Destiny's POV
My heart thundered wildly in my chest, and no matter how many times I'd inhaled and exhaled, my heartbeat refused to go back to its normal pace. If anything, the more I tried, the worse it became. I pressed my eyes shut as beads of sweat formed on my forehead. My body burned from the inside out and I could feel my insides flaring up, the heat rising at least every minute.
One would think I was running a fever, but I was completely fine. All of these were none other than symptoms of fear. I was scared, why?
Because he was coming.
That's right, baby. Her voice echoed. The same night my dad is coming to kill you.
Even after she'd disappeared from my cell the other day, I couldn't bring myself to stop thinking about it, talk more of eating the food she'd brought for me.
I scrunched up my nose in disgust as a foul stench hit me square in the nose, cutting me out of my monologue. From the smell, I already knew what it was: the dinner that girl had brought for me two days ago. I couldn't bring myself to touch it after her departure. How could I? There was no way I could stomach its contents, not when she'd informed me of my fate.
From that moment up until now, I'd been praying for a miracle, even the tiniest one. But as time passed, realization dawned on me. I was really going to get killed in the next two days.
The stories filtering in through the stone walls didn't help either. Apparently, the man who'd found me in the woods the day I was reborn, was Fredrick Locke, the leader of the Black ops pack. He was as ferocious as they came and merciless too. No one survived his wrath whenever he promised to rain terror on you, and it broke my heart when I realized I wasn't going to be part of the lucky one percent that would make it out alive.
I let a tear slip from the corner of my eyes. My throat was parched and my eyes were swollen. Apparently, weeping did nothing to soften a man's heart, not a man like Fredrick anyway. A light breeze blew by, sending goosebumps down my skin. I shivered and in that moment, I found my gaze catching the attention of something..
Just high up on the dirty and stony wall was a small window, no bigger than the size of a show box. It was pretty ordinary, but that wasn't what had caused my attention; it was the world beyond it.
Anxiety nipped at my skin as the moon came into view. In a couple of hours it would be full and then I would finally embrace my fate; death.
Getting through the last two days had been torture, but nothing could compare to this. Knowing that your life would come to an end in just a few hours and there was literally nothing you could do to stop it.
“Dinner!” The sound of the iron bars sliding open brought me back to reality. Disappointment thrummed in my veins when I realized it wasn't Fredrick's daughter, but a guard instead. With the ensemble he was donning, one could easily tell. A dark as night uniform which consisted of a dark shirt and an even darker pair of pants hugged his lower body. Pitch black shoes kissed the dry floors of the cell as he walked closer and closer.
A part of me had hoped to beg for her assistance if she happened to drop by again. Since she believed me unlike her dad, then she would be willing to help me.
I'd hoped.
“You poor thing.” The guard smirked as he dropped to his knees in a crouching position. His smile never faltered as he dropped the usual tray in front of me. “Eat up.”
My eyes darted from the man in front of me to the tray and back to the man again. Was he that heartless? It was no longer news that Fredrick would be coming to end my life in a few hours, and he wanted me to eat up? How inhumane could this actually get?
“Please.” I croaked. I had no idea why I was pleading, but I was all out of options at this point. “Please, help me.”
“Look.” He sighed, putting on an extremely difficult demeanor entirely. I watched in surprise as his steely face morphed into one with a little bit of compassion etched on his features. “I can't. No one goes against Fredrick. No one.”
I felt my heart crumble into a million pieces all at once. This was it. There wasn't even so much as a single piece of hope for me….
“But there's one thing I can do for you.” My ears perked up at the sound of the guard's voice again. “This. At least, you get to enjoy a little bit of freedom before the inevitable.”
My eyes bulged as he pulled out a set of keys from his pocket, and before I could register anything else, he popped open the chains binding my hands and legs.
“Enjoy.” He was on his feet immediately. “Hopefully, when he comes, he'll be too mad to realize that you're no longer chained.
Without so much as another word, he stalked out of the cell, his footsteps receding in the distance. I stared at my hands and legs. Red skin stared back at me and I knew it wouldn't too long before it started bruising, but that wasn't even the surprising part.
What shocked me was how I was abe to pull what I just did without the guard realizing anything.
Just tucked underneath my hands, was a key, a key I'd somehow managed to slip from the guard's pocket while he bent and was unlocking the chains wrapped around my hands and legs.
My body thrummed as I did a quick check of my surroundings. He'd been gone for quite some time now, I could bet my life he hadn't realized the key was missing, which meant only one thing, I needed to do what I had to do, fast.
I got on my feet immediately, just to be knocked square in the jaw by a wave of dizzy spells. My knees wobbled and buckled, and I found myself holding on to the the wall for balance. The aroma of the meal wafted into my nose and my stomach churned. New body or old, one couldn't exactly function without food, right?
I felt my mouth water as I stared at the platter in front of me. Tonight's meal was unlike the others. It was rich in protein and
I gasped as a thought popped into my head. What if it had been poisoned? Was that why the guard let me loose from my chains? He was only making things easier for Fredrick and here I was thinking he actually had a heart.
That bastard.
I shook my head again, steeling my resolve. After a couple of mouthfuls of air, I was ready to go. I tiptoed to the iron bars that held me captive. As I inserted the key into its keyhole, I muttered a quick prayer to the moon goddess.
Please, don't let me die again.
A small click brought me back to reality. A huge grin broke out on my face when I realized what had just happened. The key worked.
I paused the small victory dance I was about to do and gently slid the iron bars open. My heart picked up its pace as I stole a cursory look at my surroundings. The faint laughter of guards filled the tiny hallway. There were currently two paths for me to choose from, the left or right.
Without giving it too much thought, I headed away from the direction where the guards laughter could be heard from. With each step I took, I felt my heart drop to my feet. Beads of sweat lined my forehead, but I pressed on. I didn't even have the faintest idea of where I was going, but
I couldn't stop now.
A small grin made its way to my face when I spotted something up ahead, It was a door. But the moment I got closer, it faltered. It was locked, with a huge padlock too.
My mind whirled with a million and one emotions. I couldn't back down now, not when I was already so close. I searched around frantically. I had no idea what I was looking for, but I knew I would know when I found it. So it was no surprise, when my gaze landed on a huge rock just tucked into the corner. I knew what I was meant to do.
I flinched as a loud bang filled the room the moment the rock came in contact with the padlock. I knew the guards would have heard it by now, so I kept on banging, until the padlock fell apart totally.
A cold gush of wind rushed at me the moment I stepped out through the door. My fear heightened as I got a glimpse of the moon; it was already full and it translated into one thing.
I was running out of time.
As fast as my legs could carry me, I ran. I ran and ran without looking back. I knew it was only a matter of time before they would realize I was gone and come looking for me. Only a matter of time before he…
A loud howl filled the air, sending goosebumps down my spine. Sweat trickled down my forehead, as it seeped into my clothes. I pushed myself forward, pressing my feet and heels against the ground.
Fredrick was supposed to kill me and now that I'd escaped, heaven only knows what he would do to me. I could bet he would torture the hell out of me before throwing me into the cold hands of death. He would…
The rest of my thoughts dried up in my mind as something caught my ears. Footsteps reverberated around me, each one dangerously close.
“Get back here!” Fredrick growled behind me. “Get back here!”
I tuned him out as I continued running. Jolts of pain shot up my legs but I ignored it as best as I could. How was I supposed to find the woman his daughter spoke about if Fredrick was hell bent on killing me?
I needed a new plan, if I kept on running, then it would only be a matter of time before he caught up to me. An idea popped into my head as I sighted a nearby forest. If I could get lost in one of those trees, then there was no way he would be able to find me.
If only I'd known how wrong I was, maybe I wouldn't have ventured in there. I'd barely stepped foot into the forest when something caught my feet, causing me to stumble. With a loud groan, I fell face flat to the ground, my elbows and joints kissing the rough hard ground.
I'd barely had enough time to nurse my wounds when someone appeared in front of me.
“I promise to make your death slow and painful.” Fredrick's face held nothing but rage and fury. I watched as he protruded a dagger. “You'll serve as a warning to whoever sent you and …”
“Let her go.” Someone's voice boomed around us, causing both of us to freeze in our tracks.“Now!”
Who the hell was that?”
