Chapter Fourteen
Nicky’s point of view
The next day and a half went by pretty quick and before I knew it, it was nearly time to go and meet Missy. We had arranged to meet up by the reindeer huts. She was confused as to why I suggested meeting there, but that was part of the surprise.
I knew how to work the Reiners and I knew how to drive dads sleigh. He used to teach me when i was younger and give me the ‘’One day this will belong to you Nicky’’ speech. I used to take it out all the time with out any one knowing.
It has been a long time, but it's like riding a bike, you never forget.
I grabbed my jacket and headed out. I hadn’t seen any of the reiners in years. I missed them. God, I loved them. When I was younger, I used to come out every night to see them, give them carrots and say good night. It's not just a myth, Reiners LOVE carrots.
Their names how ever, ARE a myth. They aren’t called Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen. The originals were once upon a time, I think anyway, but the one's dad currently use are called Darren, Martin, Larry, Barry, Thomas, Paul, Dean and Duke. I know, because I named them myself.
...and Rudolf? There isn’t a Rudolf. Never, ever has been. Complete and utter urban legend.
When I was little, I remember one year, it was completely unreal, All of the reiners had twins. Dad said it was magical, it had never happened in the whole history of the pole before. I fell in love with all of them. Their parents continued to be sleigh runners, and I would play with the babies every chance I got. I did until the day I left for New York.
They were basically like my pets, I really missed them. Tonight was my first time seeing them since I said good bye. I wonder if they remembered me?
By the time I snapped out of my thoughts, I was at the hut. I wanted to wait for Missy, but, I really wanted to go and see all the Reiners too.
Oh, f**k it!
I unlocked the hut and headed inside. Every thing was exactly the way it was the last time I was in here. Nothing had changed. Smiling as I looked around the room, I walked down the corridor and peered in to the first stall I saw, Larry and Barry. They weren’t paying any attention to me, I carried on walking, Darren and Martin. As usual, fast asleep. They always were sleepy heads. Next, Thomas and Paul, Sleeping too, and lastly, My boys, My favourites, Dean and Duke. I whistled to them, and instantly, their ears pricked.
‘How are my boys doing, Did you miss me?’ They came over to the gate, and I opened it up. The second they got a clear shot, they ran over to me and knocked me to the floor. I couldn’t stop laughing. Their wet, warm noses tickled. I felt bad about the others and managed to get up. I ran down to the other stalls and let the boys out.
Their reactions were the same as Dean and Duke. These boys loved me and I truly loved them. I flipped back and forth between all of them, giving them head rubs and nose touches, Telling them all how much I missed them.
‘Awww, You all look adorable!’ I froze and looked up. Missy was stood in the door way, Hands on her hips, smiling like a Cheshire cat. I jumped to my feet and brushed myself down, but the second I moved my hands, the boys started nudging me for more cuddles.
‘I uh.. Lost track of time, I’m sorry’. She just shook her head.
‘Don’t be. It wasn’t sarcasm, you really did look adorable with them’. My smile grew.
‘Yeah well, they are my boys. I grew up with them, Named them… I loved them.’ She stepped forward and held her hand out, Larry and Barry walked over to her and let her love them up. ‘Seems like they like you too’.
‘Well, that's good, right? Your boys like me, means I have a better shot with you?’ I raised my eyebrows.
‘Hmm, Is that your plan?’ She shrugged. I chuckled. ‘Right then, Come on, let's get out of here’. She pouted.
‘Aww, I don’t want to leave them, look how cute they are!’.
‘Who says they aren’t coming with us?’ That got her interest. I nodded towards the back of the hut where the sleigh was, Grabbing the reins on my way past, once she realised I was being serious, she ran after me.
She has no idea what I have planned!
