-Aiden’s POV-
I left my room and turned to Andrew. “Let’s give her some alone time. She’ll find us when she is ready.” We walked to the stairs and I couldn’t help but wonder what Mary had been thru. I opened a private mindlike with my Bata, Richard.
Richard, what have you found out about our prisoner?
I felt him link up. He refuses to talk. All he has said is that Alpha Mark will not be happy that we took his toy.
I chuckle out loud. Leave him for now and come to eat with the rest of us. I close the link and enter the dining hall.
“The Redwood pack have been tormenting other packs for a very long time,” Andrew began. “They single handedly eliminated the Silver River pack and the Red Lake pack.” There was a rather extensive list of crimes that were committed by the Redwood pack which is why we got involved in the first place. “As soon as we get a name, I can try and find information on the young lady you brought back.”
I looked over at Andrew as I took my seat at the head table of the dining hall. As the Alpha of the Blue River Pack of the south, it was on me to make sure that the other packs in the southern part of America. It was not an easy job, but my father prepared me for years before I took over the pack at the age of 18. I watched as my very large pack talked amongst themselves and ate their meal. We were a wealthy pack, so meals were plenty. As I looked down at my meal, the room grew silent. I looked up to see Mary standing in the doorway.
She looked so beautiful in the green sundress that I picked out for her. I wanted it to match her eyes. She looked confused and scared. She began to take steps back looking around the hall. I stood up to catch her attention. When we made eye contact, I could see her take a breath and began to walk to me. There was a seat next to me. I motioned for her to join me. That seat was normally reserved for the Luna of the pack, but seeing as I was still unmated and there was no Luna, she could sit there for the time being. When she got to me, she looked to her feet. “Am I allowed to sit here?”
Her questioned thru me off. Why would she no e allowed to sit? Then I remembered where she came from and I smiled at her. “Yes, you are free here.” I pulled the chair out for her and she sat down and remained quiet. Conversations started up again and I sat in my seat. A plate of food was placed in front of her. I could see her eyes widen at the sight.
“Is this all for me?” She did not look up from her plate.
“Yes, dear. That plate is for you. No one will take it away.” I smile at her even though she is not looking at me. She reached for the food with her hands and I quickly placed my hand over hers. She pulled back and flinched. “Sweetheart, you need to use the knife and fork.”
She looked at me with embarrassment. “I was not allowed those.” I smiled at her sweetly. “Why do you call me that?”
“Call you what?”
“Before you called me dear and just now you called my sweetheart. Why?” Her question was so innocent and pure. She must have never been treated with any form of decency.
“Forgive me if it offended you. I shall call you by your name from now on.” It was not my intention to offend her in any way. I wanted her to be happy and safe here. “Is Rose your last name?”
As she picked up the fork next to her plate, she looked at me. “Yes. It is the only thing I have left of my family.” She ate her food slowly. I could see her savoring ever bite. I could see Andrew on the other side of the table watching her with amazement. I opened a mindlink to him. Andrew.
He looked at me with a mouth full. Yes Alpha.
You now know her full name. I expect a full report by morning.
He nodded at me and went back to eating. When he finished his plate, he stood up, bowed to me and left the hall. I watched as everyone left the hall and there was only myself and Mary left at the table. “Where am I?” Her question was more confidant than she had been all thru dinner.
“You are at the packhouse of the Blue River Pack.”
She thought for a moment then smiled. “I remember my mother telling me stories of this pack. Stories about great wars and of justice.” Hey eyes lit up as she recalled her happy past. Those emerald eyes, I could not stop myself from looking into them. “When they were taken from me, the stories stopped. All I was told after that was how my parents were traitors and how I was lucky that the alpha took me in.”
“Can you tell me more about that?”
“I was told that my parents were only allowed to live on the pack grounds because they took care of their books. That it was a privilege to be there.”
“You were told that you are human?” That would explain a lot. If she never knew that she was a wolf, than her not finding her inner wolf is understandable. Paired with the silver collar and she did not have a chance.
“What else would I be?” I smiled at her wondering if I should tell her now, or wait until we were in my room again.
“AIDEN!” Richard yelled as he ran into the dining hall. “AIDEN! TRUSPASSERS!”
I stood up and ran for the door. Before leaving I looked back at Mary. “You may look about the packhouse, but please stay inside.” Then I left. I did not know who was in my land or why, but I knew that I wanted Mary safe no matter what. As I ran, I opened a mindlink to all my fighters. Intruders! To your stations! I closed the link and followed Richard.
