Five Years Later.
Destiny's POV
I sucked in a large mouthful of air as I suddenly jerked awake. My eyes popped open a couple of minutes later, but all it took was one second to shut them back again. They stung. Really badly.
I pressed my eyes shut, hoping the little gesture would stop the tears from streaming down my cheeks. It worked, but I had to sit through the seating pain first. I took a couple more mouthfuls of air before peeling my eyes open again. This time, I raised my eyelids as slowly as I could , until they were all the way up.
I blinked back a couple of times, willing the blurry vision I got to go away. All it took was approximately six blinks for me to get a clear view of the sight in front of me.
It was dark, pitch dark, save for the gentle glow from the moon. A couple of stars twinkled in the night, but it didn't help to illuminate much, or shed light on what exactly was happening.
I allowed my eyes the luxury of roaming around. Trees and grasses swayed around me, almost like they were dancing to a beat only they could hear. A soft wind rustled in the distance, causing goosebumps to crawl across my skin.
Wait
Wasn't I dead? So how could I feel goosebumps on my skin?
Instinctively, I found my eyes darting towards my arm. There was something off about it, but I just couldn't figure it out yet. Slowly, I raised my hand and headed closer and closer to my arm.
“s**t!” I screamed as an intense jolt of pain shot up my arm. Id just pinched myself and I felt it. I thought ghosts couldn't feel anything?
None of this was making sense. How could I feel anything after so long?
An unpleasant memory made it's way to my mind and I frowned. Over the years, I'd tried my best to suppress it, but it always showed up at the worst of times. Like now.
I shut my eyes tight, willing my memory to do the right thing, but it didn't. It never did, even in the past years I spent in the afterlife, nothing changed.
One would think since I was a ghost, I would at least have a glimpse of how and why I'd died, but I was blank. And now, even after reincarnating somehow, I still had no memory of anything. Anything at all.
After my death, I literally watched my body from my soul and I remembered nothing. I didn't even have a good glimpse of what it looked like. If I were to come across my old body again, believe me when I said I would walk right past it. All I experienced was wandering about in a dark enclosed space. I'd always heard of the afterlife, but I never truly believed in it until I got to experience it. And there, I was just like a ghost, unfeeling and half alive.
So how, was I suddenly able to pinch myself and feel it too. ?
“No.” My eyes went wide as an idea struck in my head. No, there was no way. It just wasn't possible.
Immediately, I scrambled to my feet and headed in the opposite direction. I had no idea where I was headed, but I knew I would know the moment I found it. I wobbled on my two left feet as I cut through the tall trees and branches that threatened to cut off my legs and gorge my eyes out. I was out of balance, but I forged ahead, until I came across a huge lake in the middle of nowhere.
My heart thumped against my chest as I slowly walked towards it. I crouched and the moment I peeked into the crystal clear surface of the lake, I jumped back in shock.
No. It just couldn't be.
I peered back into the lake just to realize I wasn't me. My blonde locs had been swapped for fiery red hair. My brows were trimmed and arched with the most perfect pair of emerald eyes Id ever stumbled upon.
“No.” Fear raked through my body at the possibility of it all. What had happened to my face? Where had my blonde hair gone? What the hell was happening?!
Slowly, I got on my feet and walked closer to the lake. Just like I'd suspected, my face wasn't the only thing that had gone through a transformation. My body wasn't left out too.
My porcelain skin shone in the reflection of the lake. I had curves, more curves than in my former body.
Former body? What the hell was happening to me. How was i able to come back to life after roaming around in the after world for only the goddess knows how long? Like that wasn't surprising enough, I'd come back in another body.
During my childhood, I'd been told a lot of reincarnation stories. They were so many, I started losing count. What I never imagined, was me experiencing it. But why? According to the stories, people only reincarnated when they had unfinished business on earth or when they'd been wronged and wanted to take revenge.
Revenge?
Why would I want revenge? Who could have offended me so badly that I had to come back?
I let out a loud groan as I pressed my eyes shut again, muttering a prayer to the moon goddess.
If she could allow me to come back in a new body for some strange reason, then surely bringing back my memory wouldn't be too much of a hassle for her, right?
Seconds ticked into more seconds as I anxiously waited for an answer. It could be anything; a clue in the bushes or even a whisper in my ear. I would take anything, anything at this point.
Disappointment raked through my body when I realized I wasn't going to get an answer. Not even one, or even the tiniest clue.
“What is wrong with me?” I muttered to no one in particular. The cool breeze did a good job in blowing the rest of my thoughts away, making it look as though I hadn't uttered a word. “What exactly is….”
“Destiny.” a voice whispered in my head. It was so tiny I'd barely heard it. Goosebumps lined the surface of my skin, a confirmation that I wasn't hallucinating or hearing things. “Your name is Destiny.”
Just as it came, the voice didn't take too long to disappear again, leaving me in more confusion than I originally was.
Who was Destiny? Could it really be me? How could I be so sure that I wasn't being pranked?...
The sound of rustling, cut through my thoughts. Immediately, I spun towards the direction it came from, but the moment I caught a whiff of what was coming at me, I didn't think it was such a good idea anymore.
Heavy footsteps accompanied with loud noises drew closer and closer. My heart thumped and ears buzzed as I figured out what to do. Before I could react, someone jumped out of the bushes in front of me.
A loud scream slid past my lips as a man appeared before me. A mask shielded his face, showing nothing but his physique. He was lean and muscular and before I had anymore time to take him in, something glinted underneath the moonlight. It was dagger, a very sharp one.
“Wait!” His words landed on deaf ears as I spun on my heels immediately. Without thinking, I jumped into the lake I once had my back towards. I knew it was a foolish thing to do,but the moon goddess must have been on my side because the moment I tumbled into the mass of water, I realized it wasn't that deep.
Splashes reached my ears again, reminding me that I didn't have any time to waste, so I pushed forward. As fast as my new body could push me, I trudged and trudged on,not minding the numerous gashes the branches tore into my skin.
Maybe if I wasn't so focused on the danger behind me, I would have been able to avoid the one just in front of me. It happened so quick I didn't even realize it. One minute I was on my feet, and the next I was covered in mud with a twisted ankle.
Great. Just great
Like I hadn't gotten into enough trouble, the footsteps receded just to reveal the man from before. In one swift motion I watched as he pulled off his mask. Before I could get the opportunity to take in his handsome features, he growled .” Who are you?”
“I.. I…” I stammered .I had no idea what I was supposed to say. I was no longer Destiny. Destiny was dead and gone. So who was I ?
“You're a werewolf aren't you?” He continued on my hesitation. There was a hint to his tone and my stomach churned at the thought that it didn't mean anything good. “ And do you know what we do to werewolves?”
In a tone more menacing than the last, he added. “We kill them.”
The glint of the dagger caught my eye once again as he raised it to his full length. My eyes widened in shock as I realized what he was about to do.
“Wait!” I screamed and he stopped. I wasn't a werewolf, but I was going to take my new found chance to take my revenge on them for hurting and deceiving me. “ I'm not a werewolf, but I can help you hunt them down.”
