Chapter 18: Playful days (Part 1)

Inside the captain's office. I’m currently asked to stay with her for the moment.
“Here some cookies.”
Said the captain secretary Lily.
“Thank you.”
I accepted the offer and take one cookie then take a small bite. Upon biting, I notice how its sweetness is just exact and its texture is just right.
This is what I call a great cookie.
My eyes were sparkling and Lily already noticed that I like it. She smiled at me and leave the room.
In the room, Only myself and Captain Yuri. Captain Yuri get the item called a Status card. It’s an item that identifies the user's status. Marry already told Captain Yuri that I have a tremendous amount of magic, maybe she is just checking.
“Sorry for calling you here suddenly, but I have to check you're status Mayu. If you a runaway noble you should immediately return to your family…”
Captain Yuri said.
We’re still on that.
“...Also, Marry said about you having some kind of memory loss. Maybe your suffering from amnesia because of some sort of accident. In any case, you're going to be reported as a missing person. I’m sure your family is worried about you.”
“Umm… Sorry Captain Yuri, but I have to say my apology.”

I averted my eye’s from Captain Yuri and explain everything to her. I explain why I lie to Marry and Rin that I have memory loss.
Captain Yuri stays calm and drinks her tea.
“You're basically saying your an adventurer from another country and washed away in this fort.”
“Not exactly like that… But it’s like that.”
Well, a country called Japan doesn’t exist in this world.
“I lie to them to show that I have the abilities of an adventurer.”
“According to Marry and Rin, you perform magic that exceeded a normal child. Anyway hold this card and focus your magic. This will show your status.”
Captain Yuri hand over the status card. Upon receiving it. I stare at it and think. How I’m going to focus my magic on it? Anyway, like in using magic. I guess it will work the same. Imagining my magic flowing to the card. The card glows up brightly that nearly illuminate the whole room.
Characters started appearing in the cad and my status was shown.

This card works like the status check, but it only shows the skills. It can’t show the abilities and my titles. It’s a good thing. I have some titles that are exaggerating, to begin with. When it’s seen by someone I feel embarrassed.
Looking at captain Yuri. I can tell immediately that she is strong.
With my curiosity. I sued Status check to Captain Yuri.
[Cannot be identified.]
Eh? Cannot be identified? This is my first time seeing this window show in my vision. Cannot be identified, meaning she’s super strong and our level gap is too huge.
She sure got that aura.
“You're level 46 and you have many skills. I guess you're not really an ordinary little girl. I’m starting to believe that you are an adventurer. Then, why you're floating in the sea on that day.”
“I don’t know what’s the reason exactly. Everything turns white and I wake up here. I’m worried to Retto and others.”

I didn’t know the Retto is this popular.

I said as I stood up with high spirit.
Captain Yuri look at my face. She then takes a sip of her tea and replied:
“A reason to live? I can read people's presence and I can feel that you're not very harmful. But still, I’m impressed seeing your status. You exceeded Rin and Marry. Those two are some of the most powerful adventurers in Elesis Fort. Since knowing you a lot better now. I will let you live in this fort for a while. I suggest visiting the guild and becoming an official adventurer there. Let’s meet in the guild house tomorrow.”
Captain Yuri said and then o back to her work.
I leave the office satisfied with the result of our conversation.
Grindelia is the city Retto came from. If I go there I might get some information about him. Maybe, Retto goes back to his country with Lumina and Kuroe.
I will take care of that in the future. For now, I’m going to find my new home.
In the following days.
The moment Captain Yuri finds out that I'm homeless. She offered me some vacant lot in the west part of the fort. There is an abandoned small house. The house looks ruined and plants started crawling on its walls. I don’t have the time to complain and accepted it.
I can’t live in Rin’s home forever. Rin is pretty sad when I said that I’m leaving.
I’m sorry Rin, but your little sister is growing up.
I started cleaning the house and make It comfortable to sleep with.
“Okay, I finally made it. This is my home. I can finally have a decent home and life in this world. This is making me really happy.”
I’m starting to cry about this achievement.
“Are you okay?”
Asked by the girl that lives beside my house.
As I turned my head I saw Meily’s face.
“Ah?!”
We are shocked after seeing each other.

“The herb girl!”
“Herb girl? That’s rude I have a name. It’s Meily, my mother give me that name and I’m proud of it. Come inside mother is making a feast.”
“You're a mother?”
I thought her mother is bedridden.
I stand still and process things, Meily then opened the door and turns her head toward me.
“Came inside.”
“Okay.”
I came inside their house and find a pretty-looking woman. I see this is Meily’s mother. She is pretty and cute in her age. I see that makes sense. Meily is very cute too. It’s a mother-like daughter.
“You met another friend?”
“No, she’s the new neighbor. She’s also a magic-user. I saw her use amazing magic. She uses it and defeats a king slime.”
“That’s amazing for someone in her age. She must be a genius.”
“That’s right! You’re a genius.”
I’m flattered by what she’s saying. Well, I’m not really a genius. I just have a rough start and desperate to survive. But I do appreciate your praise.
Marry said that Meily’s mother is sick but looking at her now. I guess she is fine.
“Mother, did you find a work today?”
“Well, still no good but the vegetable shop told me that I can part-time for a while. Let us do our best for our future. The guild also told me that you're not attending school and going in the dangerous forest alone. Don’t do that next time, you must ask some adventurers to accompany you. Well, this little girl over here might be in another case.”
Meily’s mother then serves me some bread and soup.
“I’m not that good… I’m just a newbie. I know someone far greater than me. He can one-shot a dragon with his sword. He's also cool-looking but not that cool. He is rude and has a sharp tongue but really kind. His kindness is very hard to understand through.”
I said.
Meily and her mother chuckle a laugh and said:
“You really like this person.”
“Is this boy your boyfriend? Well, you're age and his age might be questionable. That’s a problem…”
They started thinking something about me.
“No way… No way…”
Well, did I like Retto this much? No no no, that jerk should just disappear. He already has many girls in his harem I don’t want to join. Still, what is this feeling in my chest?

“No! It’s because it’s hot. I work so hard in cleaning my house I feel hot. I really nailed it cleaning my room. Besides he is a jerk. Meily’s mother smiled and look at us. She seems very happy that Meily is having a good time.
I promised that I will treat her better the next time I met her. Maybe being her friend is the way.

We look at each other messy mouths and laugh.
“Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Mayu, I’m an adventurer.”
“I’m Meily’s mother Lainy. Thank you for being kind to Meily. Meily is unfriendly and avoids people. But she is a good girl. Take care of her when I’m not with her.”
I nodded and replied.
“I will, I will treat her kindly it’s a promise.”
I said and make a peace sign.

After eating a delightful meal. Meily and I go out in the yard and started using magic. We use an empty can as our target in magic practice.
I also promise that I will help her learn magic, this situation is unavoidable and I have nothing to do.
“Wind s***h!”
I use my wind to cut down the can from far away.
“Now we can’t use that can as a target.”
“Sorry I should just use water magic.”
I said in an apologetic tone. Meily tries her hardest to find this can in the garbage cans.
“Then it may turn… Water ball!”
Magic forms from Meily’s hand and takes the form of water in a sphere shape. The water blasted toward the target. But before it reaches the can. The water goes sideways and disappeared.
Water from magic can’t be drink because it just magic. Anything that came from magic is natural to disappear after use.
“Mayu, what did you do to became an adventurer at such young age?”
“Well, it just happened. Captain Yuri give me special permission to become an adventurer. She said that I have met the requirement of being an adventurer. Maybe it’s because my level is high enough.”
“Then, what did you do to level up.”
“Kill monsters…”
Well, I’m just killing monsters and turning them to experience points.
“... Then why did you want to become an adventurer?”
I asked Meily.
“Being an adventurer will give me lots of opportunities. I can take more jobs and earn lots of money. As you see we are poor. I’m afraid my mother became sick and I don’t have money for her medications. It’s a miracle that I met a girl. She is pretty and very kind. She treated my mother in exchange for me holding to this stone.”
Meily presented me with a stone. A bluestone that slightly turning violet.
What is this thing? I check it using my status check.
[Item unable to identify.]
This window appeared again.
“That girl save my mother's life. I will fulfill my promise to her in holding this important stone.”
“You’re a nice girl.”
She’s keeping her promise. I better use her as an example. I will keep my promise in treating you nicely.
Following days passed. Meily and I became really close friends.
