Outside Roland’s family home, Lauren’s eyes narrowed on Roland who quickly ended the call and put his phone down. “Big brother, is something wrong?” she asked. “What, no, everything’s fine,” Roland answered. He tucked the phone into his side pocket and rose to his feet. “I was only talking to a friend.” Lauren’s eyes shone with curiosity. “A friend, was it someone you met while you were away? Perhaps the young man who sent you a text the other day, Jason.” Roland gritted his teeth, heart squeezing inside. The way Lauren called his name almost like she was open to receiving him into her life. She doesn’t even know him, doesn’t know what kind of man she was referring to. “Roland, if it’s Jason, maybe it would be nice of you to invite him over so that both dad and I can get to know him.”
