Anara.
I was happy to be home.I felt comfort.
“anara! You've slept enough, come down!” Evelyn yelled from downstairs and I groaned sleepily tossing to the side. The sun instantly shone on my face. I squinted my eyes and got up. I rubbed my eyes with my fingers and made my way to the bathroom. After brushing my teeth I went downstairs, and the smell of pancakes instantly filled my nose, making me smile lightly.
“good morning”I greeted
“Morning”she greeted me back, I sat on the table and started eating.
“I didn't exactly ask you what happened”
“I don't exactly know too”
“anara”
“I'm serious, I just know I got angry and the next thing, the shadows took over”
“Has it happened before?”
“no”
“Does your principal know about the shadows?”
“she doesn't”
“hmm, you should keep it that way”
“I don't know what to do”
“don't worry Evelyn, I'll be fine”
“but you don't have anyone who will help you know about your legacy”
“I'll figure it out soon”
“times like this I hated being human”I just chuckle.
“it's not easy being a supernatural,I wasn't in control yesterday and what if one day the shadows fully take control of my body”
“you won't let that happen, you're strong anara”I just nod.
“hey we're out of flour, I was thinking of making pie”
“okay, I'll freshen up and stop by the store to get some”
“aren't you a sweetheart?”Evelyn said pinching my cheeks like I'm a child
“yeah yeah”I finished eating and went to shower. I wore a Grey joggers and black shirt then packed my hair in a high ponytail. The bite marks were gone. I shake my head, not allowing myself to think about it all over again.
“Oh little witch, you can't forget me.” his voice echoed.
This time it didn't sound faint, it was like he whispered directly in my ear. I looked around the room, it was empty.
Without further thoughts I left. I bought the flour, and also grabbed some chocolates and snacks. I payed for them and left the store, I was strolling on the walkway when my purse fell from my hand, I bent to pick it up and when I stood up the old lady from the café was staring at me
“uhm excuse me”I muttered about walking past her
“anara” she called and I stopped in my tracks.
“The shadow has a name, and once you name it… It becomes real”I turn back
“Who are you?”
“It doesn't matter who I am. Stop running away, accept it”
“I'm afraid of what I'll become,” she smiles.
“your magic is alive anara, you either control it or it takes over your body”
“how do I even control it? I don't know anything”
“with time you'll figure it out”
“If you know something you have to tell me, you have to help me,”I said, my voice breaking.
“You don't even know what you're capable of yet, you're the last of your kind anara and you have woken him, you've broken the curse”
“What curse?”she brings out a big old book and hands it to me, I took it from her, it's a grimoire.
“it belongs to you. The black veil codex. You'll find out all you need to know there” she turns to leave
“wait”she turns around
“Who's the person haunting me?”
“He's not haunting you. You are one”
“How is that possible! I don't even know him, I don't know his name”
“Yes you do, stop running, take control, feel him,”she said and left.
I'm so tired I could just—
“arghhhhhhh!”scream, that was in my head though. I don't want to destroy my town. I went back home, my phone rang immediately I got in, it was Evelyn. I made my way to the kitchen and dropped all the things I bought on the counter before answering.
“anara so sorry, I kinda went out”
“Who's the guy?”I said already knowing it was a date, from her tone
“He's from work but hey if you want me to come back now I can—”
“Enjoy your date Evelyn. You deserve it”
“muah! Take care okay”
“yeah, have fun”I end the call. I walked over to the fridge and opened it, scanning and looking for what to have. A strange chill slid over my skin. It wasn't cold exactly, just wrong. Like someone had breathed against the back of my neck.
Don't be weird, you've had a long day. I thought to myself.
But Inside, the house was quiet. Too quiet.
The kind of silence that didn’t feel empty, but watched. I shook off the feeling and went to my room.
My room was the same. Messy. Familiar. Safe.
But as I stood in front of the mirror to pull off my shirt, my eyes flicked upward—just for a second—and caught something that wasn’t my staring back.
I froze.
No, no, it was me. Just… for a heartbeat, it wasn’t.
My reflection had been slower. Eyes darker. Like a shadow had been standing behind me, and slipped away when i blinked.
“What the hell…”
I turned.
Nothing there.
But my chest was tight now. My breath was shallow.
I pressed my fingers to my temples, trying to shake it off—but then came the voice.
Low. Velvet. Dangerous.
“You felt me.”
I whipped around. “Who’s there?”
Silence.
My heart pounded. My skin prickled.
Then the mirror fogged slightly—only on the inside.
One word appeared, drawn slowly like a fingertip trailing through steam.
“Mine.”
“Yes you do. Stop running, take control, feel him.”the old lady's voice played repeatedly in my head and I started saying it too. I closed my eyes and continued saying it. I tried to feel him, to reach him, images started appearing in my head, they were blurry. Coven of witches. It was breezy, real breezy. They were chanting something. He was there, in the center. He—
I felt connected. My heart raced fast, real fast.
My eyes snap open.
“lu—.”I passed out.
