Jason's POV
The worst part about not being able to reveal ourselves to Alex was not letting her know more about the supernatural world. For instance, she would be able to detect other supernatural beings that are near her. However, since she has very little knowledge of the supernatural world, she cannot do that. I know for a fact that the previous school she attended was multi-species, but she had no idea at all. I wanted so badly to tell her everything about her past and why we had been hiding her for 16 years, but that was not my place and hopefully, we can get her back so that she can meet her father. After calling Alpha Fredrick, I knew I would need to tell Margaret and that was going to be hard, apart from telling Alejandro. I didn't know exactly how to start the conversation so I decided to try tracking down the last known location where Alex was. I walked for a good 30 to 40 minutes before I came to the top of a small hill that overlooked the valley below. I started to look around when I noticed something shiny laying close to the base of one of the nearby trees. I picked up the bracelet that Margaret and I gave Alex for her fifth birthday.
~Flashback~
Today is Alex's fifth birthday. We asked her if she would like a party and she said no. She only wanted her best friend Abby to come over and stay so that they could be the only two celebrating. We agreed because she was such an adorable child. Besides, Abby was one of the best people to have around since she is a vampire. When Abby got to the house, the girls took off towards the treehouse that I built for Alex.
"You know that Alex is probably going to start showing signs that she is gaining her powers." Abby's father, Maverick Valentin, said to me.
"Yes I know, we have been closely watching her to make sure that when she starts showing signs we can get it under control so no one can find her and cause her harm." I said, looking in the direction that the girls ran off, disappearing into the woods a short distance from our house. Ten minutes later, we hear the girls scream for help.
Running frantically in the direction of the scream, Maverick and I found a hooded guy holding onto Abby and Alex. Neither girl was crying, they just stood there not knowing what to do. Just then, a second guy stepped forward from behind a nearby tree holding a gun in my direction.
" Give me the girls and we will leave in peace. No one has to die today as long as you comply with what I want." said the second guy.
"You will never take our daughters anywhere." Maverick yells back at him.
"Oh, I think I will. You see I'm the one with the upper hand in this situation." He spits back, waving the gun in the air.
"You think a mere gun is going to scare us?" Maverick says, trying to contain his laughter.
The two men standing in front of us are nothing more than humans who are so naive that they think we will just give up because he is holding a flashy gun in front of our faces. Just then, the man pulls the trigger and a bullet pierces my left shoulder, causing me to stumble backward a little bit. I looked at Alex and saw gold swirling around the iris of her eyes replacing the bright green her eyes usually show. Suddenly, both of the men fell to their knees choking on air. They frantically start grabbing the air to remove whatever is causing them to choke, but there is nothing there. At first, I think that it is Margaret who is causing them to act this way as it requires a lot of power to conjure that type of spell. Upon closer inspection, I realize that Alex is still standing in the same place whispering a chant over and over. Her powers have finally started to manifest, which is great but at the same time scary because we need to be more cautious now.
W-w-what i-s ha-hapen-ing to u-s." said the guy with the gun in a very strangled breath. He looked at us for an answer like we would help him out of this predicament that he himself caused.
Maverick leaned in very close to the guy and whispered "That would be the powers that be telling you not to mess with people you know nothing about. For example, I am a vampire, my friend here is a witch and our girls and also the same as us. We are more powerful without any weapons than you are with that pathetic gun. Who has the upper hand now?"
The guy's eyes widened at the realization that he had gotten himself into a very bad situation where he wasn't leaving alive.
"Alex, I need you to relax. Please come help your father get back to the house. I will take care of these two." Maverick said, walking over to Alex, trying to get her to release her hold on the two guys. Finally, after another two minutes, Alex releases the hold she has on them and they both fall on their faces out of pure exhaustion. She rushes over to me and asks if I'm okay, then we start walking back to the house where Margaret has the medicine to help heal my shoulder.
"Abby, are you coming to the house with us?" Alex asks.
" I'll be there as soon as I help my daddy." she said while looking strangely at one of the men.
As we are walking into the house, we hear the two men screaming and then there is silence. I'm pretty sure I know what happened, but I will not ask Maverick about it because it is now being taken care of. Margaret came rushing over to me with a concerned look on her face, asking what had happened in such a short amount of time. Alex told her that two bad men tried to take her and Abby and that they were stopped by myself and maverick. She then said that when the person shot me she got really mad and kept hoping that the men would choke on air. She kept repeating that to herself over and over again until Maverick was able to get her out of her trance. Margaret looked at me and she immediately knew what she needed to do.
"Alex, your father and I have a special gift for you. You have to promise us that you will never take it off. It will help protect you from bad people who want to hurt you, like the men just a little while ago."
"Okay mommy, I'll always wear it." Alex said with excitement in her voice.
