Ellie and Jim were there to pick me up in Bangor. I got off the plane ran to my mom and dad gave them a big hug and cried. I was so happy to see them. I could spend a week with them; there will be no games, no one-upmanship. Just me being able to be me, no plotting, no scamming, I could just be a kid.
We drove to Abbot Harbor, we talked about everything it was great; I could not wait to see Bruce and Jeanne. Dad could not wait to tell me that Jeanne was getting married to Bo Michaels in the spring and how they're planning their wedding. Can’t really afford a big affair but we're going to have a good show.
“I’ll pay for the wedding,” I told my Dad.
“How are you going to pay for a wedding?” my Dad said almost forgetting I had the Tracy’s money then it clicked. “No, you will not.”
“I have the money. Why not let me help.” I said perturbed.
“It’s not your money, it’s theirs” My Dad snapped back
“No it’s my money Michael left me the company and it’s my money, I can help,” I stated.
“Okay I’m not taking your money either, Honey I love the fact you want to help but I don’t need it we’re okay we have most of it paid for; the only problem we’re having is the venue.” My Dad said upset at first but then calmed down.
“What’s wrong with the venue?” I asked
“I want them to book the Hall at least if something happens it’s safe,” Dad said
“Safe from what?” I said puzzled.
“Rain. They want an outdoor wedding; Maine is too unpredictable to plan for outdoors, but your sister thinks it’s not going to rain on her wedding day.” Dad said.
“I see,” I said with a little chuckle.
We kept driving chit chatting until we got to Abbot Harbor. We walked into the house and there was a big party for me coming home; I swear half of the town was there. I went and talked to all of my friends and family. Then I went and used the phone and had to call the Tracy’s to let them know I got here or so I told them. The first call I made was to Jager. I missed him and I wasn’t gone 24 hours. We talked for a few minutes. As much as I loved being home, I could not wait to spend new year’s with him. Told him I had to go and I would see him on the 28th I was going to surprise him on the 26th.
My next call was to Hope to let her know I was here and we got in ok and they were having a big party here for me.
“How are Jim and Ellie?” Hope asked
“They're great. Happy to have me home for Christmas.” I said
“We are holding off Christmas here till you get back on the 26th,” Hope said
“You can’t do that Savannah is 10, Santa comes on the 25th. You have to do it for her.” I said.
“Santa is going to come for Savannah on Christmas day, but we are not doing the dinner or other presents until you get back,” Hope said
“Cool. But I need a favor. I need 10000 sent to the bank here. My sister is getting married I want to pay for the hall and get some Christmas gifts.”
“That’s a lot of money, Jessica.” Hope said.
“Harper Mark money, that’s in my trust. Get 10000 and wire it to the Abbot Harbor bank Mother. I have a scholarship I don’t need the money for school. I will expect the money in the bank tomorrow by three.” I suggested to Hope, letting her know I know about my trust.
“Okay, the money will be wired to the bank tomorrow,” Hope said
“Thank you, Mother,” I said. “I will call you tomorrow. Goodbye.”
I went to the bank at three, and sure thing there were 10,000 dollars there for me. I went to the hall and paid the 1000 dollars to book it for the wedding day. Went to the caterer and paid 3000 for the food, she was going to have a big buffet for her supper. Called Bangor and booked limos for the day 8 limos for another 1000 dollars. Just had to get to Bangor tomorrow, that’s where my brother Bruce comes in. I talked to my brother and we were going to Bangor.
Bruce wasn’t happy when I told him where I got the money, but when I told him that it was mine; he let it go. We went to pay for the limos first and then the mall with my other 5000 dollars for Christmas gifts for the family. I got diamond earrings, a necklace and a bracelet for my mom. I got a whole bunch of new tools for my dad. My Sister, I got her a bracelet, earring, and necklace diamonds with a blue tinge. Bruce went around and picked out a bunch of different stuff for himself, game systems, tools, clothes you name it he got it. I liked making my brother happy. Out of everything I miss in Abbot Harbor I miss Bruce, I know I have my BFF but Bruce was always there for me he is the best big brother any girl can ever have, I could talk to him about anything.
“So, what’s new?” Bruce asked.
“Not much,” I said kind of sheepish
“Sis I know you better than that. What have you been up to? Who’s Jager? Why do you call him Jager? I hope it’s not for the reasons we call men Jager’s.” Bruce Asked.
“What is this twenty questions? How do you know about Jager?” I asked puzzled
“I went to find you at the party you were on the phone Jager and then Hope,” Bruce said.
“You listened in on my conversations, really like really?” I said fuming.
“Calm down sis, I was there well I did listen in on you and Hope. So, what are you up to? Sis, I know how your mind works. I’m scared for you; these are ruthless people you are dealing with here. You saw what they were willing to do to dad.” Bruce said all concerned.
“I have it all under control Bruce,” I told him
“So, answer my question,” Bruce said.
“Jager is my boyfriend. At first, I thought he was a Jager and I ended up getting the whole school calling him that. But after I got to know him and he helped me out in an unpleasant situation. Then I had a big fight with the Tracy’s on my birthday and he was there for me; we have been dating ever since.” I told my brother smiling the whole time I was telling him the story.
“ Well he obviously makes you happy Sis, but if he hurts you I will come to Boston and hurt him. So what was the part with Hope, the money?” Bruce asked.
“This conversation stays between us. My biological father was Michael Harper who had a marketing company, you may have heard of Harper Mark. In his will, he left Harper Mark to his unborn child, which is me. He left it in trust to Hope, profits were to be put in a trust fund until I was 18 and the funds would be passed over to me; when I turned 25 the entire company would be turned over to me. But there is a clause that if any money from Harper Mark was put into the Tracy’s business from Harper Mark, Hope would lose control and revert over to my Grandfather Michael Harper JR until I was 18. My biological father knew my mother really well because she made Harper Mark a huge business, but she also gave millions to Morgan for the wrestling company. So I just hinted that I knew and I wanted some of my money. Besides I have my Grandfather JR doing my dirty work.” I said with a conniving smile.
“Sis, what are you doing? You’re playing with fire. What do you have JR doing for you?” Bruce asked and you could see the worry on his face.
“You know that JR Harper is like on the top 5 wealthiest people in North America. I put the idea in his head that I wanted to be in the wrestling business. I overheard a conversation that Morgan and Allan had about buying up the territories in the U.S.A, so I told JR and he bought them up before the Tracy’s did. He knows I want the business, and he hates the Tracy’s. So he is buying out any territories and plans on taking it across the country putting the Tracy’s out of business.” I chuckled as I told my brother.
“But couldn’t you do that now if you tell JR about the Harper Mark money going into TWW?” Bruce asked.
“Yes I could but I need that information for myself when I need it, but for now JR will do my dirty work and ruin them. By the time I’m old enough JR will have the entire wrestling world and I will take it all over. Isn’t a great plan? I can’t wait till it all comes out.” I said happily.
“Just be careful it doesn’t backfire on you,” Bruce said
We got back to Abbot Harbor; we brought the bags into the house and went to bed; tomorrow was Christmas Eve and it was a busy day at our house.
I woke up in the morning my Dad had a huge breakfast; eggs, bacon, ham, hash browns, pancakes, homemade waffles, sausage, different fruits, yogurt, toast, and different juices. My father would have the boat crew and their families if they had them; see there were only five of them, Dad, Bruce and three of Bruce’s buddies. Not too many people stick around on the boats, it’s hard work and it depends on the catch of what you get paid but no matter how bad the year was Dad would always show his appreciation for the boys.
We all sat there, we had to say grace, Dad would smack you if you didn’t say grace. You came dressed up, my father’s made the boys wear their best. To my dad, this was a special time to be with family and my dad treated his crew like family. Then we ate and chatted for a couple of hours, the boys thanked my father and went home. Then we got ready and headed to the hall. It was a small town and a bunch of the ladies would get together and cook dinner for the entire town. It was a time for the whole community to come together. After dinner, someone in the community would dress up as Santa and gave the children gifts. Then the under ages went home the older kids looked after the younger kids and the parents had a few sociable, then came home and wrapped the gifts and went to bed till the morning.
After Mom and Dad went to bed Bruce and I went downstairs and put all of the gifts under the tree. It looked like Santa had been there. Then we went back to bed to wait till morning.
We woke Christmas day; my older sister was always the first up she started banging on my and my brothers' doors, screaming its Christmas day. Mom, Dad, Bruce, and I went down over the stairs and Jeanne was screaming “look at all the stuff.” My mother and father had a puzzled look on their face and it was like it clicked.
“It’s going back.” My father said.
“No, it’s not.” I said.
“I’m not taking anything from them.” Jim said.
“It’s not their money. It is mine from my business.” I said. “Michael left me a business and a fair amount of money, my money. Dad open your gifts be thankful and don’t mention their names.”
My father hemmed and hammed but eventually he gave up, when he seen the bunch of new tools he needed for the boat, he smiled at me and said.
“I will pay you back.”
“You gave me a great life, that’s my payment” I told Jim and kissed him on the cheek.
Then my sister started crying when she opened her wedding box, the hall, limo, catering, and the necklace set, she hugged me and couldn’t stop crying. My father looked at me and I told him “Don’t start.”
He looked at me and smiled. “You never did listen to me.”
We had a big turkey dinner and enjoyed what time we had together. We spent all of our time we had left together; we were happy but sad. We knew the morning would come and we would be off to Bangor to fly back to Boston. I was sad to leave but I wanted to see Jager.
We got up the next day, I said goodbye to my Dad and sister and told them I would see them at the end of January. Mom, Bruce and I got in the car we drove to Bangor I got on the plane and went back to Boston, tears in my eyes the whole way. I missed my Mom and Dad. I was a pawn in a chess game with the Tracy’s but the angrier I would get about what they have done I was determined I was going to turn from a pawn to a queen.
