-Aiden’s POV- I watched her fall onto the bed and her eyes got far away and she stopped talking. I did not know what she was thinking about, but whatever it was made her cry. She held her throat for a moment then she jumped off the bed and looked around like she was looking for someone. We made eye contact and I could feel her fear. “What were you thinking about?” Mary looked into my eyes with so much trauma that I felt like crying for her. “My birthday.” I knew she was not telling me everything, but I was not going to push it. If she wanted to tell me, she would in her own time. “You are safe here; I promise you that whatever happened to you before will never happen again. You have my word as Alpha of this pack.” That was the only thig I could think of to show her that I was serious about her protection. I did not know why, but her safety was all I could think about. I knew that at a moment’s notice I would put my life on the line for hers. Out of nowhere, there was a loud bang in the hallway and Mary ran to me and hid in my chest. I held her close. I could feel her shaking in my arms. I opened a pack wide mindlike. What was that bang outside my room?! There was a long pause, then a voice answered. That was my fault Alpha. I was cleaning and dropped my bucket. Please forgive me. Don’t let it happen again. Before an answer could be given, I closed the mindlike. “It’s alright, Mary. It was just the maid. You are ok.” She, slowly stepped away from me and looked into my eyes. Those emeralds made me want to smile from ear to ear. “I’m sorry.” “You have nothing to apologize for.” I smiled at her and tuned to the chair by the fireplace. “Would you like me to start a fire?” “Sure, if that is what you want.” “Mary, I only wish for you to be comfortable here.” I turned back towards her and c****d my head to the side. “Do you understand that?” She nodded with a faint smile. “I just do not want to upset anyone.” She turned to the bed and took the night gown that was set on the end of it. “May I change?” “You do not have to ask permission. Do as you please. I shall get the fire going.” I watched her walk to the bathroom and closed the door before I began to work on the fire. Just as I got it going full force, she came out of the bathroom and bit her lower lip. The night gown was white and stopped just above her knees. It was short sleeved and had a floral print on it. I smiled at her and gestured to the bed. “Do I need to show my gratitude the way I was required too before?” Her question was loaded and heartbreaking. Her face was red and she could not look at me. I walked over to her and lifted her head to look into her eyes. “Mary, I will never require you to go anything to that effect. If you were referring to s*x,” at that word, she flinched in my hand. “I would never require that of you. That is no way to show gratitude. Never has been and never should have been for you. I’m sorry you had to go thru that.” She looked away even though I still had her face cupped in my hand. “I would like to lay down if that’s ok.” I dropped my hands to my sides and smiled at her. “I don’t want to upset you.” “I do not think that is possible.” She backed away from me and crawled into the bed without taking her eyes off me. She pulled the blanket to her neck. The comforter that I kept on my bed was soft and fluffy. I could see that she enjoyed the feel of it. I walked to the door and turned off the light, then I walked to the chair by the fire place and sat down. I watched her as she drifted to sleep.
