Chapter 14

Walking in to the kitchen I found Roe pouring herself a glass of rum. "It's not even noon." I commented. Watching as she frowned at me. "No, but it's five o'clock somewhere." Roe mumbled as she sat down at the breakfast bar, first aid kit in front of her. "Besides after today, I think it's needed." She had a point. The girl had taken on a wolf and somehow managed to not only survive with a few scratches, but seriously injure the rogue. But something was off. This wasn't just about the wolf. "Definitely deserved. But come on, what's up?" I asked as I sat down beside her. She sighed. "Everything. I don't remember what I did out there, but I know it's not normal for someone to know how to take on a wolf. I didn't even know wolves were that big. What if...what if I'm not a good person? I mean is anyone even looking for me?" Her eyes were full of worry as she watched me. Sighing, I decided to tell her the truth. She always knew when I lied anyway. "We can't find any missing persons reports that match your name or description." Her face fell slightly as she looked intently at her drink. Swirling it around the glass. "See? What if no ones looking for me because I did something horrible? What if I turn out to be a murderer? What then? I like my life now. I like being here with you guys and Da...everyone." Oh, so this about Damien. What did he do that has her thinking about this now? "Is that all?" I asked, raising my eyebrow mockingly at her. "Jace! This is serious!" She whined as she put her head in her hands. She really was worried about this. "Roe you saved two kids today. I think we can safely rule out you being a murderer." I said softly. I wanted to comfort her, but I knew touching her was a bad idea. "What's got you thinking like this? You're our annoying little sister, nothing will change that. I promise." She looked up at me sceptically. "Now tell me the real reason." "That is the real reason." She frowned as she downed her drink, a soft blush spreading up her cheeks. "Oh you're blushing, is this about Damien? Did something happen?" She blushed even more and turned away from me. "I have no idea what you're talking about." "If you say so." I smirked, standing up to leave. "You know where loverboy is when you're ready to talk" Her shocked expression caused me to burst out laughing as I ran from the kitchen. That girl had a mean kick and I did want another one.  "Alpha did you do something to Roe?" I mind-linked Damien. "Why is something wrong? Is she okay?" His voice sounding worried. I shook my head trying not to laugh. Only a Mate could make an Alpha worry. "She's day drinking for a start and it's not just because of the rogues. What else could have happened between breakfast and now?" It's not even lunch yet! "Well we kissed. We may have kissed again after she saved the kids too." "That can't be..." "What has she said?" He interrupted. "I'm not sure it's my place to say." I mumbled. "Jace, she's my Mate tell me!" His voice was laced with a threat. "She's...well she's scared." "Scared of what? She wasn't scared of that f*****g rogue earlier." He growled. "You're right there. " She was incredibly brave and stupid. "I think you should talk to her about it. I'm not getting involved." "Jace!" He yelled so loud in my head that I had to stop moving. "Alpha talk to you're Mate. It's not my place." I grimaced as a headache now pounded in my skull. Stupid Alpha's with no anger control. Damien's P.O.V "What's going on with you and Roe?" Dad's stern voice came into the office. Of course he had noticed. Another day of her ignoring me was driving me insane so I had decided to try and focus on the paperwork that was piling up on my desk. She was impossibly good at avoiding me and I only seemed to enter rooms she had already vacated. It was as though she could sense me coming and it was infuriating. I just wanted to hear voice again and to see her smile. "Nothing." I muttered, not looking up from the papers I was signing. "Nothing?" Dad pressed, standing in front of the desk. "Nothing." I repeated. It was clear that Dad wasn't going to accept that answer though. Sitting back in my chair I dragged a hand down my face. "She's just mad at me and I don't even know why." I sighed. I had no idea what to do. Demon just wanted to lock her in our room and explain everything to her, but it wasn't that simple. "It could be." He growled but I ignored him. Stupid Mutt. "At least other girls are easy to figure out." I spoke out loud. Give them attention and buy them pretty things, it was easy. But with Roe everything was difficult. She wasn't like any girl I had ever met. "And they all bored you to tears. With a girl like Roe, some parts of her will always remain a mystery. You're going to spend the rest of your life trying to figure her out. She needs to trust you and to trust that you aren't going anywhere. You can't just shut down and avoid her." He pointed out. He was right, every other girl had bored within minutes, but I wasn't the one avoiding her. "She's avoiding me and.." I tried to explain but he cut me off. "So you're going to let her? You're really going to let her push you away and prove all her doubts right?" Dad crossed his arms over his chest and stared down at me. "She's pushing me away?" I asked, more to myself. Why would she push me away when she clearly enjoys being close to me? "I thought that was obvious. Look Son, as tough as Roe seems she is just a girl who's scared of getting hurt. She's lost too much as it is. Now fix it! Because son or not, if I don't see her happy again soon, I will beat you into next week." With that threat, he left me to ponder my Mate's behaviour and wonder how the hell I could get her to trust me. Was this what she was scared of? Loosing me? I didn't have long to think before one of my top warriors mind-linked me. "Alpha, there's some guys at the east border demanding that we hand Roe over." Kai's voice was calm but I was far from it. How dare they! "On my way." I growled. "Alpha...Roe's here too." f**k! As I neared the border, Demon finally gave me back control and I quickly changed back into a human. Slipping on some shorts hidden in a tree before I ran the short distance to where Roe's scent was coming from. Stepping through the tree's I found three scruffy looking men snarling and eyeing my Mate as she hid behind Warren. Hastily, I moved closer to her and snarled back at the men. Watching as they coward a little I took notice of their appearance. Unwashed clothes, ripped jeans and shirts. They were clearly rogues even if the smell wasn't evidence enough. "Give her to us!" The tallest one, in the middle shouted. "She is ours! She is our sister and we want her back!" "She is not yours!" I growled. Demon was fighting to take control. Who are these men to think they can claim my Mate! "She's not going anywhere!" I could feel myself shaking with anger when small hands wrapped around my arm, sending those amazing tingles through me and calming me down slightly. Looking down I saw Roe clinging to me while she stared at the men with a terrified look on her face. "She is ours!" The one on the left yelled. His greasy blonde hair falling over his eyes. "She is not! You don't even resemble her at all." Not one of them had any features that resembled her. never mind the fact that they were all wolves. "What kind of i***t do you take me for?" "She is ours!" The middle on yelled again. I was about to yell back when I felt Roe's hands leave my arm as she stepped in front of me. Anger had replaced the fear as she looked into my eyes. Leaving me speechless. "Stop talking about me like I'm an object!" She turned to face the strange men. Her voice was calm as she spoke. "I don't know you and I don't trust you. You're no family of mine and I'm not going anywhere with you. Warren." She turned to face him. "Make sure they leave." A slight nod from him, his gaze trained on the strangers. Of course he listened to her, she was acting like a Luna. She turned to walk away and paused next to me. "Can I speak with you?" Not waiting for a response, she walked towards the pack house.  When we had walked a fair distance through the trees she stopped and leaned against a tree. Her breathing was as erratic as her heartbeat. f**k! She was panicking. Quickly I went to her side and tried to comfort her. "It's going to be okay." I said softly only for her push me away and glare at me. "No! No, you don't get to say that to me. You don't get to tell me that when everything keeps changing. I'm supposed to just accept that those strangers are my family. No! My family is here! These people. This place. You. I will not loose my family because of some strangers who weren't even looking for me. I don't trust them" She yelled at me. "But you trust us?" I asked. Keeping my voice soft as I cautiously approached her. I just wanted to calm her down. To let her know she was always safe with me. That I would never let them take her. "I'm trusting you." He voice came out as a whisper as she looked up into my eyes. All her anger had vanished only to be replaced with fear. She was scared of loosing us, just like Dad had said. "I'm not going anywhere, Roe. No one will take you away from me." Slowly, I reached out to touch her cheek but she whacked my hand out of the way and stepped back. She closed her eyes for a second before she reached up and held her hands over my eyes. "I can't think when you look at me like that." She snapped and I had no idea what to do. I wanted to smile that I had such an effect on her. I wanted to wrap her in my arms and never let her go. "Just...don't move. Don't say a word." Instead of what I wanted to do, I did as I was told. Which surprised me. My body listening to her before my mind even caught up. What was going on in that head of hers right now? She took a shaky breath and stepped closer. I felt her fingers on my chest and her heart picked up it's pace. She carefully placed her head on my chest, just over my heart. A heavy sigh escaped her lips as she leaned into me, her arms wrapping around me. "Hold her!" Demon excitedly yelled in my head. "I can't" I gritted back. But I so badly wanted to. "Ask her then? She just wants the choice." Maybe he was right, as usual. Before I could ask, I felt her move. Her hand sliding up to hold my cheek. Her thumb lightly grazing my lips. Oh Goddess, she was driving me insane. It took everything in me not to move but I could feel my breath hitch in my throat as she slowly pulled my head down to hers. Our lips touched softly, shakily and only for a second. But it was pure bliss. The first time she had kissed me and I just wanted more of her. "Damien?" My eyes opened to find hers watching me. Conflicting emotions danced across them in a dizzying array that I couldn't keep up with.  Roe's P.O.V. "I'm yours. I always have been, Roe." My eyes closed, trying to hold back the tears that threatened at his words. He said them with so much honesty. He wrapped one of his strong arms around my waist, gently pulling me closer to him. Julie's words had run though my head on a loop and now with those men claiming to be my family, I decided I would make the choice. I would trust him first and hope he would then tell me what he was hiding. Hope he wouldn't hurt me and let me stay here. With him. A part of me so badly wanted to trust him. "Roe." His thumb drew circles on my cheeks and I couldn't help but lean into his touch. "Roe." His voice was soft and low. Taking a deep breath I opened my eyes and look up at him. I saw that strange emotion again. Shining like a warm energy though his hypnotising green eyes. He ran his thumb along my bottom lip causing me to gasp before he gently brought his lips to mine. This wasn't like our usual kisses. This was soft and gentle and exactly what I needed right now. It felt like home. He felt like home.
