Two tides of Hunger
She was absolutely famished. Delicacies danced in her head; Chinese, Mexican, Italian. They all sounded amazing but right now she would settle for any of them. It had been two long weeks since her last meal, and she was starting to feel sluggish, a deadly indicator that hibernation was looming near. Her fat stores were depleted, her metabolism at its slowest setting to conserve energy. Desperation spurred her closer to the rocks, a risk she nor many others dared take. Married to her pangs of hunger was annoyance, usually someone of her status didn't have to worry about trivial things such as where her food was coming from, it was always there, served to her by a nameless servant. Running away definitely had it's draw backs.
"Princes...I mean Coral, I really think we should stop here." Marin whined at her, his eyes black and pleading. Coral sighed exasperated, he had followed her when she snuck out, insisting it was too dangerous for her to be on her own, yet here he was the one being a scardy pus.She would have sent him away if the bonds of their friendship didn't dictate her emotions. It didn't matter he was her maids son, they grew up together and she loved him like a brother, hated him like one sometimes too. His slip up of her name grated against her ears, she was used to being called Princess by everyone but him, it was a habit he picked up over the past few years and she loathed it.
"Stay here then and be a Tuna, I'll bring you something back." Coral teased him before flicking her powerful fin, propelling her forward at a speed she knew he couldn't keep up with. In all honesty she wanted to be alone not only with her thoughts but with her food as well. They were both likely starving but as a male he naturally could last much longer without than she could, so it would be scraps for him.

Rake watched as his beloved Yacht became farther and farther from him. Sighing deeply, he knew it was a sacrifice between one love for another. Boat for carnal pleasures, something in the moment he was very hungry for. He eyed the chatty red-head next to him, her pixie cut giving him ample view of a long slender neck, not that it was the part of her anatomy he was paying attention to. The bright red bikini, if you could call the scraps of fabric that, left very little to his imagination.
Red-head, red bikini, what was her name? Something nature related he was sure. Rain? No, maybe it was Breeze? What's-her-name, red-head, red bikini pouted at him, as she spoke in, what he assumed she thought he would find cute, a childish cadence. “I’ll be so damn happy to have my feet on land again. Seriously, I hate being out here away from, well...everything.”
“Ah, Stormy quit your boo-hooing. The Alpha doesn’t force anyone to come out to the seas. You’re just afraid to miss a party.” Rake internally thanked Brice, it would be hard to score if he couldn’t remember her name, Alpha or not. Sure, he could force her, it was his right, but it wasn’t really his style. He saw firsthand the damage that could do to a someone. He mentally shook himself; nothing would kill his hard on quicker than thoughts of his mother.
“Yeah but I mean like, why do we always have to have good parties out here in the water? On some big dumb boat?” Did she just call his majestic beautiful Queenie dumb? Suddenly he realized she was not worthy of him, or of Queenie. Rake sulked as Brice deftly navigated through the dangerous rocks that were continuously harassed by thick cruel waves, and parked them gently on the shore.
“Yo, Brice. Get Cloud out of here, arrange for a different ride for her home. I am done looking at her.” Rake callously called over his shoulder as he exited the small boat, not bothering to help either of them out, nor bothering to correctly say Stormy’s name despite knowing it now. There were other girls here tonight, sadly she was just the most attractive with loose morals. Most of the others were obnoxiously waiting to find their “Mate”. Fairy-tales told by elders to keep the youth in line, Rake knew. Mates didn’t exist, love didn’t exist.
Testy from blue balls Rake decided to remove himself from everyone else, he didn’t want to put a damper on their return to land and bomb fire by being snappy. It wasn’t their fault he wasn’t going to get any tail. Sometimes he wondered why he longed for the abyss of endless water, and vast stretches of sky. He was the only Shifter he knew of that didn’t prefer the comfort of solid land. Could he really blame Stormy for her lack luster attitude towards the sea? No, but he could blame her for insulting his dearest. Rake climbed over a jutting boulder and finally could take in the majestic sight before him. Queenie floated proud on the high waves far in the distance, the black sky and pale moon giving her a picturesque backdrop. If only he had thought to bring a camera.
“To the sea, deep with me. In the depths we ride the tide. Don’t fear, come here, come near. Your lips on mine, a promise divine. Your wishes, desires, to grant I have the power.” A voice, honeyed and sweet, sang out into the night, dragging his attention to its owner. It was a woman, her back to him but face lifted to the sky, long bright blonde hair cascading behind her, he wondered if it was possible for hair to illuminate as brightly in the night as the moon. She sat on a partially submerged rock, so only her torso was above the churning waves. Absently he wondered how she was able to stay perched as she was and didn’t get knocked over. The thought didn’t cross his mind long though, nothing mattered but seeing the face behind the lovely voice. If only she would sing forever, it was like listening to angel, maybe she was one. Rake entered the water without knowing he did, he stumbled through the night tide, not realizing he was wet, He sunk underwater, unaware he was drowning.

Coral heard him behind her, land dwellers were so loud, rustling their appendages about. How they managed to survive without constantly being eaten alive by predators was beyond her. As far as she knew, their fleshy soft bodies had no defense mechanisms. It should make her feel guilty but was to hungry to muster up such a trivial feeling. Humans were not entirely common food for her kind but rather, fatty treats that weren't really good for you. Something to occasionally indulge in, or like in her case, something to fully fill you up when you’ve started running on empty. The ones of old used to dine on them much more frequently but through interbreeding, human emotions were bred into her people and thus sympathies towards the pathetic creatures developed. She saw him dip under the water, eyes glazed over in trance, and had to keep herself from squealing in delight, doing so would break her song and her spell. That would give her prey a chance at escape and sign her hibernation in stone, and she was not in a safe place for a long sleep.
She too dipped underwater to further inspect her meal. He was handsome for a foot kicker she found herself noticing. Which surprised her, she’d never paid attention to how one of her meals looked before. There was just something about the way his sand colored eyes, the glaze from the spell fading, bulged and how the veins in his neck throbbed as his mouth gasped in air desperately that made her attracted. She drew closer, her hunger ebbing in the light of her curiosity. The food didn’t struggle anymore, but looked to be resting, save for the slight blue tint forming under his tanned skin. Coral held her own, milk white arm up to his, enjoying the contrast of colors and size differences. He was big, big enough to feed three or four of her kind, and not much fat on him, so he’d be considered a healthy eat. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, so she could clearly see the broad expanse of his chest, and rippling muscles. He was, she mused, magnificent. Was this why the old ones interbred? They found specimens such as this? Felt a pull inside that made them want to wrap themselves around the human and breed with them? Already Coral longed to press her lips on his to initiate the coupling.
Before she knew what she was doing Coral had pulled him from the water, as best she could, the male was heavy, and was breathing air into his lungs. Lucky for her she had both gills and lungs, so she could choose water or land. Her people rarely went onto land, too long and it led to madness or death. It wasn’t until he started spitting up water that she had realized what she had done. What madness had caused her to do such a thing? Did he cast his own Siren song on her? The how's and what's didn’t matter now. She used the last bit of energy she had to save his life. Coral felt sleep, deep and seductive, slip over her like a gentle lapping wave. With will power alone, before she fully went under, she changed her fins to match the foot kicker. It was dangerous to be left unprotected from humans, though they had no defense mechanisms, they had weapons and she had heard stories of them killing her kind for the magical properties they could extract from their bodies. He would simply think like him, she was a human washed up on shore. Yes. She saw him go under and saved him, that would be her story.
Maybe he would feed her, was the last thought she had before the darkness fully took her.
