CHAPTER SEVEN
Emily and Ryan had grown closer over the past few months, but Emily couldn't help but notice that Ryan seemed to be hiding something. He would occasionally mention his past, but would quickly change the subject.
One evening, as they were walking across campus, Ryan suddenly stopped and looked at Emily with a serious expression. "I want to tell you something," he said, his voice low and hesitant.
Emily's curiosity was piqued. "What is it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ryan took a deep breath before speaking. "I grew up in a tough neighborhood. My parents were struggling with addiction, and I had to fend for myself from a young age."
Emily's eyes widened in shock. She had no idea that Ryan had been through so much.
Ryan continued, his voice cracking with emotion. "I had to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet. I felt like I was all alone in the world."
Emily's heart went out to Ryan. She couldn't imagine what he must have gone through.
But then Ryan's expression changed. A small smile played on his lips. "But despite all the struggles, I never gave up. I worked hard, and I earned a scholarship to college."
Emily felt a surge of admiration for Ryan. She had always known that he was strong and resilient, but she had no idea just how much he had overcome.
As they stood there, looking at each other, Emily felt a deep connection to Ryan. She realized that she had fallen for him, hard.
Ryan's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. Emily could see the vulnerability in his eyes, and she knew that he had revealed his past to her because he trusted her.
"Thank you for telling me," Emily said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ryan smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I wanted you to know," he said. "I wanted you to understand me."
Emily's heart swelled with emotion. She knew that she had to tell Ryan how she felt. But as she opened her mouth to speak, Ryan's phone rang, shattering the moment.
