Destiny's POV
I pursed my lips as I allowed my eyes roam over the crowd in front of me. The low din of music reached my ears, and even though the tune was rhythmic, it just wasn't enough to take my mind off of things.
A sigh slid past my lips as I smoothed the invisible creases on my dress. I'd lost the number of times I'd done this tonight, but I was out of options. I was anxious as hell and this was the only hope of calming myself down.
My heart thundered in my chest as I caught a glimpse of everything and nothing all at once. People of different caliber miled about, some of them chatting animatedly in groups while the others stood out in corners, probably judging each other through the eye holes of their masks.
It was a masked party apparently, and even though I had spent almost an hour in the midst of all these people, I still didn't feel comfortable. When Fredrick had mentioned the party yesterday, I didn't see it as anything. I honestly thought he didn't mean it. Well, not until this evening.
Fiona had barged into my room and tossed a black dress on my bed.
“It's for tonight.” She'd quipped. “Make sure you look presentable and don't be late.”
Like a little puppy, I did as I was told and dressed up when it was time. But now, as I stood in the midst of all these people with the black dress hugging my curves, my red hair a sharp contrast to the green of my eyes and a little bit of cleavage slipping out of my dress, I still had no idea what I was doing here.
The only comfort I had, was the red and golden mask that concealed my face. Something caught my eye, pulling out of my thoughts immediately. Unfortunately, it was gone just before I could make anything out of it. But the moment I lost whatever it was, something else caught my attention.
A cake. A cake as huge as the heaven came into view. I hadn't thought about it before, but now it brought me to one conclusion; whoever this party was being thrown for, was definitely super important.
“Good evening all.” Someone croaked over the mic, catching the attention of everyone in the room. I turned to the stage, just to find a man standing over a raised platform. “It is with great joy that I welcome you all here tonight. As we all know, it's a special occasion, but there's no way we can deem it special without the man of the hour himself, so join me in welcoming; The Alpha!”
Loud cheers erupted and I pressed my hands to my ears, an attempt to prevent myself from going deaf. The cheers died down momentarily, as everyone slowly bowed their head. It took me a while, but only when he'd walked past me did I realize. It was him, the Alpha.
Tingles spread through my body as he walked past. For some strange reason, I couldn't tear my eyes away from him. I watched as he took each and every step to the platform. Only when he'd gotten there, did I really take him in. Brown hair sleeked all the way to the back sat on his head. His blue eyes twinkled despite being hidden behind the black and golden mask he wore.
A body resembling that of a mini god modeled his navy blue and gold ensemble, bathing him in nothing but royalty. The stage was at a distance from me, but his aura was so thick, it radiated around me. His body thrummed with so much power, it was intoxicating.
“Thank you all for honoring my invitation.” His voice was like a group of angels performing a symphony. “It warms my heart and as your Alpha, I order you all to have fun!”
A ripple of laughter burst through the crowd, before the music picked up its pace again. At that same moment, a waiter whizzed by me and without thinking, I plucked a glass from him.
Maybe if I had foreseen what would happen next, I wouldn't have done what I did. The moment I pressed the glass to my lips and a small portion of the wine slid down my throat, I regretted it immediately. My ears buzzed and I pressed my eyes shut, a feeble attempt at reducing the pain that spread through my skull.
I let our muffled groans as I tried to reel it in. I hadn't set my eyes on Fredrick's men since I got here, but I knew they were lurking around and I knew the last thing they wanted was for me to cause a scene.
Even though they hadn't spelt it out to me, I knew they were up to something, something I wasn't actually aware of.
I somehow managed to peel my eyes open even with the unbearable pain, and the moment I did so, something unimaginable happened. Confusion coursed through my veins as I locked eyes with the last person I'd expected.
Blue eyes stared at me through his black and gold mask. I would have registered our eyes locking as nothing more than a coincidence, but the moment I watched something flash in his eyes, a voice rang out in my head.
Kai. The voice whispered. His name is Kai.
“Kai?” I'd barely mouthed the word before something else happened. Almost like he'd read my lips or my mind, his eyes bulged, each one equivalent to the size of saucers. “Kai?”
I let out a loud shriek as the pain in my head intensified. Black and white flashed in my mind, sending me into a fluffy of confusion. I felt my heartbeat shoot to the roof as my glass slipped through my fingers before landing on the ground with a loud crash.
“What the hell is going on?” I still couldn't see, but with the different scent of perfumes that wafted into my nose, I knew I'd been surrounded. I fell to my knees as the pain intensified, searing through each and every part of my skull. Read hot heat coursed through my veins, multiplying the pain to a degree I never knew was possible.
“What the-?” I mumbled with tears in my eyes. I had barely gotten other words out, when rough hands grabbed me by the arms.
“What is going on here?” Someone barked in my ear. I had no idea who it was,but panic nipped at my skin when I realized I couldn't put a face to the voice. “How dare you cause a nuisance at the alpha's party?”
“I..” I whispered, as the pain slowly dulled into a light throb. “ I really didn't…”
“Silence.” He yelled and I flinched. I opened my eyes at his Loud tone and I felt my heart drop to my feet immediately. It was a guard, and not one of Fredrick's guards this time. “You’re under arrest.”
“But, but…’ I stuttered, clearly at a loss of words.
How could I be arrested. That's not even possible….
The rest of my thoughts died in my head as rough hands grabbed a hold of me. In the blink of an eye, I found myself being escorted away from the main party and towards a door up ahead.
Oh goddess, please help me.
“Stop.” Someone yelled, causing us to halt in our tracks. I had no idea who it was, and it didn't help that I couldn't recognize his voice either. “Not another step.”
Who the hell was that now?
