Chapter 48

~ Song ~ Play With Fire - Sam Tinnesz ~ A small crease line appeared between Nicholas eyebrows as the minutes passed, my words and panicked state sinking into his mind. He stood up, holding my hand and pulling me to my feet with him. "You think this painting is of you?" He asked in search of clarity. I swallowed nervously. "I know it sounds strange Master Nico but, yes. I think thats me." "I've heard stranger." He huffed out, running his hand through his hair. "Eat and regain your strength." He motioned towards two bowls on the table, pushing my shoulder gently to move me towards them. I took a seat at the table and stared at the bowl of food, my stomach churned just at the thought of eating but I knew I had to. Nicholas kept his eyes on me while we ate in silence. I could feel the painting behind me as if it had a thousand eyes drilling holes in the back of my head. It made me squirm. "Why do you think that painting is you Fairy?" Nicholas asked almost cautiously, gauging my reaction. "I um.." I chewed in my bottom lip roughly. "I had a memory surface." Something seemed to click in his mind as his eyes brightened slightly before they darkened. "Of that scene?" I nodded. "I had never remembered it before but when I looked at the painting it was like it triggered something in my mind."  He stayed quiet, his eyes flicking to the painting and remaining there for a few agonisingly long minutes. He didn't ask anymore questions regarding the painting and for that I was grateful, if it was possible I wanted to push it to the farthest corner in my mind.  I walked out of the bathroom, spotting Nicholas sitting on the bed with a book in his hands. My steps halted as I glanced around the room. Nicholas's looked up from his book, raising his eyebrows at me.  "What is it now?"  "Uh.." I pursed my lips. "Where am I to sleep?"  "On the bed Fairy." He said with an incredulous tone. "Where else?"  "..But.."  "But what?" He asked, closing the book and placing it in his lap. "I thought I already told you that you are to sleep in my bed from now on."  "But.. Master I am a slave." I murmured uncomfortably. "I shouldn't be sleeping in a bed beside you."  His eyes narrowed, his jaw clenching almost undetectably. "You should be doing every and anything I tell you to do Fairy." He said. "Now, get in bed."  I hesitated, my fingers fumbling together. The firm look in his eyes made me reluctantly walk towards the bed, sitting on the edge before slowly climbing under the covers. I remained as far away from Nicholas as I could without falling off the bed.  "Good." He muttered behind me.  He continued to read while I tried desperately to lull myself to sleep. Everytime I closed my eyes I was afraid I'd see those images again. I wasn't sure how long I tossed and turned for, unable to ignore the painting on the wall. I hadn't even noticed when Nicholas had put his book down and lay down, also attempting to sleep.  Knowing the painting was on the wall staring at me made me far too nervous. I opened my eyes when I felt the bed move, peering through the dark as Nicholas's figure walked to the bathroom. He walked back out with a towel in his hands, causing me to furrow my eyebrows.  He approached the painting, throwing the towel over it and covering it before climbing back in bed. I rolled over, staring into his eyes.  "Why did you do that?" I asked quietly.  "I can't sleep peacefully when there is a Fairy tossing and turning all night now can I?"  The corner of his lips curled up slightly but it didn't feel genuine.  "Thank you." I murmured softly.  "Go to sleep Fairy. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow."  "What's happening tomorrow?" I asked, pulling the blanket up to my chin.  "You'll see."  He closed his eyes, a small smile on his lips. I stared at him for a few more seconds before closing my eyes, releasing a steady breath and letting sleep consume me.  ~~~Third POV ~~~ Nicholas stood in front of the painting, the towel that was once covering it in his hand. His eyes flicked to the sleeping girl before returning to the child in the painting. Despite the age difference Nicholas's couldn't help but notice the similarities between the two.  However he didn't fail to notice how the child's hair had a golden tint to it and her eyes a deep blue, whether those were edits the artist made or not, Nicholas didn't know.  He stepped closer, his eyes narrowing on the small cursive writing engraved on the golden frame. 'The Defender of Light.' He tossed the words around in his mind, his eyebrows knitting together with frustration.  It seemed to be question after question with Faye and that was mildly irritating to someone who was use to having the answers. When he heard Fayes heart beat changed he placed the towel back over the painting and stepped away, glancing as she stirred.  Her eyebrows had creased together, a look of distress covering her face. Nicholas walked towards her, gently placing his hand on her burning forehead, momentarily relaxing her features.  "Fairy." He removed his hand, watching as the action caused her to stir more. "Wake up Fairy. Things to do, people to kill."  Her eyes fluttered open, glancing up at the red eyes peering down at her. She slowly registered the words he spoke.  "Who are we killing?" She asked in a soft voice.  Nicholas huffed out a laugh, his usual devilish smirk decorating his face as he walked towards the table.  Faye slowly sat up, glancing outside to see the sun barely rising. As the memories of last night flooded her mind, her eyes found their way to the painting still covered by the towel. Though her heartbeat quickened at the memory, the painting had no affect on her while covered. She released a shaky breath, standing from the bed and walking into the bathroom.  Nicholas had watched Faye's reaction, a thousand things going through his busy mind. He pulled out his colt revolver, cleaning and reloading it. Faye walked back out, her eyes instantly going to the revolver in his hands.  "Are we actually killing people?" She asked.  "Not people." He answered, smirking at her. "Berserks."  Faye shivered as the memories of her last and first berserk hunt surfaced in her mind. It was terrifying but exhilarating at the same time. She noticed the glint in Nicholas's eyes as he stared at her, wondering exactly what he was planning.  They ate quickly, leaving the inn just as the sun rose. Achlys was saddled and waiting when they made it out to the stables. Nicholas's grabbed Faye by the waist, hoisting her up onto the saddle.  She held onto Achlys mane, brushing her fingers through her fur. Nicholas climbed on, grabbing the reins and kicking Achlys on.  "Why did you name her Achlys?" Faye asked while they were walking through the forest.  "Do you know what it means?" He asked, his eyes darting around the dark forest.  Faye shook her head softly. "I do not."  "Achlys means death mist." He said. "She is the personification of the mist that covers ones eyes when death is upon them."  "Let me guess, you're death." Faye said, a sarcastic tint to her tone.  Nicholas chuckled. "Exactly."  They travelled for a few hours before they finally saw the first house in the distance. Like last time despite it being day the village was surrounded in a thick fog, keeping the light from breaking through.  Goosebumps rose on Fayes skin, an eerie feeling floating in the air. Nicholas stopped Achlys a distance away from the village, climbing off before helping Faye off. When a bird landed on a branch in the tree making it snap, Faye jumped slightly, unconsciously grabbing onto Nicholas's sleeve.  He glanced down at her, shaking his head. "It was a bird Fairy."  He tied Achlys to the tree before treading forward, Faye following closely behind. The snow that covered the ground looked grey from the lack of light. Fear filled Faye as the walked along the cobblestone path going through the village but so did adrenaline.  She took a deep breath, fighting off the chills that were beginning to consume her. Nicholas didn't fail to notice Fayes spiked heartbeat, slowly down a step to accommodate Fayes short legs.  His head snapped to the side when he heard a floorboard creak. He watched as Faye noticed something in the house too, her wide eyes set on the open doorway.  "Do you think ones in there?" Nicholas asked. She nodded her head, glancing up into his red eyes. "Yes."  He smirked, his fangs peeking out from his lips as he walked forward cautiously. The steps creaked as they walked up them, making Faye wince at the horrible noise. Nicholas was unbothered, set on killing all the berserks in the village.  The house was dark, he could see with his vampire eyes but Faye was barely able to see a few feet in front of her. His eyes scanned the room, noticing the broken and rotting furniture littered around. Faye gasped behind him when red eyes appeared in front of them. The berserk screeched deafeningly, lunging forward with its rotting arm outstretched, aiming for Nicholas's heart.  Nicholas didn't flinch once, his hand shooting out to grab the berserks arm while his other hand pulled the dagger from his coat. His eyes brightened immensely as he lodged the dagger into the berserks heart.  The thrill rushed through him, energizing every last bit of his soul. Staring into the eyes of the berserk as the life drained from its eyes was euphoric to Nicholas, it was a feeling he'd never get bored of.  He pulled the dagger out harshly, pushing the berserk back and letting the body fall limply on the floor with a loud thud. He wiped the black blood off his dagger, glancing over his shoulder at Faye who hadn't moved an inch.  Faye was frozen as she stared into Nicholas's shining red eyes. She couldn't tell if her eyes had just gotten use to the dark room or if the brightness his eyes held had lightened up the entire room.  She could see the intense intoxication behind his eyes and it fueled the fear in her. She had never seen someone so high off killing something.  His lips curled up at Faye's reaction, he didn't care, it was a fairly typical reaction he had seen many times before. He left Faye standing there as he quickly surveyed the rest of the house.  "On to the next." He smirked at Faye as he walked outside.  Faye could barely keep up with his walk now as he ventured through the village looking for his next kill. He had another reason for wanting to hunt the berserks, one he had temporarily forgotten about, too caught up in the thrill.  If possible it seemed the fog had thickened around them, the eerie silence becoming deafeningly loud to Faye. They had hundreds of eyes peering down at them through the fog, eyes they couldn't sense.  Everything consumed by the fog was a shade of grey, there was no life there anymore. The life that once decorated the village had long been murdered, leaving only rot and death to remain. That was the inevitable to any village tainted by berserks.  When they rounded a corner Nicholas's steps faltered, causing the unsuspecting Faye to walk into him. She stumbled back, tripping over her own feet and heading for the ground.  Before her body could hit the ground, Nicholas's had grabbed her and pulled her up right, giving her an unimpressed look.  "Why'd you stop?" She whispered, glancing up at him.  He removed his hand from her arm, glancing behind him. "There's one down there." He said.  "How do you know?" She asked.  "I smell its blood." He said in a sinister tone, making Faye shiver. "Stay behind me."  Faye obliged, not wanting to get in the way of his warpath. She followed him warily, taking soft and careful steps.  Everything happened too quickly for Faye to register. A berserk shot out from the fog towards Nicholas, catching even him off guard for a split second. The ear splitting screech filled Fayes ears, making her wince from the headache it gave her.  Nicholas disappeared into the fog while he fought the berserk, leaving Faye frozen in her spot. Her breathing became loud and uneven, her eyes darting around. She could hear them fighting but had no idea what direction they were in, she had become completely disoriented.  When she saw movement in front of her she sucked in a breath, praying that Nicholas would appear from the fog.  Her breath caught in her throat when she realised it wasn't Nicholas but another berserk. She stumbled backwards as it stalked forward, a guttural growl echoing through the street.  The berserk screeched at her, moving its head side to side as it sniffed the air. It lunged forward. Faye gasped and turned, she didn't make it very far before her body was slammed onto the ground, sliding until her back hit the side of a house.  She groaned, wincing at the shooting pain coursing through her body from the impact. The berserk stood above her, its soulless eyes locked on her weak body.  She glanced up, her body shaking with fear. The berserk shot its arm out, grabbing her by the neck and lifting her against the wall. She gasped out, her hands clawing at the hand crushing her throat.  Her feet were well off the ground, kicking wildly as the air failed to enter her lungs. She was staring death in the face and it was ugly.  She heard a sickening crunching sound, unsure of where it came from until the berserks hand fell from her throat. She dropped on the ground, unable to land on her feet. Nicholas stood behind the berserk, his hand lodged in its back.  He pulled his hand out roughly, dropping the berserks heart on the ground. The berserks lifeless body fell to the side, allowing Faye to stare into Nicholas's electric eyes.  "I think I should have a weapon." Faye murmured, rubbing her fingers over her aching throat. Nicholas stared down at her, a smirk forming. "You have a weapon Fairy." She gave him an incredulous look before taking his outstretched hand. He pulled her up effortlessly, making her stumble into him. "Me." ~~~~Authors Note~~~~ I've been struggling to write for some reason, just can't seem to get into the flow of it. Not the biggest fan of this chapter, it was better in my mind but can't win them all. Third POV is my way of being able to do Nicholas's pov without it being solely him, if you get what I mean. I always planned on this story to be mainly Faye's pov and do third pov for everyone else, it just makes it easier to write everyone's thoughts and emotions at once rather than having to jump to all the different pov's I could have. Anyway, hope you enjoyed :)
