It was quiet in the school that afternoon. Too quiet.
Aria, Zara, Mina, and Leo had slipped away from the main halls, moving toward the section of the building no one ever used—the old wing. Dust hung in the air, and the faint scent of old books and chalk tickled Aria’s nose.
“This place gives me the creeps,” Zara whispered, hugging her backpack tighter. “It’s like we’re trespassing into a ghost story.”
“You are,” Mina said sharply. “But at least it’s not as crowded as the cafeteria.”
Aria’s eyes flicked over the faded walls. Something glimmered near the base of a pillar—a faint golden rune only she could see. Her heart skipped.
“There,” she whispered, pointing.
Leo stepped closer, expression serious. “Good. That’s old magic. Someone left it intentionally. Follow it, carefully.”
The Hidden Library
The rune pulsed faintly as Aria traced it with her fingers. Suddenly, the wall shifted, sliding aside to reveal a narrow staircase spiraling downward.
“Uh… I don’t think we’re supposed to be here,” Zara said nervously.
“Then we’re doing it anyway,” Aria said, stepping forward.
The staircase led to a cavernous underground room filled with floating books, shelves stretching impossibly high, and glowing symbols etched into the walls. Crystals hovered in midair, casting soft golden light.
“Whoa,” Zara breathed. “This is… unreal.”
“Welcome to the Hidden Library,” Leo said, voice low. “Few humans know it exists. Fewer still can enter. And now, you’ve seen it.”
Mina’s arms were crossed, but even she looked impressed. “So… all the stuff in the hidden room before this? That was just the tip?”
“Yes,” Leo replied. “And you’ll need to learn it if you want to survive. The veil is thinner here, and some creatures might slip through at any moment.”
A First Lesson
A small, glowing creature fluttered near Aria, its wings shimmering like silver glass.
“Hello,” it whispered inside her mind. I am Lumen. I guard knowledge. You are… special.
“Special?” Aria repeated in awe.
“Yes,” the creature said. The veil-breaking allowed you to interact with magic. Few humans can. Few survive the attention it brings.
Aria glanced at her friends. Mina seemed skeptical but alert. Zara was wide-eyed, bouncing slightly. Leo… calm as ever, watching every corner of the room.
“First lesson,” Leo said. “Read the books. Observe the crystals. Interact with magic—but never underestimate it. Even a small creature can harm you if provoked.”
Tension Between Friends
Mina finally spoke. “So, Aria… do you get to decide what we do now? Or do we all just follow you around while you discover your magic?”
Aria frowned. “No. We decide together. But I am the one who saw the veil break. That matters.”
Zara groaned. “Ugh, politics already? Can’t we just… read some magical books and stay alive?”
Leo’s eyes flicked between them. “Disagreements will happen. Trust will be tested. That’s part of the journey.”
The black cat appeared again, leaping onto a shelf, silver eyes gleaming. Its presence was reassuring yet mysterious.
Aria opened a floating book, and golden letters shifted and danced across the page. Her fingers tingled as knowledge filled her mind—runic symbols, creature lore, magical warnings.
This is only the beginning, she thought.
And she knew, with a shiver, that the real test was just around the corner.
