Amira was tired, she had been out for a long time, she still could not tell a minute from an hour. She walked in the house and smelled the most delicious food she had ever smelled before. She walked in the kitchen and found an older woman cooking. She was terrified of approaching her. She had just broken into someone’s home.
“Well, don’t just stand there, come in child.” The old lady said.
“I am so sorry, I didn’t mean to…” Amira was cut off by the old lady signaling her to sit.
“Next time you leave, please leave a note. I can't properly look after you if I don’t know where you are.” The lady scolded.
“I think you have me confused with someone…”
“Nonsense Amira, I've been waiting for years for you to come home.” The lady cut her off again.
“Mom?” Amira asked softly.
“Amira, stop kidding around. I am old enough to be your grandmother.” She said in a fit of laughter.
“If you know who I am, why did no one claim me in the hospital?” Amira asked, anger building inside of her. “Who are you.?”
“First of all, child, you refer to me as Auntie Linda. Second, I couldn’t just leave the house unattended by your mother’s order,” Linda answered.
“My mother? Where is she? Is she coming home soon? Who is Genesis? What is this place?” Amira bombarded the old woman with questions.
“Why don’t we start with something simple?” Linda answered. “Your mother loves you very much, she can’t be here so she asked me to keep an eye on you.” Linda continued.
“I have a mother that loves me? Amira asked.
“Yes, dear very much. Go to the library and go to the history section. Do not ask me any questions until you have gone through the first shelf in there. I will call you when supper is ready.
Amira wanted to run away but Linda knew her and that meant no one could take her to any orphanage. Amira was willing to take her chances with the old lady, she seemed friendly and if she wanted to harm her, she could have called the police. Amira made her way to the library. There had to be at least a hundred books there. Amira felt like it was impossible for her to read them all fast enough to get her answers. A crazy old lady, Amira, thought to herself it would have taken her years to read all the books. Amira had been there for what seemed like years when she heard the intercom, it was Linda calling her for dinner.
Amira had actually done quite a bit of reading, she seemed to have absorbed every word in the books. Hmm, so that is why the nurses talked about loving reading, Amira thought to herself, when the smell of food invaded her senses.
