"Stupid ball." I muttered as I failed once again to even hit it. I threw the club down in frustration which only made the three idiots I was with laugh more. How had I gotten myself into this? I was on a double date as Amy wasn't quite ready to be alone with Warren yet. She felt like she needed a buffer so she didn't make any mistakes and she kept asking me if it was going well. How the hell was I supposed to know? As far as I knew, this was the first date I had ever been on. I didn't even want to be here. It was entirely awkward as I had no idea what to do and it was only this morning that I had decided to trust Damien. Though it was obvious that Warren completely dotted on Amy already. She was already wearing his jacket to keep her warm and he never left her side for long. It was so adorable to watch them together. But right now their laughter was annoying me more. "Stop laughing at me! This is impossible with a cast on!" I pouted, crossing my arms. It was a stupid game that I just couldn't play.
"Let me help you." Damien smirked as he approached me. Picking up my club, he put it back in my hand and moved me to the correct position near the ball.
"What are you doing?" I glared at him.
"Helping." He smiled, that lopsided grin that I loved so much. "Now eyes on the ball." He said firmly and I reluctantly did as I was told. He moved behind me, his body moulding to mine as he leaned over me. Placing my hands correctly on the club he then placed his over the top. We were impossibly close. Swallowing hard, I tried to calm my now erratic breathing. I could feel his breath on my ear, his chest moving against my back. The heat from his body instantly warmed me up and set my stomach into flips. I watched as he gently pulled the club back and then swung.
I let out a gasp as the ball moved and we watched it head through the windmill and into the hole. Squealing I jumped up and down. I was so excited that I hadn't realised I was hugging Damien, my arms around his neck until his laughter broke through as he spun me around. My breath caught in my throat and I could feel my cheeks heating up as he slowly put me back on the ground.
"I...I uhm." I stuttered, letting him go and stepping back. "Thanks." I mumbled, tucking my hair behind my ear.
"Anytime, Princess." There was that damned crooked grin again. Putting his arm around my waist as we walked behind the couple. Watching them carefully, I noticed they were walking the same way. Except Amy was leaning into Warrens hold. Is that what I should be doing? It seemed so natural for them. Carefully I pressed my shoulder against Damien, testing whether it was right or not. His arm tightened its grip on me slightly. I looked up to gage his reaction and found him smiling brightly down at me, causing my cheeks to flush. He leaned down, pressing his lips to my head. "So beautiful." He mumbled against my hair and my already erratic heart beat somehow sped up more. What was he doing to me?
Damien's P.O.V.
"Alpha!" An annoying voice broke through my attempt to sleep. Sleeping was difficult anyway without your Mate, but after today it was practically impossible. The date had gone so well. So much laughter and she had blushed so much. It was clear that she had no idea what to do, but she had allowed me to touch her all night. Her hand was so small in mine and I could still feel her gentle lips on mine from our goodnight kiss at her bedroom door. "Alpha!" Jace repeated.
"What!" I growled back.
"Roe's remembering something. It's a bad one." f**k! Following her scent I rushed down the stairs, coming to a halt in the kitchen doorway. Jace was stood next me as my eyes looked at Roe's back. She was stood by the fridge, a knife shaking in her hand. her breathing was ragged and her pulse was impossibly fast.
"No one can get near her. Do you think she's remembering.. that?" Jace asked, worry creeping into his voice.
"Probably." Cautiously, I approached her. "Roe? You're safe." The knife was shaking more in her hand as I reached her, her breathing was shallow and her heart beat had sped up dramatically. I carefully placed my hands on her arms. When she didn't react so I slowly moved my hand down her arm and gently took the knife from her, placing it out of reach. Turning her around to face me, I cupped her face in my hands.
"I...I killed them." Tears brimmed her glazed eyes as she looked at nothing.
"Roe, you had no choice. It was them or you. Look at me, Princess." Instead she looked down as the tears slipped free.
"Two of them, Damien. I'm a...a mur..."
"No you are not. Listen to me, Roe. Those men would have carried on doing....horrible things to you and from the looks of that prison we found you in, it wasn't the first time they had done it. If you hadn't have saved yourself, they would have found another victim. Roe, I wish I had gotten to you sooner. I wish I had killed them instead of you." A gasp escaped her lips as her wide eyes shot to mine.
"You...you would..."
"I will always protect you. I will always keep you safe." I interrupted, snaking my arm around her waist.
"I..I uhm..." She mumbled before a sizzling sound grabbed her attention. "Oh no, the milk!" My attention snapped to the pan boiling over too as she tried to move towards it.
"Let me." I spoke softly before I moved. Removing the pan from the heat. "What were you doing anyway?"
"I couldn't sleep. So I came to make some warm milk." She shrugged as she took the milk from the fridge. Tears still streaked her face but her breathing and pulse were returning to normal.
"And chocolate cake?" I asked, as I noticed the cake behind her, raising one eyebrow as she looked away sheepishly. "Come on, sit down and I'll finish this." I gestured to the stools and began heating a fresh pan of milk.
"But don't you want to go back to bed?" She asked as she sat down. I just shrugged.
"No, I couldn't sleep either." I replied. Although she was the reason I couldn't sleep. Ever since that night after the ball I have struggled to sleep and I have noticed Roe had been struggling too.
A comfortable silence filled the room as we drank and ate. Admittedly, I hadn't had warm milk since I was a pup and I had forgotten how relaxing it was. Or maybe it was being sat so close to my Mate who was purposely pressing her leg against mine. Yawning, Roe picked up her empty plate and cup in one hand and took them to the dishwasher. Returning to me she suddenly looked shy.
"Thankyou, for everything. Goodnight." She quickly kissed my cheek and turned to leave.
"Oh no you don't." I spoke as I quickly swopped her into my arms.
"Damien!" She gasped. "Put me down! What are you doing?" She yelled as she hit my chest. I just smiled down at her and held her tighter to stop her wiggling. She wasn't getting away from me tonight.
"No way in hell are you sleeping alone tonight." I stated as I carried her up the stairs.
"Damien! Put me down!" She yelled again, hitting my chest. Though it was clear she wasn't trying to hurt me.
"No." That adorable human growl of hers just made me smile more as she gave up fighting me and huffed, crossing her arms instead. When I walked us past her bedroom door, her eyes shot me in panic. "Trust me." I said softly as I smiled at her. She seemed reluctant but then she growled again and nodded. I guess she realised I was right, she shouldn't be alone tonight.
Shifting my hold on her a little, I opened my bedroom door and watched Roe's face as her eyes went wide. Dark grey walls, thick black carpet and two red chairs in front of a mahogany fireplace. A huge four poster bed with red sheets, dominated the room. My little sanctuary. Though I had recently added two bookcases either side of the fireplace, for my little Mate.
"Do you like it?" I whispered in her ear. Without looking at me she nodded still looking around the room. Gently, I her placed on the bed and pulled the covers over her before climbing in the other side. Leaning over, I took her face in mine and looked deeply into her eyes. Those stunning hazel eyes that held me captive every time I looked at her. Softly, I pressed my lips to hers for another goodnight kiss. I watched, smiling, as the blush creeped up her face as I laid down on my back. I held my arm out as an invitation, hoping she would accept it. Her blush grew deeper as she looked away. Taking a deep breath Roe closed the distance between us and laid her head on my chest. We both sighed in contentment at the contact. My hand gently stroked her side as we both drifted off.
Roe's P.O.V.
Stretching my limbs, I tried to wake myself up from what seemed to be the most amazing sleep I had ever had. That salty, fresh smell I loved filled the room. But that was odd as my room never smelled of it. Finally managing to open my eyes I found I was not in my bed. Memories of last night suddenly came flooding back. I was alone in Damien's bed. Why would he leave me alone here? Did he not enjoy it as much as I had? The clock on his bedside table told me it was nearly lunch. Of course he would already be awake, not everyone slept as much as I did. Maybe that's all it was, he simply just got up before me. Though I couldn't help but think that there was more too it. I couldn't help but worry.
Once I was dressed, I headed downstairs and found the place eerily quiet. Where was everyone? When I reached the bottom I could something going on outside. What was going on? Panic was beginning to grip me and I had no idea why. With a shaky hand I opened the front door and stepped out onto the porch only to find a group of half naked men and huge dogs watching the treeline, their backs to me. No, they weren't dogs, those were wolves! Like the one that tried to attack the children. What the hell was going on? Out of the trees stomped a very naked and bloody Damien, the tails of five dead wolves in his hands. Their lifeless bodies dragging through the dirt behind him. Stopping in front of the group, he held them up by the tails.
"No one invades my pack!" He growled. Howls and shouts erupted from the men and I couldn't help the scream that escaped my lips as my vision started to blur.
