Ch 1
Emmalee
"Em, it's time to get up, honey."
"Momma, please, five more minutes," I plead.
"No ma'am. Up."
Ugh. I hate starting my days being woken up to go to work. Luckily, I get woken gently by my mother every day. Others aren't so lucky. A lot of the Omega families have parents that are so unpleased with their station, they take it out on their kids. I really lucked up with my parents. They are kind and loving even though each day is a struggle for all of us.
I roll out of bed just in time to beat my sister to the bathroom.
"HA! I get the hot shower this morning!" I laugh as I stick my tongue out at her. I know Riley cannot stand a cold shower, but honestly, neither can I. And I typically let my baby sister go first, but not today. Today, I start my new job at the packhouse. I have finally worked my way up from the laundry room to the kitchen. Not a huge leap in the grand scheme, but it pays more, so I'll take it. Anything to help my parents.
After I quickly shower (to save some hot water for my sister because I'm not a monster), I skip down the stairs to breakfast.
"Good morning, Daddy," I say as I kiss him on the cheek.
"Well, good morning baby girl. You're in a good mood this morning." I notice the twinkle in his eye. We all pretend not to notice that I'm the favorite, but that twinkle is reserved just for me. And he knows how excited I am about moving up in the packhouse.
"I am! I still can't really believe that I've already gotten a small promotion. More money for the family, and my hard work is being recognized. What more could a girl ask for?"
Realistically, I know a girl could ask for a lot more. But I'm a glass half full kinda girl.
I quickly eat the small breakfast my mom has prepared, kiss my parents, and rush out the door. I know I'll probably be half an hour early, but I'd rather be early than late. Once I reach the grounds of the packhouse, I notice the warriors training. Among them is my big brother Noah. I catch his eye and he gives me a quick thumbs up. To most, it's not a big deal. But to me, it means the world. Noah and I can communicate without words most of the time, so I know that thumbs up means he truly believes in me.
As I approach the packhouse, I realize this is the first time I will be using the front doors. Usually, I'm required to go in through the back to reach the basement laundry area. I smile to myself as I enter.
This is going to be such a great day.
