Chapter 12

Lucas

I hated to leave her, but I couldn't lead the rogues to her, and I needed to go help deal with them. I linked Damien on my way." I'm on my way back, what do we know?"

"I have scouts and warriors headed to the east and west, we've heard possibly 50." Damien linked back.

"50! We've never seen that many at once" I was growling as Gavin was trying to come forward.

"I know!" Damien linked.

"I'm still an hour and a half away. Let me know and I'll park the car". I linked back

"Got it!" Damien linked back

We are faster in wolf form, so I could park the car and come back for it. "I want to rip some rogues apart for making us leave, mate", Gavin growled.

"We should not leave, mate, she isn't safe," Gavin screamed.

"She's safer without us there. Leading them to her with our scent", I told him.

"She should be with us; we will keep her safe", Gavin argued.

"She doesn't know what we are. We don't even know if she'll accept us", I screamed back.

Gavin just growled back at me, he knew but didn't want to accept that we shouldn't just take Val whether she wanted or not. As I pulled up to the packhouse, Damien met me out front. "What do we know" I asked.

"There were less than 10 spotted to the north. The warriors have run them off, nothing back yet from the east and west." He reported.

" I want reports on my desk ASAP. " I told him.

"So how was it?" Damien asked, trying to change my mood.

"Fantastic until this!" I growled. "I'm going back tomorrow, and she said that you and Dy can come talk about cake, if you're available", I told him.

He rolled his eyes, as I could hear a squeal and" thank you" from Dy over the link.

We headed to my office to continue our conversation. My chest felt heavy as I ascended the stairs. I wonder if that was Val, I wonder if she’s OK? "I reached for my phone and texted her. "Back safe, sorry for having to leave. Make it up to you tomorrow: )"

"Glad you made it back OK. No need to be sorry. I understand. I'll hold you to that. Lol.; )" She replied

and then "sweet dreams"

"They would be sweeter if you were here. " I responded.

"And I'm the whipped one?" I heard Damien chuckling from across the room.

I smiled " I don't want to mess this up, but I also don't know how this will work. " I said.

Val

I watched Lucas leave, and I felt sad that he had left after such an amazing night, but I could never ask him to stay when he was needed elsewhere.

I finished getting ready for bed, only to wake up after running through the forest. Only this time I didn't wake up until the wolves started ripping me open to eat me.

Pouring sweat, I kicked off the blankets and just shook my head. Then it popped into my head again, Max! Max might know why I started or why it finally ended these dreams before. I will have to talk to him in the next couple of days.

I tried going back to sleep, only to have the same dream again a few hours later. " Well, 3 am wakeup call it is! " I said to myself.

I got ready for the day and grabbed some clothes for later. At some point, I would have to stop back by and take care of the dogs. I headed to the Cafe, and started working on some different cupcake types to show Lucas' friends later today.

It was almost 6 now and people would slowly trickle in on their way to work or school. Just before 8, Heather slammed through the door. "Sorry! Running behind! " she said grumbly.

"It's okay, you haven't missed anything " I told her.

"I haven't huh? What about tall, dark, and handsome from yesterday? " she said, grinning at me

" What about him?" I chided back.

"Come on, give it to me! Who is he? Where is he from? What happened? " she said, bombarding me with questions.

"He's from the town 2 hours east of here. He's the head of a school", I told her.

"So, he's from the cult 2 hours away!" She said shocked

"It's an exclusive school from what he said, " I told her.

She hammered about what had happened during dinner and after, but I just kept myself busy baking and doing other things. I wasn't sure how to describe everything and I certainly wasn't ready to talk about it. It still almost felt unreal.

It was 1130 and I went to go change my clothes, so I wasn't covered in flour and what not from working this morning. I put on just a little bit of mascara, which, of course, Heather gave me a hard time with. I felt butterflies in my stomach at the thought of seeing him, and nervous to meet his friends that were coming.

Lucas

Damien and Dy, and I drove separately so I had a vehicle, and they could go back to the packhouse after discussing cake.

I linked them both. "Hey, by the way, remember Val knows nothing about us and thinks we work at an exclusive school".

"Why a school again?" Dy linked back.

"It was the best I could come up with, considering she thought we lived in a cult". I explained

"Well, she's not wrong?" Dy said, chuckling.

"And you still haven't figured out why her and why the wolf dreams?" She asked.

"No, not yet. Maybe you guys will get a better feeling while you're there." I linked them.

We pulled up to the Cafe, and both looked around. "Still not much here " Damien linked jokingly.

As we walked in, I could see Val behind the counter with a smile. I just wanted to melt right there and scoop her up in my arms and carry her away to do so many things. She came walking out to me and I bent down to kiss the top of her head, and then made introductions. "Val, this is Damien and Dy." I told her.

"Nice to meet you two." She replied "we can sit over here and talk, motioning to the table in the corner.

Val

"So, Lucas tells me that you need a cake?" I said, questioning

Lucas' friend Damien was pretty much as tall as him and, if it was possible, slightly wider in the shoulders. I don’t know what they feed people at that school, but good lord! Damien's fiancé Dy was very pretty, about 5'10, with long brown hair and blue eyes. They definitely were a cute couple.

As Dy explained to me what happened to the person that was supposed to make the cake, Lucas reached over and held my hand as we both listened. I asked how many people, how elaborate they wanted, and explained that I bake all the time but had never made anyone's wedding cake before. I got up and went to the bakery case, as Heather eyeballed me, watching the entire interaction. "Here are some flavors to try, and if there are other flavors you are looking for, let me know!" I said as I set the cupcakes out in front of them with a knife, so they could split them.

"There is vanilla, chocolate/chocolate, chocolate peanut butter, and lemonaspberry," I said as I set them all down.

Damien and Dy cut into them, with Dy taking the smallest bite and her fiancé taking the rest almost in one bite, which made me chuckle.Dy saw me chuckling and said " I'm sorry. He forgets his manners sometimes and that he doesn't have to fight for food "

We all laughed as Damien wiped his face and said, "I approve of all those".

Dy rolled her eyes, “Can you text me the price for the cake and cupcakes?" She asked. "I just have to check with my mom before saying yes."

"Oh absolutely!" I told her.

I got up to clean things up and walked back into the kitchen with the dirty dishes. "Okay, so now that is over. What is your guy's plan for the rest of the day?" Dy asked. "I'd like to get to know you,, if you're going to be hanging out with this big lug," she said, pointing at Lucas.

"I don't know what he had in mind. I know I need food at some point," I told her.

"Great! Me too! Lunch??" Dy said, questioning the boys.

"They nodded in agreement. I guess not wanting to cause any waves. I looked at Lucas and said, "I just need to run by the house and let the dogs out. "

"No problem," he said," we can follow you over there. "

I gathered my stuff and headed out the door to my vehicle. We headed to my place, pulling into the driveway with their 2 vehicles behind me. "I'll be back in a few" I said, heading into the house.

Lucas

We got out of our vehicles as we waited for Val to let her dogs out. Dy spoke up" she seems really sweet and cute as a button!"

" I agree!" I told her. I could barely take my eyes off her as she was talking to her and Damien earlier.

"So, I thought you said she wasn't a wolf? “ Dy said hesitantly.

"Did you smell it too?" I asked her and Damien

"I thought it was a figment of my imagination yesterday, “ I explained. "She's never said anything about it, and I know that first day she didn't smell like wolf. "

Damien shook his head in agreement. "She definitely has a slightly different scent than the other day. Do you think it could just be a residual from you?"

Dy shook her head no, " she doesn't smell like Lucas, she smells human, but not quite." She spoke.

Val was heading back to us, so we started talking about good options. "What are you guys talking about?" She asked.

"Just where to eat. What are you hungry for?" I asked.

"I'm open for anything, but the Mexican place is pretty good and the steak place we went to, unless you want to drive to the "big city" in air quotes", Val said.

We decided on Mexican and headed to our vehicles. At least Val was starting to wait for me to open her doors for her. The lunch conversation was good. Dy kept asking Val things about her past, where she was from, which at least Val didn't seem to notice anymore than getting to know someone. Val did seem suspicious that we all "worked" in the same place, until Dy said she was from another town.

Val

Lunch was great, getting to know a couple of Lucas' friends. Still weird that they all went to school and then never left? Dy did explain that wasn't horribly unusual. Damien and Lucas were both perfect gentlemen pulling our chairs for us and opening the doors. We said our goodbyes at the car, and Dy told me she'd text me. Lucas and I headed back toward my house. Conversation was so easy, and he held my hand as we drove back.

Lucas came around and opened the car door for me, as a familiar voice came from behind me "not working today?" Looking around to see Max.

" Oh no half day off Max. How are you? “ I asked.

"I'm good, was just passing by and saw the strange vehicle pull in and wanted to make sure you were okay." He stated.

"I'm good. Sorry Max, this is Lucas, Lucas. This is Max. Kind of a surrogate dad of sorts", I explained.

"It's nice to meet you," Lucas said without a pause.

"Max, you want to come in for some tea? I just made some sweet tea this morning", I asked.

"Well, you know I can't turn that down, " Max replied.

Lucas

As we arrived back at Val's house, the smell of wolf filled my nose as I got out of the vehicle and walked to her side. As I opened the door we heard "not working today?" From this older gentleman walking up smiling at Val. He was small, much smaller than any wolf.

"He's looking at Mate!" Gavin screamed.

" Calm down, he seems to be a friend of hers", I told him.

Then I heard my name snapping me back to the conversation. "Sorry Max, this is Lucas, Lucas, this is Max. Kind of a surrogate dad of sorts". Val said

"It's nice to meet you" I said as Val invited him inside for tea. I wonder how long it will take to get him back out of here.

We both followed him inside, as Val started to prepare things in the kitchen and then went to let the dogs out. I turned to Max as we both waited in the living room/kitchen area for Val to return.

"Look alpha, she doesn't know" Max linked me.

"How did you..." I started to talk

"I'm part of your pack but left a long time ago. I occasionally send in reports from out here. You never noticed?" Max linked back.

Now that he mentioned it, I always wondered who Max was on reports. " What do you mean she doesn't know? Doesn't know what? " I linked back quickly before Val returned.

"She doesn't know about our kind, and that she is one. I'll have to explain later." Max linked quickly as Val returned.

"You guys having a face-off? " She asked as she walked in with drinks.

"Oh, no, just waiting for you." I replied.

Max finished his tea and said "Well, I'll let you two get back to your plans. Give me a holler later when you want to shoot!"

"Okay, will do, I was going to call you anyway about some other stuff" she said as Max waved and walked out.

What did he mean? She doesn't know she is one? Those words resonated in my head. Val quickly snapped me out of my head.

"So now what?" Val asked, looking at me.

"How about this?" I said, grabbing her and pulling her on top of me as I simultaneously slammed my lips on to hers.

Val

I wasn't sure what I walked back in on, as Max and Lucas stood in the living room, not speaking but looking at each other. You guys having a face-off? " I asked, trying to ease the tension.

They both laughed, saying they were waiting for me and took their drinks. Max didn't even sit; he just drank his tea quickly and said, "well I'll let you two get back to your plans. Give me a holler later when you want to shoot!"

"Okay will do, I was going to call you anyway about some other stuff" I said as he walked to the door.

I took his glass and waved goodbye as he pulled out of the driveway. I walked back to the living room with Lucas looking like he was deep in thought. "So now what?" I asked. "How about this?" He said quickly, pulling me on top of his lap, straddling his hips and pulling my lips to his. We sat there tasting every inch of each other’s mouth, until he released my mouth. Lucas listened intently and asked questions about my dreams now and before when I was a kid. "Do you think Max would know more about things when you were a kid?" Lucas asked.

"I was going to talk to him, since you and I talked about my ring the other day, plus my dreams haven't stopped since." I told him.

"Well, maybe we can have dinner and figure it out?" Lucas said, "and what is this about shooting?" He questioned.

"Well, I told you he was like a surrogate father, he taught my mom and I how to shoot, so we could protect ourselves out here alone." I explained.

"I see. So, like Annie Oakley? " he said, chuckling.

"Kind of," I laughed back " I was an Olympic hopeful for a bit" I said, trailing off.

"Seriously? What happened? " Lucas asked, surprised.

"My mom got sick, so I stepped away to take care of her and the Cafe." I told him.

" Oh, I see. I'm sorry baby." He said.

"For what?" I asked.

"Losing a dream, your nightmares, and losing your mom." He said sweetly
