I awoke at about nine am to Jeanne screaming “The caterer from Bangor said they are overbooked and cannot do the wedding.” Jeanne was just sobbing when I came downstairs.
“Give me the number to the caterer in Bangor?” I told Jeanne.
“What are you going to do about it?” Jeanne sobbed “My wedding is ruined.”
“Give me the damn number Jeanne.” I snapped. “Give me five minutes.”
I called Harper. I knew if anything Grandpa Harper could help me or at least his lawyers could.
“Good Morning Grandpa,” I said in my sweetest voice.
“Mikey, how’s Maine?” Harper asked.
“It was good till, well Grandpa I need your help?” I said as I started my fake crying.
“Mikey, what’s wrong? What do you need? Anything you name it.” Harper said.
“Well, I need you or your lawyer’s to call this catering company. See they think that Davis is some hick name and they got another elite family in Bangor and overbooked their service. Well, I need them to know you do not mess with a Harper.” I sobbed to my grandfather.
“Mikey I will call you back in a couple of minutes, I know how much your sister's wedding means to you and I will fix it. I promise Mikey.” Harper was fuming I could hear it in his voice it was the how dare you screw with my granddaughter.
“Thank you, Grandpa,” I said as I hung up the phone.
I went out to the garage. “Wait here for a couple of minutes; I will come and let you know. If the phone rings let me answer.” I ordered Ellie and Jeanne.
The phone rang “Hello.” I answered.
“Mikey my attorneys are on it. I hope to have an answer by the end of the day.” Harper informed me.
“Thank you, Grandfather,” I replied to him as Ellie was behind me. She wasn’t happy I used Harper to do it but I had to.
“Mikey I will make this right for your family in Maine. I owe them everything; they took care of my baby girl.” Ellie heard what Harper had said.
“Tell your Grandfather if he is not busy to come to the wedding,” Ellie told me. Grandfather heard her.
“It would be my honour to come to the wedding. I know you are a busy baby girl I will call you before the end of the business with the results. Oh hold on, Bob just came in.” I could hear talking in the background then Harper came on. “It’s settled baby girl you will be getting a call shortly,” Harper assured me.
I barely had the phone hung up. I was going upstairs to have a shower; all of a sudden the phone rang Jeanne answered it.
I heard Jeanne say Hello, no there is no Miss Harper here. Oh Jessica, hold on one second.
Then Jeanne called out “Jessie phone.”
“Hello,” I answered.
“This is Gwendolyn from Ritz catering. I am personally calling to apologize for the mistake from your sister's weddings and how upset your family must be. We will be catering your sisters and at no charge, your money will be refunded. I am so sorry for the misunderstanding.” The caterer was pleading.
“I would expect so. You booked two weddings; because you believed this wasn’t a rich family who you could push around and cancel their booking. I hope you learned your lesson.” I was irate.
“We are truly sorry Miss Harper. It will never happen again.” The caterer was pleading with me.
“Oh by the way two more guests are coming Mr. Harper and Guest. I expect there will be no hassle.” I snapped.
“Of course Miss Harper, No trouble.” The caterer replied.
“Good.” I hung up the phone on her.
I looked over at Jeanne “It’s done you will have the caterers for your wedding.”
Jeanne came over and gave me another big hug. “Jeanne you have to stop doing that I will have broken ribs.” I pointed out. She then let me go.
Then I went and had a shower and got ready and we had to go back to Tilley’s. Not only was Tilley the seamstress she was the town hairdresser. We had to go pick out hairstyles. Tilley had an up-do picked out for me with these big curls, for Jeanne she had this elegant French roll that went with her tiara. Everything was smooth sailing now. Tilley did the up-do’s in our hair to make sure it was going to look okay in the dresses. Jeanne put on her dress and tiara she did look like a princess. I put my dress on Tilley had all of the alterations done. It fit perfectly and I looked almost as good ad. Well, that was till I turned around and there was Hope.
“Hope what are you doing hear?” I was in shock.
“Ellie invited me to come,” Hope said.
I looked at Ellie. “Really?”
“I don’t blame Hope I blame Morgan but not Hope.” Ellie Stated.
I couldn’t believe Hope had some nerve, she showed up to the wedding of the family she helped tare apart. I got changed then I left I couldn’t believe she came. I went for a walk; as usual, I ended up on the wharf and the boys were just coming in from their second trip out. I was irate. When the boat pulled up Jim jumped out to tie her up, he could see I was furious.
“Grab the line,” Jim said. “Take whatever is wrong out on the ropes.”
“Hope’s here,” I called over to Jim.
“Hope Tracy,” Jim shouted back.
“No, the Hope diamond. Yes, Hope Tracy.” I snapped back at Jim.
“Watch it, young lady, take the base out of your voice,” Jim replied. “Why is she here?” Jim added.
“Mom invited her to the wedding.” I was irate.
“Oh.” Jim was puzzled.
“Yes, I can’t believe it. The woman that tore apart our family, how could she ruin Jeanne’s day.” I was fuming.
“Hope didn’t do it, Morgan did,” Jim stated.
“She had just as much to do with it.” I snapped back. I could see Dad was upset too but he wouldn’t show it.
“JP come up here,” Jim called.
“Yeah, Jim,” Jager said as he looked over at me and he could tell I was pissed off. “What’s wrong?”
“Hope is here. Ellie invited her to the wedding.” I yelled at Jager.
“Take her somewhere to calm her down,” Jim ordered Jager.
“Come on Jess let's go somewhere to talk,” Jager said.
“I have the keys to the Weymouth house and the house is loaded for when Jeanne and Bo move in,” I replied.
We walked to the Weymouth house and Jager got into the shower. I went to the house and got him a change of clothes, then went back to the house. I was waiting for Jager to get out of the shower why would she even come to the Harbor? I mean she ruined these people’s lives. How could Ellie invite her?
Jager came downstairs “I’m sorry that she came. I can see it upset you.”
“She tore our lives apart. I know Morgan was the one who came here but he would not have known unless she told them.” I explained.
“I know you probably don’t want to hear this but if it wasn’t for that we would not have known each other. I can’t be sorry for that. I’m sorry for the situation.” Jager indicated.
“Am I supposed to feel better?” I questioned
“Baby if your parents are willing to forgive her, shouldn’t you?” Jager Replied.
“I could in Boston my Mom and Dad are not there. But here she can rub it in their face, why would she come? Sure even if Jim and Ellie could forgive her; but this is big for our family, not her family. I don’t understand why she would hurt me like this.” I exclaimed. “Harper is coming to thank the people who raised me, not to rip their hearts out as Hope will.”
“Harper is coming?” Jager asked
“Yes, we had problems with the caterers and Harper's attorneys fixed it. Mom invited him.” I answered.
“You’re okay with that?” Jager inquired.
“Yes I’m fine with that; it’s not opening up wounds, like the Tracy’s,” I replied.
“Okay,” Jager said.
“What is that supposed to mean okay?” I was Puzzled.
“I get your logic, but I don’t. I know what the Tracy’s did, but if Harper would have known he would have done the same.” Jager stated.
“But he didn’t.” I snapped back.
“Okay, you know I’m on your side, Jess.” Jager came over and put his arms around me and held me. The next thing I knew Hope came through the door.
“I’m not staying for the wedding. Ellie invited me here to bury the hatchet. What happened with Morgan even if she did invite me to the wedding I would not have come. I know what heartbreak I have caused this family; I would not have that on a happy day. To bring back all of that pain for Ellie and Jim; I couldn’t do it. I came to see you, I had business in Bangor so I just wanted to pop by and say hi and I’m going back to Boston.” Hope was saddened by my reaction to seeing her in the Harbor.
“Have a safe trip back. Hope I am sorry I snapped at you. I will see you when we get back to Boston.” I told her hugged her and she left. I was happy to see her go.
I got my head back into the game and we finished the wedding stuff. The week flew by the next thing I knew it was Friday. After the fiasco with the caterer, I was going to make sure everything else went off without a hitch.
I had the decorators come in early Friday morning. Everything was going to be perfect. I personally checked all decorations. They were perfect, everything was perfect. It was nine AM I left the decorators to make sure everything else was to plan; I would settle for nothing less, the Boston Jessica was kicking in. I was the granddaughter of Morgan Tracy and JR Harper and they were not going to screw me around.
“The decorations are to my liking and are exactly what we asked for. You have done an excellent job so far with getting them here. When can I expect to come back and see the finished product?” I commanded answers from the decorators. I felt like my grandfather in a board meeting.
“Come back at four PM, the flowers will not be in until tomorrow we want no chances of wilting for your sisters' wedding day Miss Harper.” The decorator said shaking afraid of what the consequences would be if she crossed me. I felt power like I have never known and I’m kind of liking it, the power and the fear it puts into people. It makes me smile.
“What has happened to you?” Jim was disappointed. See he took the boat down for three days with the wedding.
“Dad, what are you doing here?” I said in shock.
“I followed you; I knew something was funny when you snuck out of the house. I had to see where you were going. What you were doing? This is what I find out. What happened to you? Is this what money turned you into? I don’t believe this is what you have become. I raised you better than that and in eight months Morgan Tracy has undone what I tried to teach you in fourteen years.” Jim was furious.
“No Dad that is not who I am, I am the girl you raised. Don’t back down when someone is trying to screw you over. If using the Harper and Tracy names makes sure that doesn’t happen then so be it. My family is everything to me and no one will ever do to me what Morgan Tracy did to me and my family.” I screamed at Jim.
“Morgan Tracy tore my world apart too, not just yours,” Jim yelled.
“No Morgan took me from you; I have to live it every day. That smug son of a b***h, has ruined my life not yours. I ache every day to be that naïve little girl who was just smart. I would give anything to change everything, but I can’t I have to live in the hell known as the Tracy house.” I shouted back cutting him off.
“This is my fault I should have,” Jim stated.
“It’s not your fault; I would not have changed what I had done. I did it to protect our family. It is the same thing you would have done. I was never going to see you go to jail.” I cut Jim off again in a sombre voice.
“I don’t want you to be one of them.” Jim started to cry.
“Daddy don't cry; I’m still your little girl. I just have a little thicker skin. I have too. I can’t show weakness in my situation. Dad you have to understand.” I cried too. “Come on lets go get some ice cream.” I said as I hugged Jim.
We left the hall and started towards whistle’s we got there at nine fifty-five. Whistles didn’t open till ten. We waited outside for them to open the door; then we went and ordered our ice cream. Of course like clock work Mom came into whistle’s at ten thirty.
“You two are eating ice cream with everything that has to be done today.” Ellie was frantic.
“Mom I have dealt with the decorators and the caterer will be here at three. We don’t have to be at Tilley’s till two. We have all day.” I tried to calm Ellie down.
“Jim you have to be at Tilley’s at twelve for your tux fitting.” Ellie exclaimed.
“Ellie relax I can walk from here to Tilley’s in ten minutes. Calm down, have some ice cream.” Jim laughed.
Ellie shook her head and sat down next to Jim and he fed her a spoon full of ice cream.
“Mom was Jager home when you left?” I asked.
“He said he had to run into Bangor to get something. He said he would be back by two.” Ellie answered.
“I wonder what he is up too.” I said.
“He probably had to go to the bank.” Jim replied.
“We had a good catch this week. Two trips a day, full loads lobsters, ten loads I paid him six thousand.”Dad said.
“Dad you are luck you paid the boys two thousand dollars for the trip . I don’t care how good the catch was. Dad you can’t afford that.” I was puzzled.
“Young lady who are you to tell me what I can afford.” Jim snapped at me.
Then I realized what happened, Dad gave Jager his pay for saving his life last Saturday. “You had to force him to take it didn’t you?” I inquired.
“The boy worked hard for it Jessie. Leave it alone.” Jim told me. “Ellie I know you are going to have to go to the washroom before we go to Tilley’s.” Jim said to Ellie.
Mom knew he wanted to get rid of her. “Okay you have a point.” Ellie said knowing something was up.
“You gave him your share didn’t you?” I asked. “I know Dad.”
“I told that boy to keep quiet. I guess that boy couldn’t.” Dad was getting angry.
“Jager never told me anything Dad.” I revealed.
“Who told you? If it wasn’t JP then who was it? I know I should have figured he couldn’t hide anything from you since you were a baby. Oh how did I know Bruce would not keep his mouth shut? You never told your mother did you?” Jim lit the rapid fire of questions go.
“If I would have told Mom the boat would have been for sale by now.” I replied. “Jager was mortified that I knew; you are right my big brother couldn’t hide anything from me. Well he did keep Lori a secret. What is that boy thinking?” I added.
“Same thing you are. You are in love. Doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. But I think at least you have it right. He’s a good boy Jess; I think he’s a keeper for you. I wished I never wasted my time on another girl before your mother.” Jim expressed.
“I’m glad you think so highly of him.” I told Jim as I walked to the other side of the booth sat down and put my head on my dad’s shoulder.
“Let’s go you two we are going to be late.” Ellie commanded.
We got up and walked down to Tilley’s. When we got there the boys were already there in their tuxes. Dad went over and slapped Bruce on the back of the head.
“What was that for?” Bruce glared at Dad. “You told him didn’t you” Bruce sneered at me.
“Don’t you blame your sister.” Jim snapped at Bruce.
I giggled, I was still daddy’s girl and Bruce knew it so he shut up. We were at Tilley’s and Rick was on the step Tilley was looking to make sure everything was okay.
“You are good Rick you can get down.” Tilley said.
As Rick stepped off the stool he tweaked his ankle and started screaming and he could not stand up. The boys got Rick back to the fitting room and managed to get changed. Bruce and Dad got him into the car to drive to Dover to the hospital. Bo called Jeanne from Tilley’s and told her Rick was on his way to the hospital. We won’t know anything till Bruce gets back with him.
Jeanne started freaking out, Bo got her to calm down; they had to wait till they got back. The rest of the boys tried on there tuxes while we waited for word. Amanda and June showed up. So we tried our dresses on and Tilley had those alterations perfect. I know she pinned them and measured them but those dresses looked amazing on us. Then I looked at the clock in Tilley’s back room it was ten after two and Jager wasn’t back yet. I was worried; Jager never knew his way around Bangor what if something happened to him. But of course my worries were unfounded because at two fifteen he came in through the door at Tilley’s.
“Where were you? I was worried.” I said as I gave him his sad look.
“I had to run to Bangor, I told your mother to tell you.” Jager said as he came over and kissed me.
“You should have been back at two, it’s two fifteen.” I replied.
“You were worried about fifteen minutes. I had to go back to the house before I came here. You look amazing in that dress, you should wear it forever.” Jager gave me that half smirk.
I blushed as usual Jim laughed. “I have never seen you blushed that much in your whole life Jessie.”
I glared at Dad “Well I’m going into change I have to get to the hall before three to check on the decorators.”
When I came out of the dressing room Bruce and Rick were back. Rick was on crutches. His ankle was broken and then Jeanne started screaming the wedding was ruined. Rick was supposed to stand with me; he was about Jager’s size. I had a great idea.
“Rick and Jager are about the same size. Why don’t Jager stand for you and Bo?” I advised Jeanne.
“Sis you are a genius. JP would you please take Rick’s place for us and stand up at our wedding, plus you would be standing with Jessie. Please. ” Jeanne asked Jager.
“Please JP I know we haven’t known each other long but she will freak out if you don’t.” Bo chuckled.
You could see Jager never really wanted to, but he looked over at me and I smiled at him. He gave me that half smirk then looked over at Bo and Jeanne “Yeah sure, I would not see you stuck.”
Jeanne ran over and gave Jager a huge hug “Thank you JP thank you.”
“Then you need to get that tux on so I can fix it.” Tilley ordered.
“We have to go to the hall, Dad can you wait with Jager?” I asked Dad.
“You girls go; we will wait here for JP.” Dad answered.
“No beers Dad, if Bo smells of beer tomorrow the minister will not marry us.” Jeanne commanded.
“He is going to brush his teeth a couple of times before tomorrow Jeanne, we can have a few today. None of us are going to be hung over for tomorrow.” Dad shouted back at Jeanne.
We went to the hall and it was beautiful. The pale blue and white sheer streamed around the hall with little lights through out. Candles on every table blue and white mixed. The decorators had made little roses out of chocolate and had shinny light blue paper; around the chocolate and some kind of green tape around for the stem. There were flower vases all over the tables, which tomorrow will have blue and white roses in them. It looked like it was out of a fairy tale. The outside of the hall had chairs with white silk covers over them, the alter was white with blue sheer woven through it, and blue and white roses through the alter. A white carpet that was the isle as we were not having the wedding in the church, and we need something to cover the grass. It was beautiful.
“So Jeanne do you like it?” I asked.
“Like it I love it sis. This is amazing.” Jeanne started crying.
“Is it satisfactory?” The decorator asked me.
“It’s beautiful I cannot wait till tomorrow when the flowers are out with it.” I replied. “When will you be back in the morning to get it ready?” I inquired.
“We cannot get the flowers and Bouquets until six AM and we will leave Bangor as soon as we have them. If that is all we are going to put the chairs inside and leave for this evening as we have a very early morning.” The decorator replied.
“Thank you I will come down at ten to make sure everything is okay.” I let her know, she nodded and headed off.
“Come on we head back to the house.” Ellie suggested. “We have to have dinner and then we have to go to rehearsal tonight at seven, its four now.”
We all left got into the car and headed home. It was good thing we did the boys were about to crack open beers.
“Jim what are you doing we have rehearsal tonight at seven, what ever would the minister think if he smelled beer off of you boys.” Ellie exclaimed.
“Alright boys put them down; we will have one after church.” Jim kissed Ellie on the cheek. For some reason that always made everything alright.
Mom had cold cuts and salads made for supper. She went to whistle’s and got me fries and gravy. I hate cold plate stuff. Yuck.
We all ate got cleaned up and headed for the church. I was singing as I walked up through the church with Jager. Mikey was playing in the back, then Amanda and Bruce, then Mikey and June. I was thinking it was bad enough to sign walking up through the church; Mike had to play. We were right on queue we were at the front. Dad and Jeanne walked up and the minister. Then we went through all of the stuff that the minister had to say and what they were going to say. Then when they were going to sign the register. After that we went to the park by the water where they are going to do it outside if it didn’t rain. We finished the rehearsal and headed back to the house for a small short get together.
We all sat around for a couple hours chatting, singing and telling stories. At about ten the house started to clear out. Bo left first Jeanne went to bed and she warned us all no hangover no puffy eyes. Bruce and Lori went to Lori’s place and of course Mom spouted some choice words after they left. Mom kissed Dad goodnight and also went to bed. Dad and Jager were finishing their beer.
I went over and kissed Jager goodnight. “Don’t be up too late. You got your warning, no puffy eyes no hangovers.” I laughed kissed Dad on the cheek and went to bed. I had to be up at eight, showered and ready to go and be at Tilley’s at nine.
I went to bed happy and with one more surprised. I had my grandfather Harper fly in the best hair and makeup people in from New York. I cleared it with Tilley first she was fine with it, well as long as she got all done up too. A fifty year old lady still wants to look like a young girl too. The whole hair do thing was just so Jeanne wouldn’t know.
I was up at seven I was too excited for my sister to sleep. I didn’t know anyone was in the upstairs bathroom. I went in the bathroom I noticed it was steamy I assumed that Mom was up early and showered.
I was getting ready to get in the shower and I heard movement. I looked over; I seen a head peak out from behind the shower curtain and say “I wouldn’t do that if I were you; unless you want to go to a funeral before your sisters wedding.”
“Oh my god Jager; What are you doing?” I shrieked in a low tone of voice.
“I’m in the shower and your parent’s bathroom door does not lock.” Jager Laughed. “Now if you don’t mind I need to get dressed.” Jager stuck on hand outside of the curtain and waved me off.
I smiled “ No I don’t mind. You can get out anytime.”
“Jess.” Jager poked his head out.
I walked out, shut the bathroom door and then went downstairs and Mom had breakfast cooked. I sat down had some bacon and eggs.
Jager came downstairs looked at me with that half smirk and announced “The shower is free.”
“Well since I’ve had breakfast I will go have a shower.” I stated and gave Jager a loving glare.
I got in the shower and I was singing, well practicing the song for the wedding. Believe it or not I can’t help falling in love with you is a hard song to sing. I got out of the shower, got dressed and went back downstairs. It was eight o’clock; everyone was downstairs Mom, Dad, Jager and Jeanne was ready to go. The boys had to be at the Weymouth house and we were going to Tilley’s.
“Hey JP you have to go with the girls to get that hair done.” Jim laughed.
“Ha ha that’s so funny Jim.” Jager joked with Dad.
“Come on we head up to the Weymouth house.” Jim said to Jager
“My house.” Jeanne reminded him.
“Okay. Whatever.” Jim said.
Jim went and gave Ellie a kiss; Jager came and kissed me. “Boy you need to stop that. That’s my baby girl.” Jim was ribbing him.
“I promise you I’m the only man she will ever kiss.” Jager was looking at me saying that to Jim. “Let’s go.”
“Mom we have to head to the hall first I want to make sure the decorator is there and everything is going to plan.” I said as Jeanne, Mom and I left the house.
