Chapter 1
Marie Duke's hands trembled as she held the paintbrush, her eyes fixed on the canvas in front of her. She was lost in her art, the only place where she felt truly free. But her tranquillity was short-lived, as the sound of her father's voice pierced the air.
"Marie, we need to talk."
Marie's heart sank, sensing the gravity in his tone. She put down the brush and followed him to the living room, where her mother was already seated, her eyes red from crying.
"What is it, Dad?" Marie asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Mr. Duke took a deep breath before speaking, his words spilling out like a confession. "I've made a deal with Mr. Tyson, Marie. A deal that will secure our future."
Marie's confusion turned to horror as her father revealed the terms of the deal: an arranged marriage to Tyson Smith, the young real estate mogul, in exchange for paying off their debts.
"No, Dad, please!" Marie begged, but her father's mind was made up.
And so, Marie's fate was sealed. She was to marry a stranger, a man she had never met, to save her family from financial ruin.
Marie's mind raced as she tried to process her father's words. An arranged marriage? It sounded like something out of a fairy tale, not her real life.
"But Dad, I'm only 22," Marie protested. "I have my whole life ahead of me. Can't we find another way to pay off the debts?"
Mr. Duke shook his head. "We've tried everything, Marie. We've sold the business, the house, everything. This is the only way to ensure our future."
Marie felt a lump form in her throat. She had always known that her family was struggling financially, but she had never realized it was this bad.
"What's Mr. Tyson like?" Marie asked, trying to stall for time.
Her father hesitated before answering. "He's...a good man, Marie. He's successful, wealthy, and he's willing to take care of us."
Marie raised an eyebrow. "And what's in it for him?"
Mr. Duke looked away, avoiding her gaze. "He wants a wife, Marie. A partner to help him with his business and his social life."
Marie felt a chill run down her spine. She was being sold to the highest bidder, just like a piece of property.
Marie felt a wave of nausea wash over her. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her parents were willing to sacrifice her happiness, her freedom, just to secure their own financial future.
"I won't do it," Marie said, trying to keep her voice steady. "I won't marry some stranger just to pay off your debts."
Mr. Duke's expression turned stern. "You will do what's best for this family, Marie. You will marry Mr. Tyson and make us proud."
Marie shook her head, feeling a sense of desperation creeping in. "I won't do it," she repeated. "I'd rather die than marry someone I don't love."
Her mother stood up, her eyes flashing with anger. "You selfish girl," she spat. "You only think of yourself, never of others. Your father and I have sacrificed everything for you, and this is how you repay us?"
Marie felt a stinging sensation in her eyes as tears began to form. She knew she was being unfair, but she couldn't help how she felt.
"I'm sorry," Marie whispered, feeling defeated. "But please, don't make me do this."
Mr. Duke's expression softened slightly, but his voice remained firm. "We've made up our minds, Marie. The engagement will be announced tomorrow."
And with that, the conversation was over. Marie knew she had lost.
Marie felt like she was living in a nightmare. She couldn't believe her parents were willing to sacrifice her happiness like this. She thought about running away, but where would she go? She had no money, no friends outside of her family's social circle.
As the day went on, Marie felt like she was in a daze. She went through the motions of her routine, but her mind was elsewhere. She thought about Mr. Tyson, wondering what he was like, why he wanted to marry her.
That night, Marie couldn't sleep. She lay in bed, her mind racing with thoughts of her future. She felt trapped, like she was living in a prison of her parents' making.
As she lay there, Marie made a decision. She would find a way out of this marriage, no matter what it took. She would not go quietly into this arranged marriage.
With newfound determination, Marie drifted off to sleep, her mind already working on a plan to escape her fate.
The next morning, Marie woke up with a sense of purpose. She knew she had to act fast, before the engagement was announced and her fate was sealed.
She got out of bed and began to pace around her room, thinking about her options. She could run away, but where would she go? She could refuse to marry Mr. Tyson, but her parents would never forgive her.
As she paced, Marie's eyes landed on a small suitcase in the corner of her room. She had packed it for a school trip last year, and it was still sitting there, untouched.
Marie's heart began to race as she thought about packing the suitcase and leaving. She could go to her friend Emily's house, or maybe even to her aunt's house in the countryside.
But as she reached for the suitcase, Marie heard a knock at the door. It was her mother, come to check on her.
"Marie, are you okay?" her mother asked, concern etched on her face. "You look pale."
Marie hesitated, unsure of what to say. She didn't want to raise her mother's suspicions, but she couldn't pretend everything was fine either.
"I'm just...nervous," Marie said finally. "About the engagement."
Her mother nodded sympathetically. "I know it's a lot to take in, but trust me, Marie. This is for the best."
Marie nodded, feeling a surge of frustration. How could her mother not see that this was a mistake?
Marie's mother smiled and patted her hand. "I'll leave you to get ready for the announcement. It's going to be a big day, sweetie."
Marie nodded, feeling a sense of dread wash over her. She knew she had to act fast, before the announcement was made and her fate was sealed.
As soon as her mother left, Marie quickly packed the suitcase and grabbed her phone. She sent a text to Emily, asking her to meet up at the coffee shop down the street.
Marie's heart was racing as she made her way to the coffee shop. She knew she was taking a risk, but she had to try.
When she arrived, Emily was already there, sipping on a latte. "What's going on, Marie?" Emily asked, concern etched on her face. "Your text sounded urgent."
Marie took a deep breath and explained everything - the arranged marriage, her parents' debt, the announcement.
Emily's eyes widened in shock. "Marie, I had no idea. What can I do to help?"
Marie hesitated, unsure of what to ask. But then she remembered something. Emily's older brother, Alex Bryan, Alex was a lawyer.
