As a kid, Jane grew up believing that everyone was kind. She believed that we live in a world full of noble generous men and women, but back then, she was in the world quite alright, but this was a world pre-designed by her parents to keep her away from the harsh of the real world.
In line with the past families she lived with, life at the Casans became unbearable. The sweet parents who cared for her before Angelo (Mr and Mrs. Casan’s son) arrived had turned against her because of Angelo. To cut the story short, she had to leave. This time around, she was an adult, already 18 and had rights to whatever she wanted to do.
She was deranged by what her life had been up till now and would certainly not want anything to extend her lifestyle like that. She figured out that all those she met when she had parents were nice to her and her brother because they were being paid.
Money became her ultimate goal as a teenager. She had not gone to College, just graduated from High School and was now alone and lost as she fled from the Casan family house after much considerations. She moved into the city with no plans whatsoever but with the zeal to become extremely rich. How would this dream come true? How will she overcome all the odds and rise up again. This was always in her mind everyday as she moved through the streets of the city.
Of course, she needed a place to crash after the day and people to interact with. It did not take long before she made friends in the neighbourhood. She became friends with Stephanie. Stephanie was a young dark girl about the same age with Jane. She also did not have a fairy tale childhood as she lost her dad when she was six years old and her mum, it would be fair to conclude that she lost both of her parents at six years old. Stephanie had a small apartment where she stayed on her own. She was working at a pizza shop and was making enough to keep her sheltered and eat meals in a day.
When Jane moved in with her, she had nothing at all, she had no property nor did she have clothes to wear. She made use of Stephanie’s clothes as they had almost the same body size. One thing was certain to her and it was that she could not continue like that. She set out to look for a job. It was quite more difficult than she had imagined but she was finally accepted in a bar as a bartender. It was a bar not far from where she stayed so it was almost the perfect start to her plan.
She began work as a bartender with all seriousness and eagerness to leave that slum they lived in. At first, it was just attending to people, no extra involvements but things quickly changed order. She saw herself having to stay extra hours into the night because the people who came to the bar stayed extra hours, she also had to play along with the whole harassment she got from some rude men who would always want to take advantage of her. This worried her but she had no other choice than to comply and hope that in due time, tides will change. It did not take long before her prayer was answered but it had scary things before the settlement.
Jane usually eats dinner around 6pm because she had to be at work before 7pm. The bar where she worked in was popular so as expected, lots of people come in even before the late hours of the night. She was having dinner as usual at the normal time when her phone rang. It was Stephanie calling. Stephanie had gotten herself into trouble at work and needed some cash to bail herself out. She had to rush to Stephanie’s workplace to bring to her some cash they had at home.
Time was against her this time. After giving it to Stephanie, she was really rushing back to get to the bar which during the rush, she almost got hit by a car. It was Matt (Unknown to her at that time). The young man came down in shock and angered to really scold the young lady who almost ran into his car.
“why don’t you watch where you are …”, Matt paused as he saw the face of the girl he was about to shout at. Silently, he helped her stand up. “Excuse me, what’s so important that you almost got killed? Where are you heading to?” Jane did not utter a single word to the man and continued on her way. She had more important things to think of than sit and chit chat with Matt. Matt on the other side was dumb out of what just happened. He entered his car and drove away.
Meanwhile at work, her boss was already waiting for her. It was not a matter of anger at a spot. Her boss had to help the other three bartenders in order to ensure effective service to the customers. “Young lady, you’ve got yourself in deep, deep trouble”, her fellow worker told her as she reached the doors to the bar. She tried as much as possible to sneak into the counter area without being seen by her boss, she did not know that her boss was there at the counter.
“I can explain everything” she said with fright in her eye as she looked face to face with her boss she was hiding from. “It was….. it was”, she was still panting over the rush when someone from behind said “It was me, I did not see her coming by the sideway when I almost hit her with my car”. Jane stood with shock as she remembered what happened back then and the faces she met too.
