was one of the best and most trusted warriors of The Halo. She worked for HQ in New York. We had plans for my 21st birthday to go out and celebrate, even if she couldn’t make it, she’d at least call to tell me, but she’s been gone for weeks, and I had no idea where. All I know is she’s supposed to be back by now. It was late in the afternoon, and I was pacing a ditch into the ground. “Calm down, Ariel.” I told myself. After a few more paces, I decided to ask my father for help. It’s something I don’t do very often. I don’t know what they did up in heaven, but I know they are extremely busy, and my father did not always answer me when I called out to him. We didn’t have a great relationship because we weren’t allowed to even have one, but he’s still my father and I looked to him for guidance in times of need. Now it could not work, as a phone call could. He appears to me and only me at times. He chose to show himself to me, but from my side I had to call out to him and only if he chose to, he could show himself to me and we could talk. He often appeared when I used to sneak out because he felt like I was putting myself in danger and maybe I did it on purpose just for the chance to see him. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, taking in my surroundings. The sun was warm on my face and there was a slight breeze in the air that touched my skin softly. “Uriel,” I whispered as I exhaled. I kept my eyes closed just waiting to hear his voice. After a long silence, I opened my eyes and, to my surprise, my father was standing a few feet from where I was, with a warm smile on his face. Angels are huge in size, but my father always appeared in human size when we talked. When our eyes met, I saw kindness in his face. My father is a beautiful angel, and you’d think he’d be old but in human age he looked like he was in his late twenties, but I knew he was thousands of years old. “Happy birthday little angel.” He reached out and touched my face. I closed my eyes and leaned into his hand. “Thanks dad, but you know I’m not that little anymore.” With a chuckle he replied, “That’s true, you’ve grown into a beautiful young woman, but you will always be my little angel.” We stood in silence for a moment, and I remembered why I had called him in the first place. “Dad, I have a favour to ask you. I need to know if Rebecca is alright. I haven’t seen her in a week and she’s not answering any of my texts.” I said with concern. His face changed to seriousness. “Last I heard she was out on a very important mission; you need not be concerned.” “But what if she’s in trouble? She’s never been gone for so long. What if something happened to her…...?” Panic flooded my face. “If something happened, I would know about it, so don’t worry about it, my angel.” He calmly said. For a second there was silence between us again and Uriel cupped my face. He must have seen the wheels turning in my head because his face turned dark with a frown. “Listen to me very carefully, you will not go looking for her, do you understand me?” I could see the seriousness in his eyes and my body responded out of obedience with a slow nod of my head, but everything inside me screamed that I had to do something. How am I not supposed to go out and look for her? She’s the only family I have on earth. Am I supposed to wait until she comes home? What if she is in trouble? What if she never comes home? There is no way I’m staying here like a sitting duck. “The world is a dangerous place. If the wrong people find out what you are and what you can do, they will hunt you and use you.” This he said with great concern. “I understand the dangers, please find her.” I almost whispered, looking down at my boots. He nodded and kissed me on my forehead. “I need to go now; I’ll see you soon.” And he was gone in a flashing light. I stood there for a hot minute just staring at the sunset. The weight of my next decision is pressing heavy on me now. Do I wait here for her to return, or do I go look for her? I ran back into the house to see if I could find something or anything to indicate where she could have gone to. Any clue to what her mission was about? I turned the house over and still could not find anything. Maybe if I went to The Halo, they would be able to give me some information on her whereabouts? I sigh heavily when I realize I don’t even know where The Halo is. I decided I would go to the city to all the places we used to go to. Maybe I’ll find something there. I took a shower to get my head in order, my heart was pounding against my chest. Why am I nervous? Is it the thrill of the mission? Or is it the fact that I’ll be on my own? Whatever it was, I didn’t like feeling like I had no control. My whole life I’ve trained to protect myself, but never have I ever had to do just that. I got dressed in black skinny jeans, a black tank top with a deep v that came between my breasts, black leather ankle boots and my white hair covered the entire length of my back. My leather jacket I tossed over my bag. I had a dainty gold necklace around my neck, 3 small golden ring earrings in both my ears. I took a deep breath, grabbed my car keys, and left the house. Before I got into my car, I turned around and took one last look at our house. I sighed loudly, “Here we go.” I said out loud and got into my car and drove off. It wasn’t long before I reached the city. There was something about the city that made me feel alive. I looked at the clock in my car and it was around nine in the evening. I walked down one of the streets and found myself in front of a night club. I’ve been here before with Rebecca. The light was bright and ice with loud music playing on the inside. The cue outside was long and I did not really intend to enter it, but the bouncer gave me a look like he’d never seen a woman before in his life. Starstruck, he gazed at me and stepped aside for me to enter. The music was pounding in my ears, the lights moving around, and the smell was a mixture of colognes that almost burned its way through my nose, making my eyes water. I moved through the crowd not trying to draw too much attention to myself, but I stood out like a sore thumb. My white hair and olive skin was kind of a dead give away and maybe it was the fact that I had neon blue eyes. There were so many bodies grinding and rubbing against each other it was hypnotizing. I scanned the room to see if I could maybe spot the guy Rebecca talked to when we were there last time. With no luck, I started moving through the crowd to go to the bar. Before I could reach the bar, a black leather jacket blocked my way. I softly pushed past him, but he turned around and I saw the most beautiful dark green eyes looking down at me, short black, and messy hair. His jawline was sharp, and he had full lips. I could see part of a tattoo on his neck, and quickly made eye contact again. I didn’t realize I was holding my breath. Like the bouncer, he looked at me like I was something new he’d never seen before. I had no idea what was going on inside his head, but I had to get out of there before my legs gave way beneath me. I tried to move past him, but he grabbed my wrist and instantly my eyes lit up in neon blue, like an angel’s halo. Oh s**t! This guy is a warrior. This had happened to me before, when someone of angel blood, like a warrior, touched me and my eyes turned neon blue. It happened every time Rebecca touched my skin. My first instinct was to shut my eyes so that he wouldn’t notice, but he did notice, and I heard him say, “Wow.” His voice was deep, almost like it was roaring through his chest. I got ready to sprint out of there before anyone else saw and I was exposed. I pulled my wrist out of his soft grip and tried to get out of there. I was looking for the alley door while pushing through a sea of people. I spotted the door and rushed to get to it. As I opened the door, there were 3 others on the outside. I stopped in my tracks and my back bumped into a hard chest. I turned around to see the guy with the green eyes behind me. We both stepped outside, and the door closed behind him. My heart started pounding in my ears as I prepared myself to fight. Never have I fought 4 people at the same time, but I was trained by the best, so I’d give it my all. I would avoid a fight as much as possible to stop the risk of anyone finding out what I am. I tried to look calm the entire time, my face bore no expression. The guy with the green eyes calmly asked, “Who are you?” Aware of all the eyes on me, I stood in silence. I was surrounded by two female warriors, one with black hair and the other with dark blonde hair and two male warriors, the one with green eyes and dark hair and the other with blue eyes and light blonde hair. They were all exceptionally attractive people with striking good looks. The guy with the blonde hair approached me with both his hands raised. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” I said confidently. Still, he launched himself at me, but I could anticipate his move. I readied myself in for a fighting stance and as he came closer, I straightened my arm and with my fist I hit him straight in the face and he fell over like a log. He looked confused, as though he did not anticipate me fighting back. He pushed himself up from his elbows and I could see he was not happy with me. If he was human, that blow would have been fatal, but I’ve fought Rebecca before and knew just how much power I could use. It was obvious I had bruised his ego, he looked like the type of guy who did not loose a lot of fights. The guy with the green eyes looked at me with total shock and then a bit of amusement peeked through his eyes. The blonde guy got up and was about to fight me again when the green-eyed guy spoke. “Ajax, that’s enough!” He had authority in his voice. I found it extremely attractive, and it sent shivers down my spine. I had a choice to make. I could fight them and escape, or I could surrender and let them take me to The Halo, where I was planning to go anyway. If they chose to take me alive. I raised both my hands, they looked at me confused. “What do you want us to do with her?” One of the female warriors asked. The green-eyed guy came closer and stood in front of me. I could feel the heat of his body, and I could smell his cologne, he was so close to me. It made me nervous, a feeling I wasn’t quite used to. “She’s coming with us.” He said, and one of the warriors tied my hands together behind my back with some sort of red material. As soon as she touched my skin, my eyes turned neon blue. Out of instinct, I turned my face to look away, but he softly stopped me and pushed my chin up with one finger. He stared into my eyes, it felt like he was staring into my soul. “What are you?” He softly whispered with a dark expression on his face. Still, I didn’t answer him. She pulled me away from him and walked out of the alley toward a black SUV. From the conversations that had started in the car I’ve learned a few things. His name is Caius, and he is their leader.
