Her ex, Clayton, a motorcycle biker and possessive man, has returned and is furious. Having fled from Clayton and changed her identity to escape his abuse, Emma wants to keep the police out of the situation. Jake and his best friend Paul hire bodyguards to follow Emma to the location for the exchange. The exchange is successful, but Jake is not satisfied as he wants his wife back. Clayton attempts to run away with Emma, but they are stopped by the police, whom Jake called once Millie was safe.Emma finally reveals her past to Jake, who does not hold it against her. They consummate their marriage, and Jake confesses his feelings for Emma. When he asks for time to consider his confession, things take a turn for the worse. Elena, jealous of Jake's happiness, comes home to pick Millie up, newly dressed under a trench coat. Emma walks in on Jake trying to push a naked Elena out of the room and is disturbed by the sight. Feeling hurt, she excuses herself and leaves. On the day of the judgment concerning the custody case, Jake’s lawyer surprises the court with last-minute footage of Elena having s*x with her lawyer in his office with high on cocaine.Ultimately, Jake wins the case and prepares to face the press. Emma returns home to pack her things; she has sold her business to her partner and signed the divorce papers, which she leaves on the table as she turns to leave, only to run into Jake.Jake tells Emma that he has no feelings left for Elena and that nothing happened between them. Chapter 1: The Dressing Room
The metallic tang of sweat and antiseptic hung heavy in the air, a suffocating blanket draped over the hockey team's dressing room. Harsh fluorescent lights buzzed, casting a sterile glow on the scene of hurried disrobing. Jake, a sculpted Adonis of a man with the ice-blue eyes of a predator, wrestled with his jersey, the muscles in his back flexing beneath the fabric. Around him, teammates mumbled and grunted, their voices muffled by the rhythmic thump of changing bodies. Emma, a whirlwind of fiery energy, burst through the door, her presence jarring the quiet chaos. Her tailored suit, usually a symbol of polished professionalism, now looked like a defiant battle flag against the stark white walls. She slammed a folder onto the cluttered table, its contents scattering onto the worn linoleum floor. Jake froze, his hand hovering inches from his jeans. He glanced around, surprised. "Emma?" He asked, his voice a low rumble, laced with a hint of bewilderment. His teammates, mid-undress, paused, their eyes darting between Emma and him, their whispers turning to murmurs. "Jake," Emma’s voice was a controlled fury, "You lied to me." His blue eyes narrowed. "I—" He started, but she cut him off. "You lied about *everything*." The air thickened, the scent of chlorine mingling with the pungent aroma of fear. "What are you talking about, Emma?" he asked, his voice betraying a flicker of nervousness. Emma shoved a piece of paper across the cluttered table toward him, her knuckles white. "This is your ‘relationship’ documentation, your ‘request’ to your friend. Lies. All lies." Jake’s eyes darted to the paper, his face paling. The document detailed Emma's services, her background checks and her role as a matchmaker. He felt a cold dread crawl up his spine, a shiver that was not just from the air conditioning. "It's not what it looks like," he muttered, his voice barely audible above the murmur of the room. "Oh, really?" Emma retorted, her voice a razor. "Because it looks like you're embroiled in a custody battle, your ex-wife has a vendetta against you, and you're trying to use me as a pawn in a game of cat and mouse. You asked me to find you a wife because you need a clean slate. You're attempting to use my credibility to get out of the mess you've created. This is all to start a new chapter in your life, isn't it?" He looked down at his hands, the knuckles pale against his tanned skin. "It's complicated," he finally admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "Complicated? Or calculated?" Emma countered, her eyes blazing. "You've constructed a carefully crafted facade, a perfect image of the hockey star. But beneath it all, I see a man desperately trying to manipulate his way out of trouble." He took a step toward her, his eyes reflecting the cold fluorescent lights. "You're making assumptions," he said, his voice catching in his throat. "I'm not—" "Don't try to play innocent with me," Emma interrupted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I've seen through your charade. This 'custody battle' wasn't some casual discussion with your friend, was it? You knew exactly what you were doing, didn't you?" The room went deathly silent. Every pair of eyes locked on the escalating argument. Jake's teammates, usually boisterous, were now frozen, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and fear. "Guys, would you please excuse Ms Middleton and I?" Jake asked his teammates and soon, they all filled out, mostly dressed. "You lied," she spat, her voice a low, controlled tremor. "All of it." Jake's heart hammered against his ribs. He'd meticulously constructed a facade, a carefully crafted persona for this matchmaker. He hadn't expected her to see through it. He tried to keep his composure. "Emma, please," he began, his voice barely a whisper. But Emma wasn't listening. She was already storming towards him, her face flushed, a storm brewing. "You told me you were just an almost retired athlete, looking for a stable life," her voice rose. "That you needed help finding someone who understood your lifestyle and passions." Jake shifted uneasily, his teammates' stares drilling into him. "It wasn't a lie," he said, his voice rising. "It was…a simplification." "A simplification that involved the destruction of my trust!" she snapped, her voice echoing off the polished surfaces of the lockers. She thrust a crumpled piece of paper into his chest. "A custody battle? That's what I discovered this morning. How dare you." "Let's just say," Jake said, his voice laced with a threatening edge, "that a little truth-telling can be incredibly inconvenient." His words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken threats. Emma's face remained impassive, a mask of steel. "Inconvenient? Or dangerous?" she challenged. "There is a delicate balance here," Jake countered, his voice a low rumble, "and I don't want to upset it." Emma scoffed. "You want to upset my credibility? You want to ruin my business? What will you do, Jake? You'll use your influence? Threaten me? The hockey world is your playground. Your manipulation is getting very dangerous, Jake." "Emma," he said, his voice softer now, "this is not what you think it is. This is just a request. I wanted you to help me get to know a woman, a potential wife. I needed you." "And now you've got me in this mess, wanting me to be a silent partner in your escapades. I'm not afraid of you, Jake," she spat, "but I will not be the one to get involved. I am not your pawn!" A subtle movement caught Emma's eye. A flash of something—a glint of metal, a flicker of movement—from the far side of the dressing room. She glanced back, her gaze lingering on a shadowed corner. Was it her imagination, or had something… *moved*? "I’m going to leave now," Emma stated, her voice laced with a new sense of urgency. "No, wait," Jake said, stepping forward, his eyes narrowed. "There's something you need to see." He grabbed the his phone from the table and began to scrolling through it, his movements swift and precise. His eyes scanned the phone, a glint of determination burning in their depths. But just as he reached for something inside, a sharp metallic clang echoed from the doorway. The lights flickered, plunging the dressing room into near darkness. A figure emerged from the shadows, its silhouette blurred by the brief illumination. Someone was there… A figure appeared. It was tall and dark, standing menacingly at the doorway, blocking any escape. The figure was shrouded in shadow, its face hidden. The intruder raised a hand, the glint of metal caught in the failing light before extinguishing. The sound of a click cut through the near darkness, followed by an impossibly silent movement. Emma found herself trapped, cornered, with the man she accused before her, and a masked threat standing silently in the doorway, holding something sharp, and ready to strike.
